Knights of the Old Republic is ten years old

It’s time to feel a little old; not only is it the 30th anniversary of the Famicom, but it’s also the 10 year anniversary of what I think is the very finest Star Wars game ever made: Knights of the Old Republic. That’s right, it’s been 10 years since you played that game a long time ago, in a galaxy far away.

Over at Bioware’s blog, you can read some insights from a few of the people involved in making the game that paved the way for current space opera RPG darling, Mass Effect.

They’re also giving away a couple of nifty KoToR wallpapers for fans. Remember, if you’re feeling a tad nostlagic, you can pick the game up on your iPad, or for you PC on Steam. the game was followed by a decent, but flawed sequel (that’s been fixed up nicely with some patches) and later, a MMO that’s not quite done as well as either EA or Bioware had hoped.

If you did play KoToR, what’s your favourite memory? I think the first time I got a lightsaber – which took hours and hours of play – was a highlight, as was any and all interaction with HK-47.

I really wonder if we’ll ever get a Star Wars game of this calibre again; especially now that EA holds the keys to the licence. Of course, they are lords and masters of Bioware now, so it’s something that could indeed happen.

KotOR is one of those game you MUST play.

You are less of a person in my eyes if you have not played KotOR 😛

So, go out there and become a full person dammit!

And the MF did that more than any other. Not to mention it is the only YT freighter ever capable of 0.5 class lightspeed due to a special modification to its hyperdrive that others have never been able to reproduce. It also has had a longer life than the EH. No no no! MF for teh win!

While I loved Ep4-6 and loved Ep1-3, and that era, the Old Republic really, really resonated with me. Its like I was there, being the Exile (the male version thank you very much), or being….who you are in K1. I really lived myself into those games.

I did K1 about 9 times, and K2 about 20 odd times. And those days I was not as fortunate as I am now having so many games.

Its a part of my life, and helped me through some rough times those days.

            July 16, 2013 at 09:48

            ME3 ending was overblown, really.

DA2 was bad, but no worse than RPG;s I grew up playing. It was a playable RPG. It was a terrible RPG because the makers can and have and did so much better.

Playing Old Republic now, having endured the 27 gig download or something, not overwhelmed, but not underwhelmed either.

          • Ultimo_Cleric N7

            July 16, 2013 at 09:52

Old Republic isnt terrible, I thought the storylines were actually pretty good. The gameplay just didnt feel right to me.
As for ME3, I do think that some people went overboard, but in general the reaction was justified given all the promises and hype from EA.
And yes DA2 was bad. It wasnt TERRIBLE, but I do feel the game was rushed. I mean the SAME CAVE over and over and over and over and over. That is just plain lazy.

            July 16, 2013 at 09:53

Sprint, faster movement speed, is available for free at level for all but free players, so other players zip right by me. But at level 15 I get it for free!

I am playing on SP. I do not like the idea of interaction.

        But the download is heavy!

If you known someone who has downloaded it, they say (on the SWTOR website) you can copy from that person to the folder the launcher expects and no download or patch only.

I am in Pretoria east for example.

Weekend, next day, next day and next day!

I have 2mb line, but it seems to like 100Kb/s

At work, I did get 900kb/s, when I got tired of waiting. But then it also did drop to 100 to 150kb/s. Some people did complain the download was slow, others not. I think time of day, where you are, that sort of thing does influence.

SC2 allows to start playing while it is downloading. This could do as well, you start on a planet and they do not let you leave it for a while, so just choose your class on download an hey presto, faster playing.

Bioware needs to get back into it’s deep RPG roots. hate me for saying this, but ever since they are part of EA, their RPGS feel Shallow and more action orientated …. yes …. Mass Effect 2 and 3 and Dragon Age 2, seriously Dragon Age 1 was one of my favorite Rpgs of this Gen, and I mainly play JRPGs …. also .KotR ..SO MUCH LOVE

Pfff. Bioware had it right before EA stepped in. Deep story and involved gameplay.

          Random fact:

In Dragon Age 2, Varric has a side-conversation with Fenris, mentioning that his crossbow is named Bianca, as Mirabelle was taken. Paying homage to Bioware’s earlier game, Jade Empire, where Sir Roderick wields the muskette, Mirabelle.
