Bioware games have had all kinds of weird and wonderful romance options – the sex scenes certainly looked odd, but it was all about getting that paramour achievement. In the new Dragon Age, they took a more organic approach to romance that sounds really impressive.
In an interview with IGN, Creative Director Mike Laidlaw explained that it’s about more than just the sex:
The most romantic moment in a video game that I’ve ever seen is when Jackie visits his girlfriend’s apartment in The Darkness…. She baked me a cake, she’s moving in, and you watch possibly the entirety of To Kill a Mockingbird as she passes out on your lap because she’s tired and snuggly. That is amazing.
Laidlaw goes on to say that it’s the closest video games get to the first 10 minutes of Up and that it makes players really care about the character. He also sites The Last of Us as an example of gaming that makes you care about characters; the goal in Dragon Age: Inquisition wasn’t just to give enough presents until someone wanted to have sex with the player, it’s more about letting genuine affections grow and develop. While some characters might be romantically off-limits or just friends and others might not share your sexual orientation, the idea is for specific moments to act as beats in the game, times when characters might wake up to desires or realize that there are incompatibilities.
It sounds like the game is coming along nicely and I loved my hands on time with it. The romance system has always been flawed in games, but this one is shaping up to be quite something. I’m really excited for it – it feels like the attention to detail is impressive in this latest RPG from Bioware.

It’s about sex with too much clothes on.

It’s not really sex, is it? More like awkward heavy petting and clothes on grinding. Which is actually a lot more disturbing than anything CD Projekt could conjure up in the Witcher.

You don’t just give people presents until they have sex with you? What madness is this? It’s like everything I learnt about social interaction from games has been wrong all this time.

Watch a random American sue the game for not promoting safe sex when he picks up an STD

I am sorry but for some people giving enough presents to get laid is a REAL romantic option. Still seeking a sugar momma of my own. 😛
