Is the Destiny Limited Edition worth your money?

Destiny Limited contents

Despite receiving games that are bigger and better, we still feel cheated by the high prices of games combined with the ever expanding use of DLC or paid expansions. Collector’s and Limited Editions seek to help on this front, and I think they might just be worth your money.

Back when Dragon Age: Origins came out, I was still completely against DLC – just give me the full game and don’t ask for money again. Down the line, some cool DLC came out that actually expanded on the game in a fun and worthwhile way. The same is true of some other excellent franchises, but I still have my same gripe – I don’t want to be hit up for cash down the line. This is why I have sort of come on board for the Season Pass approach, as well as special editions.

Yes, the Destiny Limited Edition is more expensive than the base game. However, once you pay your money, you’ve got the full experience. Instead of being stuck on the moon while the rest of your friends get to explore new planets and grab all kinds of new gear, the Limited Edition also gives access to all the upcoming expansions. This is exactly what I’ve wanted for every game franchise – let me just “buy the game” and get all the things.

The Limited Edition also includes all the sexy stuff that I love for my gaming fetish – a beautiful folio, and postcards from the Golden Age plus an antique star chart? Sign me up – I love all these collectibles. What a way to make me feel like a real guardian, unearthing artifacts.

The reality is that we know Activision has poured a ton of money into this franchise. The base game is going to be really solid – the beta was a ton of fun so presumably the full game will expand upon that. However, we also know that the game will get some important expansions to help people excited and playing the game for many years to come. Look at how Titanfall seemed to wither and die; no one talks about playing it anymore. Bungie and Activision are doing their best to ensure the same fate doesn’t befall Destiny; they have planned out the expansions so that the game stays fresh.

However, I know some people will whine about DLC when the expansions are released, wondering why they should pay for content that should have just been included in the original game. I think I have finally moved on from this mindset. As long as the original game is a complete experience, I’m happy for there to be added expansions as long as there’s an option for me to just pay for everything at the start. I don’t want to be hit up for money once I’m already enjoying a game, but I’m fine with dishing out some more cash in the beginning to be guaranteed that I get it all.

Have I just been brainwashed to accept the new status quo, or do you guys agree? Are we getting more value for our money with these expansions and Limited Editions?

All collectors and limited editions should come with a season pass

That would be pretty cool & possibly persuade me to start preordering again.

Preorder incentive as season pass is also a good idea. I hate the pre-order mission or outfit offers

I don’t hate DLC, I just judge them based on what they deliver. Sometimes it’s good & worth the money like the Borderlands 2 season pass, other times not – and it’s very often the latter. Sleeping Dogs is my go-to example for that, I bought the game & all DLC – I loved the base game but I shouldn’t have wasted my money on the DLC – the extra items were superfluous & the story DLC was utterly boring go to waypoint & beat up something quests. And despite that, none of it felt like it was content cut from the game to sell at a later point or dangle like a carrot for preorders like the Shale DLC in DA:O.

I think there’s a trend of trying to use DLC & season passes as a means of inflating games prices without actually increasing the initial asking price of the game because then people would complain about rising prices, whereas they’re happy to pay $60 now then a few $s here & there. When everything has a price of $60 & a $30 season pass, the game costs $90, not $60.

      TL:DR 😛

Agree, BL2 had some awesome DLC, Bioshock as well, but they are the exceptions.

The only exceptions in my book. Fighting games purposefully excludes characters, FPS games like COD and BF does this with map packs, even giving you levels from previous games and asking you to pay for them again. ME3 left out a whole mission and character that was crucial to the whole story. Most do it as a cash grab and the majority gobbles it up like ANCs campaign promises

Exactly, if I feel a game might be like that (fighting games mostly) I think twice before buying the base game.

DLC is mainstream, you either buy it or not. Same with season passes. We can’t buy a full game anymore at premium price. We have to spend double that. Congrats to all the “gamers” that supported this business model. You won. It’s never going to go away. Now do me a favor. When games as a service starts, always on DRM is implemented and 24 hour check-ins comes back please hand over your complaints to the nearest brick wall asap so that this mutation that my hobby has become can die. Because currently you are just taking with a smile on your face and cash in your hand asking for more.

Yes Destiny is an online MMO Shooter. You have to be online and they are only doing what every other MMO does so in this instance I can look past it. But not without my eyeball twitching.

i generally don’t bother with Season Passes. I’ll often enjoy the game on it’s own and not really want more content when i’m done, Sometimes for SP stuff, I’ll get the DLC much later (when there’s a sale).

remember when they were called expansions, and added tons of content instead of something silly?

(Saying that, I must confess I bought the Elite Soldier pack for X-com: Enemy Unknown, because I wanted to Colour code my Soldiers. And once, they resembled Power rangers)

I like LE / CE if they include Season Passes (if that game needs one). And if the price of DLC is right, then it’s cool with me (as long as it adds to the story / game). But paying R100 for a new armour colour and the ‘S&M outfit add-on pack” is just not on! I think Batman: Arkham Origins (apart from the Mr. Freeze add-on, of course) is a prime example of how not to do DLC.

I prefer to buy the collectors, limited or gold additions, season pass included, much better value and you get all the bells and whistles.

Retail games with DLC and Season Passes inside the box, just blurs the lines between retail and digital.

Destiny – DLC and season pass in the box, always online play, not an MMO but marketed as an MMO, blurred lines.

On the CD Projekt The Witcher 3 forum, there are people who create threads asking if there will be a code in the retail box to activate on Steam. Blurred lines. I mean just buy the digital Steam version if you have to have The Witcher 3 showing in a fucking digital library. Are we at a point where people can’t even understand what, No DRM, means.

Retail means that anyone can purchase a product and use it. If video games come with digital codes as a special edition, don’t support that bullshit. Don’t blur the lines.

Console retail games has seen and will see even more of this digital codes and always online gameplay. This is to prepare you for the next generation of consoles with DRM.

I agree with you on the no DRM thing, but I think that your arguments would be more well received if you stopped trying to shove the witcher 3 down our throats on every post you make.

Will it be a good game? Most likely yes, but please stop trying to force it on everyone.
You have a good weekend now.

You will not buy games with DRM. You will buy The Witcher 3.

When I talk about DRM, I have to mention CD Projekt RED and The Witcher 3 because that is truly what no DRM is. There is not a lot of new AAA games with no DRM to talk about.

CD Projekt RED is doing something that has not been seen for some time. A retail PC with zero DRM. I that will be pushed in my comments for a long time. Plus there are other comments by other people, so it’s not just my stupid DRM comments on here.

My limited edition is already pre ordered!! I will be there!!! Great going from them to ask for it up front, I also then feel like I am buying a full game with some added stuff!! I am not angry at this approach at all… But then again I would buy a tea cup if it had Destiny on it!! I am in love 🙂

Incorrect statement for 1 ….. every1 gets the same at launch apart from the extra items n stuff u get depending on what edition you buy.

no1 is gonna be stuck on the moon at all. you dont get any extra areas to ‘goto’ just because you buy the limited edition. yes you get the first DLC in december but that doesnt stop friends just buying the dlc in december.

that statement you made should be adjusted or removed.

Funny thing the special edition only gets you the first 2 expansion but from what Bungie was saying as they want to keep expanding the game so as long as it has a high enough player base it will get more expansion until they make a sequel so expect more then 2 expansions

I think you’ve been brainwashed a little. It’s a forgivable sin if not an inevitable one. The industry has been forcing this for so long, release less complete games while simultaneously decreasing the amount of playtime for years. In combination, games would appear full experiences rather than what they actually are: a series of one level training in and a run of “go here, do that.” I’m a very jaded gamer so my opinion is biased, especially having three decades of solid gaming under my belt. Regardless of how anyone feels, the industry will cater to the culture for as long as it is a profitable thing to do, and there will be a time when your generation of gamers observes your protégés with the same enigmatic blank stare as mine did when this dlc craze hit the wallets.

If you have fun and feel the additional content and packaging is worth the money, buy it. This is a highly subjective hobby with participation contingent upon personal satisfaction.
