Is someone buying out Epic Games?

What is happening over at one of my favourite studio’s of all time, Epic Games? The guys behind the massively successful Gears of War series and a ton of other top content are haemorrhaging senior managers faster than Eskom’s prices increase.

First, we had Rodd Ferguson jumping ship closely followed by Cliff Bleszinski, Lee Perry and a pile of newly acquired developers at People Can Fly (Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski and Michal Kosieradzki). And now probably most surprising of all is the news that Mike Capps is resigning after 10 years service. Yes, that’s Mike Capps, the  the President of Epic Games.

Mike isn’t leaving for greener pastures though;  in fact his official statement is that he’s retired

It’s hard to believe I’m writing these words, but here goes! After 10 crazy and wonderful years, I’m handing off my current presidential duties at Epic, and transitioning into an advisory role as well as remaining on the Epic board of directors.

If you haven’t heard, I have a baby boy on the way. I’m fortunate that with Epic’s success and generosity, I can be a stay at home dad for a while. My wife Julianne and I are very happy in Raleigh, and other than cleaning up baby barf, I don’t have much planned. I might do some teaching, spend more time on creative writing, and maybe get more active with a few charities.

The only reason that someone running one of the most successful studio’s in the world would retire is if they are about to collapse or someone has bought them out.

Epic is doing incredibly well at the moment so I don’t see it going belly up – but with a new round of consoles about to be released the need for fantastic first-party content is extremely urgent at the moment and the idea that Microsoft would snap up the entire company to secure 2 or 3 solid launch titles is hard to pass off as illogical.

Hey…if someone offered me a couple of million to only write about Xbox 360 I’d take the money and retire as well… any offers?
