inFamous: Second Son frame-capping patch inbound

SecondSoncap

I rather enjoyed inFamous: Second Son, though not quite as much as our Darryn did. As a city, Seattle seemed a little underpopulated and there’s not much to do in the periphery. My biggest issue though, is of a technical nature; the game runs at an uncapped framerate, and varies wildly between 30 and 60 frames per second, making input a little less smooth and precise than it should be. That’s getting fixed.

Sucker Punch Productions has detailed an upcoming patch for the game that caps the frame-rate at 30fps, making for a smoother experience…especially where remote-play is concerned.

Here’s what you have to look forward to:

  • Change time-of-day: Once you beat the game, a new entry will appear on the options menu to allow you to select the time of day.
  • HUD on/off: An option to let players turn the HUD on and off – especially useful for screenshot purposes
  • Cap at 30fps: Internally, Sucker Punch “prefer the unlocked frame rate,” but recognizes  a group of players find the unlocked frame rate “very distressing.” The team will provide a way to ensure the game is not bumping up over 30fps is that’s how one prefers to play.

The developers have even hinted that a little something extra might be coming with the next patch, expected in about two weeks.

Second Son really is the first game I’ve played on the new consoles that really screams “next gen” when it comes to visuals, though it’s decidedly last-gen when it comes to game design. Still, this patch should be out in time for me to enjoy my second playthrough, which I’ll be doing as an evil bastard. I may even enjoy i more this time around; being the good guy is a bit of a chore.

Those of you are playing it..have you tried the inFamous paper trail Augmented Reality game yet?  It has you fishing for clues on real-life websites to unlock more missions in the game. It’s clever and intriguing stuff and most certainly worth a go.

One thing I do miss from inFamous 2 though is the user-generated content. Users could create their own missions within the game, which could then be shared with other gamers from around the world to play – and Second son’s taken a bit of a step backwards in that regard.

That was how long it took for the loading screens between each generic cave in Dragon Age 2, what an anti climax.

“A little less smooth and precise than it should be” anyone who plays online would not even notice this. Like me. Or my brain is trained to not even notice this and to compensate for it automatically.

I don’t understand it either. Maybe it’s because my eyes are buggered & I wear glasses instead of having 30/30 eagle vision. Do these people have to sit there with a bucket in case they vomit when the frame rate drops by a frame or 2?

I blame the master races obsession with frame rates and resolutions. This “group” obviously moved from PC to console.

I don’t think it’s the master race at all. Remember these are console gamers complaining. Having a game dip by a few frames is nothing (Even as much as 15 frames from 60)

But when your frame rates jump between 30 and 60 drastically it can be quite a strain on the eyes and actually becomes annoying. The differance is noticeable when it’s jumping between the 2 frame ends.

If it all stays at 30FPS then one doesn’t realise as easy that it’s only 30FPS. But when you see it happening before your very eyes it’s a differant story all together

I know I saw the underline and just couldn’t care anymore as I never ever, ever, ever spell difference right. So I’ve given up correcting it when typing

You can right click the underlined word and (in Firefox) the correct spelling should pop up in the popup menu. Not sure if I installed a add on for it and yet I still make mistakes. Doesn’t have a cure for grammar nazis though

Yeah I know. I got tired of right clicking the word each and every time lol.

When jumping between 60FPS and 30FPS erratically it is quite an irritating thing. By a few small frames is nothing.

I think it’s the vast majority complaining when it drops from 60 to 30 over and over.

Trust me, it’s not enjoyable for many and it is noticeable. Especially on displays that are designed to run at 60Hz.

Pretty much what you said. Plus, with a TV polling at 60hz/60 times a second, (as modern tv’s do) your controller inputs at 30fps would result in smooth controller input (30 goes in to 60 quite nicely). Controller response with an uneven frame rate means your input isn’t precise.

SS runs for the most part at 35fps, though it does jump quite erratically, specially in indoor area, or bits without much in the periphery.

It’s especially worse when you try remote play on the vita, which is capped at 30fps by its technology. , it adds too much judder for it to be…remotely playable.

But yeah I understand exactly where you are coming from. I may not be a console player but I know the exact frustration you are talking about from a PC perspective as well.

Lol nothing about elitist man 🙂 Just hate drastic frame skips. If my game jumps from 60 to 30 or less drastically then I either drop my graphics to smooth out the framerate or use adaptive vsync to lock it at 30FPS so that it’s not as noticeable.

Nothing elite about wanting smooth gameplay 🙂 however as part of the master race it is nice that we can selectively apply these to our games as we feel and don’t need to wait for a patch to do so 😉

Why not give you the option to lower the graphics and hit a constant 60 fps instead? 😐 30fps, ouch.

Thoroughly enjoying this game! So much so, I started my second playthrough immediately after completing it the first time. Such an awesome game!

Between playing this on the PS4, The Walking Dead: Season 2 and Mark of the Ninja on 360, Gran Turismo 6 and Dragon Age: Origins (felt like playing it again) on PS3 and now Mafia and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver on PC (revisiting some of my favourite classics!), my backlog is alive and well at the moment.

Got to say just really got into pc gaming in the last couple of years always been a console gamer. But it seems like the more i know about fps drops pop in, and other problems in games the more i notice now and it kinda sucks. It was more fun when i wasn’t so critical on framerate, resolution, or trying to max out a games on pc. Hell i built a pc to be able to run a couple of pc games better. Went from a e8500 dual core at 4.0 with 4 gigs of ram and a 560ti, to a 3770K at 4.7, 16 gigs of ram, and 2 780 classifieds with 2 ssd’s in raid. So it was a pretty big jump in performance. But I think we need try to quit being so critical and have fun playing games. But I do think the ps4 and one are underpowered and the cpu is the bottleneck. Hell soon enough there will be tablets that have a better cpu’s.
