Indie Zoe: Raider of the Lost News

Okay guys, here is a round up of your Indie Gaming news for the week.  A lot of these stories fall through the cracks, so here I am, picking them up and bringing them to you!

First off, let’s give some praise to GOG.com. They have officially launched their indie gaming platform to compete with Steam Greenlight.  Yup, they’ll help indies publish on GOG.com, as well as provide support and even financial backing.  Sounds pretty good to me.  You can check out more info over here.
Speaking of competing with Steam Greenlight, Joel Nyström of Ludosity has come out to say that the Wii U eShop is better than publishing on Steam.  He criticizes Steam Greenlight for the changing policies and lack of transparency:

“It’s actually easier to publish on Wii U than on Steam… The thing about Greenlight it that you just don’t know, there aren’t any clear answers and they seem to be changing their policy, and their CEO is saying one thing and they are acting in another way. I think a lot of developers are anxious about Greenlight, right now.”

I suppose the biggest indie gaming news came from Microsoft and Sony; both spend a considerable portion of their press conferences talking about indie gaming and how they will support it.  Microsoft unveiled their ID@Xbox program through which indies can self-publish and get access to tools, while Sony spent much of their conference showcasing indie games and harping on about their love of indies. Does this mean that it will be easier to publish on these consoles? Can we expect what Mark Cerny called a “renaissance in gaming”? It remains to be seen, but it certainly is an awesome step in the right direction.

Part of Sony’s big announcement was that Minecraft would be coming to PlayStation – PS3, PS4 and PSVita.  In fact, this is being developed by 4J Studios, the studio that ported Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and Overlord: Raising hell to PS3, as well as Perfect Dark and Minecraft to XBLA.  They proudly tweeted:

Finally, speaking of Minecraft, Notch came out with a blog explaining what happened with 0x10c, which he canceled, as well as where he wants to go from here.  However, I think he said it best via twitter:

He’s funny – he explains that he used to be able to just dream, develop, fail, restart, and carry on with the cycle in relative obscurity. Now, his every tweet is news, and there is a lot more pressure on him to be revolutionary and interesting.  All game developers should be allowed to try new things, and to fail – it’s part of staying innovative.  So I say, keep going Notch, make the games you want to make.

Alright, I think that’s about all the major indie gaming news for the week.  What do you think guys, should I make this a weekly thing?  We can even add gameplay of me sucking at random indie games.  Tell me what you think!

Yeah but in steams defense. Before the policy changes we had what like 5 major scams, fake games, unlicensed remakes and games about penises (we prefer boobie games). So yeah go go greenlight!

Weekly would be nice, some good indie games inbetween all the other…

And what with today, reminder of how one step too ar can destroy a series…

1st Diablo which 3 destroyed and now Indiana jones which the 4th installment destroyed..
(So far as i am considered, there are only 3 Indiana movies)

I know SS likes aliens from the days of ET but why put it into Indiana Jones.

It’s good to see other guys jumping on the ‘publish yourself’ bandwagon. I just hope this means we’ll get more gems like Don’t Starve and Dungeon Defenders, not a vast array of crap to sift through.

I’d like this to be a weekly thing, or maybe fortnightly if there’s not really enough for weekly. There’s a lot of indies floating around & it’s easy for good ones to slip though the cracks.
