Indie Zoe: Raider of the Lost News (17 April 2014)
So, tomorrow is Friday. Not just any Friday, it’s Good Friday. So does this make it average Thursday? No! It makes it Fantastic Early Weekend Thursday. So, what indie gaming news do you need to know about before the weekend?
Ludum Dare is almost upon us. It’s essentially a game jam, and will be taking place from 25-28 April. That’s next weekend. You can still vote on the theme if you want to get involved. Make Games SA has secured the use of the Microsoft facilities in Bryanston, which is really nice of them – Microsoft’s coffee machines fueled the last game jam there and it’s nice to see that they’re still willing to give the space and air out the room afterwards. In Cape Town, Free Lives are opening up their offices to host Ludum Dare. I suppose it makes sense for them – Broforce started as a Ludum Dare game, and look how far it’s come.
Speaking of Broforce, the game is selling really well. I even heard through the indie grapevine that they’ve made so much money in just a short time on Early Access that they’ve had to pay for Unity – it surpassed the “I’m just making games for fun and small profit” level. Well done to the guys at Free Lives!
A reminder for two games that you really should be voting for on Greenlight and supporting on Kickstarter. Tom Sparks and the Quakes of Ruin is from local developers and really looks like fun. It’s a top-down action-adventure shooter that feels to me like the awesome love child of Bastion and Torchlight. Give it some Greenlight and Kickstarter love. Prisonscape is extremely gritty, despite using Chrono Trigger-esque sprites. It lets you shiv people. Need I say more? Go check it out on Greenlight and Kickstarter and show your support.
Prototype of the Week
The awesome people of Celestial Games have updated their game jam concept of Trivarient that I enjoyed. The cool puzzler has been reimagined and renamed. It’s now The College of Pointy Hats, and you can give it a play on Windows and Mac. It’s a color-based puzzler – you can get a better sense of the original idea behind the game from this gameplay video of Trivariant:
