Icewind Dale’s getting enhanced

Icewind

I have had it up to my eyeballs with the deluge of remastered and remade games this generation. Mostly, it has to be said, because they’re largely all games that were only released in the last generation, and for most of us are still rather fresh in our memories. Yes, I understand that I’m not the target market for these remakes, but they still seem a little overbearing in their profusion. If remakes and remasters have to happen, I’d prefer they were of games from an age past.

And will you look at that? One of the myriad of Dungeons and Dragons-based RPG from Black Isle Studios, Icewind Dale, is one of my very favourite RPG’s of forever. And it’s getting a remaster, similar to the one that saw Baldur’s Gate get gussied up for a new audience.

Yes, Icewind Dale is getting an enhanced edition, that will soon grace PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Android tablets and phones.

Here’s what’s new:

  • Swords and Sorcery: Discover dozens of new spells and items, including new magic armor and weapons.
  • Blackguards and Wizard Slayers: Select from over 30 new kits and classes to create the perfect adventuring party.
  • Bring A Friend: Join your fellow adventurers in cooperative, cross-platform multiplayer games.
  • See The Unseen: Explore quest content cut from the original game, now finished and restored.
  • More to Experience: Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition includes both the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster expansion packs.

Yup, it includes all of the expansions, as well as a ton of cut content. It’ll also allow you to play the game co-operatively, cross platform. The game will also feature no DRM (when purchased from developer Beamdog directly), which should make some people quite happy. Find out everything you need to know at the official site.

No release date as yet, but the game is in beta, with a release expected soon.

Revered Brother Poquelin was such a cool villain and so well voiced!

Unfortunately I got stuck fighting the head ice priestesses and no matter what I did my party kept getting wiped (I even cheated to get 5 extra levels and I barely lasted 2 seconds longer) so I never finished the game.

At least she was able to enjoy it, which is more than some people can say.

Icewind Dale had some of the most memorable music in an RPG game. Kuldahar and the temple in town still gives me goosebumps when listening to the music.

As much as I love these games, I’ll never get the remakes. Still have my original discs to go along with my GOG copies, there’s mods for most of the stuff even if I was inclined to play them again.

I am with you there. Graphics was not too shoddy, still playable. Icewind dale was good, but I enjoyed the solid story of Baldurs Gate more.

Baldurs Gate 1 perhaps a bit “old”, but still fun. Replayed both 1 +2 and expansions about 2 to 3 years ago. well worth it, in fact was tempted to replay this December, on Holiday (wife sleeps much more than I do)

I love these types of games. These are good times because they’ve made a bit of a comeback – Divinity Original Sin, Shadowrun Returns, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, Torment Tides of Numenera – I’m probably forgetting a few.

Divinity Original Sin: Should I get this?

Divine Commander or whatever was not fun, fairly pretty, but not fun.

Divine Divninty Dragon Knight Saga was great, bit slow in places, some balance issues, but a great game overall. Nothing like jumping off a very high cliff and then changing to dragon form!

I haven’t played it yet so can’t give my own recommendation, but everything I’ve read about it so far has been very positive.

Yeah, me too, but been burned too. bound by Flame, looked good, till I got it. I cannot play past the flaws.

also some reviews said you need a good time investment to learn it properly. Great. If fun, not problem, if requires learning to be fun, then we might have a problem.

Beyond a short tutorial I’ve got no interest in learning how to play a game. That’s not fun, that’s work. Picking up on how to play the game better while I play is perfectly fine with me.

Yip, when I was a teenyager, no problem. But now? Stuff that. I have so much crap to learn at work, new skills and stuff.

I play Chess as well, so video gaming must be easy to be fun. Brainpower is allocated elsewhere, as is patience

I’m indecisive about the new LG layout.

I like the fact that it’s new, but not sure that it was necessary.
It squashes the text into the middle, sorta

Yes, it’s one of a number of issues we’re still working on. Our hand was kinda forced in to going live with the new layout before it was fully baked.

I am with you, on a Full HD screen, I expect more. Problem is (that I have with our developments) is a lot of screens are not full HD and have crappy res, so less fits in legibly.

I am not and will NEVER be a web developr (not in the mood to learn new tech, rather direct projec

Sigh they just my luck – I finished the first IWD earlier this year 😛 I’m on a quest to finish all of the infinity engine games. I only have BG2 and IWD2 left to go!

This is awesome, we LAN’ed this heck out of this game and IWD2 way back when. This is what DA: Inqusition’s MP should be modeled on.

    Wait a minute.

did anyone here actually play Baldurs Gate Enhanced edition? People must have bought it, for another to come out in the same vein

I looked at it, but figured, nah, why bother

I played both BG1 and 2 Enhanced Editions and quite enjoyed them. Extra quests and companions was a nice addition to these golden oldies.
