How to get Netflix (and more!) working on the PlayStation TV

PSTV

When I reviewed the PlayStation TV a few months ago, I was a little less than kind about Sony’s micro console. The list of supported games and apps was pitiful – even more so than the libraries for the actual handheld version of the thing. Even apps like Netflix, and some of the better games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Gravity Rush were blocked from running, despite the PlayStation TV packing the same core internals as the Vita itself.

That complaint can finally be laid to rest – at least for now. There’s no hardware reason for apps of this ilk to be blacklisted; instead it’s all controlled by a set of software-based whitelist. . Some enterprising folk have discovered an exploit in the device’s email app that allows you to alter the system’s whitelist; the set of games and apps that the system can run. Importantly, that includes the Netflix app.

All it entails is mailing a new whitelist to your Vita TV, and opening the mail on the Vita TV. Here’s the complete guide, courtesy of Hackinformer.com.

  1. Download list_launch_vita.dat if you haven’t already. and rename it to #0
  2. Now you are going to write a new e-mail with our #0-file as attachment and the path we want the file to be installed (ur0:game/launch/list_launch_vita.dat) as subject. Send it to your PlayStation TV
  3. If everything did go right you should see a camera symbol. Touch it and DO NOT click OK on the appearing Error Message but simply close the e-mail app completely!
  4. Just to be sure restart your PlayStationTV and you should already be able to launch most of the blacklisted Vita-Games on your PSTV!

There is a major caveat in that connecting to PSN or rebooting the Vita TV rewrites the whitelist – but seeing as it takes all of two minutes to send it anew, it’s hardly an issue.

If you want to increase the number of games playable, there’s another method available that’s slightly more involved, but possibly worth doing anyway.

Here’s a list of previously blacklisted games that have been confirmed to work with the exploit (via Vitareviews):

  • Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified
  • Crimsonland
  • Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z
  • Flying Hamster HD
  • Get Off My Lawn
  • Gravity Rush
  • Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia: Producing Perfection
  • Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition
  • Invizimals: The Alliance
  • LEGO Marvel Super Heroes: Universe in Peril
  • LittleBigPlanet PS Vita
  • Metal Gear Solid: HD Collection
  • Mortal Kombat
  • Netflix
  • PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
  • PlayStation Vita Pets
  • Ratchet and Clank Trilogy
  • Rayman Legends
  • Resistance: Burning Skies
  • Run Like Hell
  • Silent Hill: Book of Memories
  • Sly Cooper Collection
  • Starlight Inception
  • Street Fighter x Tekken
  • Sunflowers
  • Tearaway
  • Uncharted: Golden Abyss
  • Ys: Memories of Celceta

You’ll have to pair up with a DualShock 4 and use that controller’s touch pad to simulate any sort of touch screen activity, and any games that rely heavily on the Vita’s microphone and camera will continue to be unplayable – but it’s rather nice that people have managed to unlock this latent ability in some severely underutilised hardware.
