How does the PlayStation 4 compare to a PC, really?

Elemental

Sony’s imminent PlayStation 4 is essentially a PC, and not an especially high-specced one at that. While many developers, including Epic Games, have been extolling the console’s virtues as the future of video gaming, just how does Sony’s new box compare?

Epic recently unveiled their Unreal engine 4 elemental demo running on actual PS4 hardware, and the folks at Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry have put up a comparison video.

Here it is.

Epic says the demo has been retooled, but it’s quite plain to see that the PS4 demo just doesn’t quite compare. Textures seem a little flatter, and there are noticeable fewer particle effects. worse is that the real-time global Illumination seems to be missing, replaced with baked in Lightmass lighting.

"The biggest casualty is the omission of real-time global illumination, which produced some really impressive lighting in the original presentation," says Digital Foundry in their report. "GPU particles are fewer in number, depth of field has been significantly retooled and isn’t quite as impactful on PS4, while object-based motion blur appears to have been removed. The flowing lava effect had real depth and texture to it in the original PC version – on PS4, it’s significantly flatter."

Epic’s senior graphics engineer Brian Karis says the two are closer than it might seem at first glance.

"Feature wise most everything is the same, AA resolution, meshes, textures (PS4 has tons of memory), DOF (I assure you both use the same Bokeh DOF, not sure why that one shot has different focal range), motion blur.

"Biggest differences are SVOGI has been replaced with a more efficient GI solution, a slight scale down in the number of particles for some FX, and tessellation is broken on ps4 in the current build which the lava used for displacement. We will fix the tessellation in the future.

It’s worth noting that while the PC version was running on pretty high end PC hardware; top of the line i7 CPU and Nvidia’s GTX 680, which makes the PS4’s attempt at parity pretty impressive, considering you’re pitting a $1200 PC against a $400 console.

It’s probably also prudent to note that the PS4 is running some new API’s, while developers are already quite well versed with the DirectX 11 tech running on the PC – so it’s safe to say that over time, the PS4 will still compete.

I used to fix ps3 for $, and they kept kraping out with every update, along with mine, I got really sick of it, that I never bothered to even checkout the ps4 buzz, other than the reveal. I did some research and decided few weeks ago to treat myself(and my biz) with a powerful pc, and I got a sick deal with dell for alienware aurora r4 w/ gtx 680, i73820 etc. I was curious to see some vs against this card, and got here. Its really no comparison, ill never get a console again

It’s not really fair to compare apples and oranges.

The PS4 will outperform a PC of similiar/same specs but will never catch up to high end PC machines.

    That being said…..

I hope that moron Mark Rein (http://www.lazygamer.co/general-news/the-ps4-is-the-worlds-best-pc/) checks this video and realises that him stating the PS4 is better than PC’s because of memory and that a PS4 is “the world’s best PC” eats his words as the worlds not even best PC just beat the PS4 particle for particle.

I think it would outperform a similar spec PC. For the simple reason that the PS4 is pretty much PC architecture and runs on much less overheads than a PC. The main issue is Windows in this case. So overheads included the PS4 vs a PC of the same spec… I honestly think the PS4 would win. And I hate consoles. So that is a big thing for me to admit

I think the PS4 will, like the PS3 take a few years to show it’s true potential, and by then PC’s will have evolved to a new level, just like in this gen… Still, I don’t care and will buy the PS4 without thinking twice.

I love consoles, you don’t, and thats ok…. Fact is, we both love gaming. 🙂

Agreed. And I will give credit where it’s due. The PS4 is going to be fantastic.

It will be able to perform. The graphics above are leagues ahead of where the current PS3 is. It’s by no means a crap system.

My biggest issue is that I wish the industry would stop with false statements like “The PS4 will outperform PC’s” or “The PS4 is the world’s best PC” because let’s be honest it gives people false impressions and then they all wonder why people hate when the device fails to deliver. It may be a great console but because of false hopes it could do serious damage and I for one don’t want to see that happen to next gen consoles because it affects everyone. Including PC owners.

          • Melasco

            April 4, 2013 at 15:07

Yeah, I agree 100%, and on top of that most games will still probably originate on 360 for some time to come, and PS4 will get ports just like PC, meaning there will not be this HUGE improvement suddenly. And even IF graphics are now suddenly in a whole new level… who cares if the gameplay didn’t change much… We are all wasting energy on these debates… lol. Call of Duty games have crap graphics compared to games like Crysis 3 / BF3, yet they outsell everything….

All about the games. What I do believe, is once enough PS4’s and NextBoxes were sold and they become lead platforms, we’ll see scope in games never seen before, and that’s what I’m looking forward to!! 🙂

Play dark souls, then in blighttown there is a huge tree (Great Hollow), descend it to find an area called Ash Lake, and then tell me what you think. the music, the ambience, the level of detail in that small little area is astonishing, hell, Bioshock infinite pushed the limits far beyond my perception of a game world, and makes you think what games can really look like with true creativity…all these demo’s about how detailed the guns look or look how pretty my hair moves, bleh.

I think Xbox may have perhaps underestimated PS on this generation. Their delay of announcement is probably due to the last minute cramming they’ve had to do to get a machine out that can compete. Sony has put out a very hard to beat console here. PC can’t really be factored in too much because PC’s will always be more powerful than consoles.

I couldn’t agree more. I generally skim read the comments on the PC vs insert console debates, because to be honest, much like my fellow console brethren, I actually don’t care. I sometimes wonder why PC gamers are so desperate to remind us of the simple and obvious truths. The delightful overcompensation is actually hilarious.

“Ja… well, you know PC is always going to be more powerful than a console”
Yeah genius, we know, but we don’t care. Our eyes are on the next set of PS4 exclusives.

“Ja.. well, PC gaming is cheaper than console games”
You don’t say, we still don’t care. We actually pay less in the long run, because most of us trade in our games. When last have you traded in a game, oh … wait.. DRM… lulz.

The shit started with console noobs claiming that the PS3 and Xbox 360 were so much more powerful than PCs. This got the Master Race all mad and angry and thus the great e-peen war of 2006 started! It will be the same with the start of this generation (of consoles), even if no next gen console will be able to touch a gaming class PC (in terms of graphical capability).

Perhaps, but I think it’s also got to do with the PC dropping in relevance. In the not too distant future, PC gaming will find itself in third place with mobile and social gaming (tablets and smartphones) taking prominence and console gaming sliding to where triple A PC gaming is now. For PC gamers that realisation must be a tough pill to swallow.

But like radio eventually sidestepping for TV and TV eventually bowing to the internet, so too much the PC master-race come to terms with reality.

          • Xelus

            April 4, 2013 at 16:33

Sadly, I must admit, the PC class won’t fall, for one simple reason. On what is any app or game being made before it goes to another platform? We might be doing testing on a pc with a game controller, but consoles aren’t being used to make games, Computers are. In the gaming sector there might be a drop in PC sales, but in general, the PC Platform can’t collapse. Otherwise consoles and everything else will go with it. Consoles are computers, which kind of defy the whole purpose of the war that started in 2006.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            April 5, 2013 at 06:14

@mornelithe @Xelus @Boet A drop in relevance doesn’t mean it’ll disappear completely (don’t put words in my mouth). Take radio for instance, in this age of podcasts, digital/satelite TV, analogue TV (if you’re in Africa) etc. radio still exists, It was once the most favoured way to disseminate information, but now it runs parallel to others, but definitely less relevant then the others.

It’s the same with PC gaming. While triple A PC gaming won’t be killed off by social and mobile gaming, you have to be very naive to think that it’ll still be at the same level of prominence as 10 or 20 years before. Same with console gaming, it might enjoy prominence now, but that won’t be the case 5, 10 or 20 years from now.

They’re essentially using a computer that is NOT dedicated to gaming, to develop for one that IS dedicated to gaming. This is a m00t point…

LOL, the death of PC gaming gets announced with every new console release, yet it never happens. If anything mobile gaming will eat into the (casual) console market. Now that realisation is a tough pill to swallow.

Fair enough, but I’m sure the console developers will be dishing out games that look FAR superior in terms of what they’re doing with ‘set’ technology, compared to what PC developers are doing with ‘ever-evolving’ technology!

How many times have I seen console exclusive engines impressing me FAR BEYOND what current PC titles do.

Sorry Crysis 3, but you sure seem OVERRATED!!!

@JimLenoir:disqus Oh, I see. So all these articles written by console sites, targeting PC Gamer’s, is because of PC Gamer’s sensitivity and insecurity? I see. So it was the PC market that murdered multi-player, through closed networks? It was the PC Market that helped bring about DLC? It was the PC market that started requiring people to pay for multi-player? See, I don’t think so.

It’s actually console gamer’s insecurity with their purchasing decision, that help fuel this debate. They see someone else, with something that does it better, and just can’t stand it. So they lash out, often times without knowing what they’re talking about, which results in someone with knowledge of the subject stepping in. Often, it’s a PC Gamer, but not always. So, we’re sensitive and desperate, because we actually know more about what we’re talking about than people who respond out of passion? Right. Makes sense.

Couple that with a journalism industry that knows they can get huge responses from whipping up this debate, and you’ve got a raving success for traffic. It’s funny though, this article was pretty benign with regards to how it was written. And all of a sudden, the console defense force comes out of the wood work. Notice, there aren’t really any PC gamer’s ‘sticking it to’ consoles gamer’s. It’s a bunch of self-described console gamers, talking down to PC Gamer’s. And a bunch of PC Gamers talking thoughtfully to other PC Gamers.

Why would PC Gamer’s care? Seriously? Why would we? When have we NOT enjoyed the vast, vast MAJORITY of options and features? When have we not lead the industry in boundaries? And why would that surprise ANYONE? Don’t you WANT the test bed for future development to be enjoy more power? Wouldn’t you want them to continue to improve their engines and plan for future hardware?

And btw, retards, it’s 2013, every GPU that’s been launched in the past 5+ years has an HDMI connection. Just like the consoles. We’ve been using our TV’s for years.

Yes, PC gamers are hyper-sensitive and needs their mother’s boob to self-soothe. It’s all overcompensation. When future digital archaeologists, sociologists, anthropologists and historical psychologists study this era, they’ll all come to the same conclusion:

“PC gamers had very small genitals”.

It’s true because the Banana said so.

I don’t have to. This “debate” has no merit. What do we know?

PCs will surpass the next-gen. No one is denying this, but boy-oh-boy will PC gamers keep on reminding the console “peasantry”. Whenever there’s any news on next-gen consoles, there’s one PC gamer rambling on as if that little nugget is somehow newsworthy. That in itself is an emotional response. It’s an attempt to deflect whatever platform insecurities there is by snowballing the enthusiasm of others.

By the way, the “PC gamers had very small genitals” is a joke. It’s a play on the PC master race, since we all know the Nazis had very small junk (as Mel Brooks so eloquently put it). If you consider that some sort of personal attack, then JESUS you really need to take a chill pill.

Yea, who gives a shit, most pc gamers I know also have consoles and mobile gaming devices anyway. Go back and read your comments in this argument, youll notice your tone is childish and agressive, two things you would never expect from a console fanboy. I think its you that should take the ‘chill pill’

With the rate at which technology is moving, PC developers NEVER get to MAX out their hardware, EVER. So you’re ALWAYS using under-powered hardware, that you pay a SHITLOAD for and that NEVER SEES IT’S FULL POTENTIAL REACHED. I’ve got quite an above-average PC rig myself, but always seem to be disappointed by HOW AMAZING PC GRAPHICS COULD BE, and how well they end up being. Most of the time, I’m disappointed I feel that it’s not always WORTH THE EXTRA MONEY. With the amount of money we pump into our ‘SUPER RIGS’, how much of that money do we get back in terms of graphical fidelity? I don’t think NEARLY as much as we put in, to be honest

. PC vs Console comparisons don’t ever TRULY blow my mind. Sure, I’ll be like: “OK, I have a PC, it IS gonna look better, so RATHER PIC that platform”, but it’s usually higher resolutions, better textures, better lightning that DOES make it look better, but DOESN’T make it look THAT much better in terms of justifying the purchase price. PC’s should be blowing consoles out of the water in terms of what you’re paying, and sometimes, simply put, it just DOESN’T.

How often do we see console games, running on SHIT-old harware, but that REALLY impresses the eye…

Maybe it’s the fact that we see these beauties running on old hardware that keeps us amazed and in awe!

I feel this leads to the PC market under-developing games and bringing out mediocre titles. BRING BACK PC TITLES THAT ARE EXCLUSIVE AND BLOW CONSOLE GAMES OUTTA THE WATER AND THAT ARE NOT HELD BACK BY CONSOLE RESTRICTIONS!!!

With the direction the market’s steering in right now, I doubt that’ll ever happen again. This is a thing of the past!

You can plug a PC into a Big Ass LED TV, just as easily as you can with a console. It requires the same plug.

But you have to install. If only the PS3 was smoother in games Then I would’ve rather played on that.

So what? Many games require installation, it’s not only faster for loading and fetching information to go from HDD to RAM/CPU/GPU, it also increases the longevity of your optical drive. There’s a reason why cartridges were used originally, because the hardware can access the data far faster. The only reason CD’s/DVD’s/Blu Ray are in use currently, is because of the amount of data one game can use.

Plus, forcing devs into one method of delivering their game isn’t something I’m interested in seeing. Naughty Dog did it pretty well, but that’s their choice, as it should be with all devs.

Yes that is exactly the point of a console. You don’t have to upgrade your CPU, GPU, RAM every six months to play the next game.

Maybe you loose a little bit of graphics quality, but hey, if you’re inspecting the screen with a magnifying glass to see how many particles you can see, you’re not gaming in the first place. When I play BF3 I want to give it to somebody – plain and simple. Not worried about shading, polygons etc.

You dont have to upgrade your PC either. You just turn down the graphics to console quality and enjoy.

Well i doubt the PS4 will perform more than the PC, the specs on PS4 can outrun some of the regular PC’s but custom built gaming PC’s are better, 😉

Brian also explained why the demos are different:

“The biggest changes actually came from the merging of two separate
cinematics, the original Elemental and the extended Elemental we showed
at PS4’s launch event. Each had different sun directions and required
some compromises to join them. This resulted in some major lighting
differences that aren’t platform related but were due to it being a
joined cinematic. Another effect, in the original you could see the
mountains through the door where in the merged one we made the view
through the door white since the mountains outside were no longer the
same. Same deal with the mountain fly by. The old mountain range doesn’t
exist in the new one. These changes from the merge make direct
    comparisons somewhat inaccurate.”

And of course, you are entirely right on that the demo is not using all the potential of the Ps4. It will take some time before programmers learn how to obtain all from the bare metal.
