There’s a new, new Nintendo 3DS out this month. A hardware update that packs some extra processing power and a few other additions, the device comes in two flavours: A big screen handheld that can be used to flatten Parktown Prawns, and a smaller pocket-size version which is ideal for my lady-sized hands. Both options are available locally, as compared to the US of A where only the bigger console is on sale. And that’s because Nintendo wants to expand their presence in the US by keeping the offerings simple.
Speaking with Nintendo Life during IndieCade East this weekend, Nintendo Of America’s senior marketing and licensing manager, Damon Baker explained that the exclusion of the smaller 3DS made marketing easier on that side of the globe.
“Look, the face plates [available for the standard version] are super cool, but we’re a different market,” Baker said of the 2DS, standard new 3DS and new 3DS XL.
And now we have clear differentiation between those three systems. Before, there was a very limited difference between the 3DS and 3DS XL: other than size. It was the same resolution, same functionality. Now, there’s 2DS, 3DS, and New 3DS XL, all of which have their own functionality and features. The different price points give it a clear message for consumers. We weren’t going to win the core audience on that decision. But we had to think about expanding the user base, we had to be able to market it and make it easy to pick up for consumers.
It’s a shame really. I’m personally a bigger fan of the smaller 3DS, which is pocket-friendly and has those aforementioned face plates which can be changed on the fly. It’s most likely the console that I’m going to upgrade to, seeing as how my current original 3DS is starting to wear a bit thin. At least the one thing that both systems have in common however, is that neither one comes with a charger. I feel your pain. Brothers.

They lose a sale to me then. I will continue using my original for the time being. When a hack is released that allows me to disable region lock I’ll import a used one. They don’t want my money for this console then they surely can do without my money for other things than Homebrew is good for.
