I’ve said a number of times that I firmly believe that the next generation will be won by middleware; instead of developers and studios building all sorts of tech in to their own game engines, they’ll just use bits and pieces of other, licenced tech to make their games pretty. The PlayStation 4’s set to become a little enlightened.
Geomerics has updated its lighting engine, Enlighten, to support Sony’s PlayStation 4. while the tech already runs on current systems, it’ll add all sorts of nifty real-time global illumination to future console games.
“We are delighted to be working on PlayStation 4. The hardware is everything we were hoping for in a next generation console, and a huge step forward from the current generation,” said Geomerics founder Chris Doran.
“Real-time global illumination was a big deal for games running on the current generation of hardware, but it required developers to make some compromises. With PlayStation 4, those days are behind us,” he added.
