Hatred’s release date trailer’s cop killing makes me uneasy

Hatred cop

I have been defending Hatred. It looked like a dark, adult take on the classic twin stick shooter and I really liked the new approach. It made sense when the developers explained it, and it seemed like the guys behind the game were really intelligent and funny when they answered our questions. Now they’ve released a new trailer and it’s all about becoming a cop killer – it doesn’t quite sit right with me.

Yes, I know, the whole game was about senseless murder and genocide. The whole game could make people feel a bit uneasy, which I think was sort of the point. However, this Human Shields trailer that’s all about killing cops and SWAT teams finally gives me that sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach. Here it is:

The game is coming June 1st and I’m really curious how well it does. There was so much controversy around it – from initial announcement to its Adult-Only rating, it certainly has already been judged to be something quite hectic. Still, I’m keen to play it. Maybe this trailer makes me a bit uncomfortable, but I’m not afraid of art pushing the boundaries and making me question how I typically see things. In the end, I’m curious to see if it’s all hype, or if the game is actually a tight, dark, dual-stick shooter. Destructive Creations has done some excellent PR with these trailers to get people offended and talking about the game, but on 1 June 2015 we can see if they actually deliver a quality game.

After seeing MKX’s fatalities…this seems quite tame

You know what I do sometimes, I’ll save my current game, and go on a rampage killing everything in sight.

Take last night. Got to Hengsha for the second time (after the rooftop scene), and right before I quit to play something else, I took the upgraded SMG and proceeded to murder every civilian in sight, reload the save game and all is well.

Sometimes you just have to see how it goes, you know?

So, who is up for a braai?

Also do this, and now very glad I’m not alone.
Although Skyrim or GTA are my games of choice.

          Can I come visit?! 😉

Nah, I’m just messing with ya. I totally do the same. In fact, GTA is my game of choice for that. Find a spot I cannot be surrounded by the cops, then proceed to massacring everything in sight… And hold off the cops for as long as it takes them to kill me…

Then I go outside, for real, and proceed to… Oh wait… This isn’t that kinda sharing forum… o_O

So you can hijack a train and cause it to crash….. Wonder if it will have a passenger jet level as well? And then you crash it into a hospital or a kindergarten. That will really upset people

Watched it on mute and it looks great.

How is it different from a GTA rampage against the Man?

IKR? Just because it is the objective, now it is evil? Whereas you can do the same, if not worse, in other games

GTA atleast makes it comedic. a tongue in cheek approach.
this doesnt hide anything and doesnt pretend to be anything but fucked up.

theres a fair difference in how each game is percieved.

Spec Ops the Line has the most unsettling scene ever for me. Because at the time you think you’re burning enemies with white phosphorus and then the realization of what you’ve done sinks in. Yes Hatred is violent but I don’t think it will have to same psychological impact as Spec Ops did which had a deeper impact on me.

      GEEZ SPOILER ALERT!

Also yeah, that WP scene was one of the most horrific things I’ve experienced in a game

The only other game that had the same level of psychological impact on me was The Walking Dead Season 1. I was quite upset after some things (spoilers removed)

I dont really see why cop killing wouldn’t sit right with people. GTA and every other kind of crime game has had you killing cops, swat teams and army men for years.

No one has glorified it sure, but regardless that is absolutely no different from anything else lol.

If you don’t see the difference between this game and games like…. GTA or Postal then maybe something is wrong with you.

Sure this game looks like a remastered edition of the original Postal but at least that game came with some funny remarks and stuff. Not even the darkest game ever “Manhunt” is as dark as Hatred, since in that game you were forced to kill (and they were no nice guys).

Is there something wrong with people killing virtual entities in a game? Why do we have to “make light” of murder for it to be socially acceptable? It is what it is no matter what brush you try to paint it with and I’m comfortable with that principle in a game like this.

The moment we see a game like this enter the realm of first person with 100% IK rigs for hands as well as legs for use with VR equipment… perhaps then we will start to see mental degradation of the end user but whilst it is a 3rd party we are having commit these acts on our behalf, we won’t see this translate into reality easily.

When we have the technology at a consumer affordable price point for the masses to first hand commit these acts in a fully immersive virtual world we will have problems psychologically where what happens in the game can easily leak into the real world if that makes sense.

As it stands though there is no key difference between GTA, Postal or Hatred to me because in all cases your victims beg for their lives and whimper as you mercilessly erase them. Postal 2 was probably more violent than the new GTA 5 game though because in postal when you severed a head, it came clean off the body and could be kicked or urinated on but in GTA 5 dead bodies remain in 1 piece… no giblets 🙁

I never said it’s wrong to kill virtual people/entities in games and I never said it should be banned or something.

There will always be sick individuals who try it in the real world. However, I do think there’s a big difference between the games you just mentioned. GTA is not just about killing people, yes you do it a lot but there’s more to the game. Postal kinda is about killing people but with a lot of humor in it. This game however, is about killing and nothing more, exactly what real life psycho’s do. No emotion whatsoever.
