In completely obvious news, games are big today. Really big. Bigger than your disappointment when you file your tax returns. So it should come as no surprise that the upcoming HD re-beautifying of Halo 1-4 is going to be rather massive.
According to Microsoft, Halo: The Master Chief Collection will clock in at 65GB of hard drive real estate, off of a compressed 45GB Blu-Ray disc. With a day one 20GB patch. That’s 85GB in total, or around the majority of your Xbox One hard drive. Time to start deleting some games then.
Of course, there are various factors at play here. First off, the game does indeed look prettier. Hell, that’s the entire hook behind the collection, as HD textures aren’t exactly small. Throw in other visual upgrades and uncompressed audio, multiply by four and there you go, one massive game.
As for the patch, executive producer Dan Ayoub stated on Halo Waypoint that the size was a reflection of the desire to not cut any corners. That, and the disc was most likely too full to fit the rest of the textures in I suppose.
“Yes, the update is large, but we weren’t about to cut corners to save disc space” Ayoub said.
This ensures that you are getting every bit of Halo goodness we can fit in. Our work is not done, however, as we continue to tune, tweak and optimize the online experience to ensure a smooth multiplayer launch. This will continue right up until launch day.
Which is good news I suppose for the game. It’s bad news for anyone who happens to be on anything less than a 10Mb line, as that update is going to require plenty of overnight downloading. My 2 meg line is already screaming.

They really should’ve considered a bigger Hard Drive than 500GB. Last time I had a 500GB HDD in my pc was five years ago.

October 20, 2014 at 11:12
Will it though, I can get 20 GB overnight through Steam, AND Origin. I refuse to believe Console DL speeds are that shitty?
Can Someone please tell me what the max DL speed is on an Xbone or PS4 if you have a 4Mb line?
I must know!
ReaperOfSquirrels
October 20, 2014 at 11:28
I get 7-9GB overnight through Steam on a 2Mb line… Not everyone gets the same speeds. Some people battle to get 100kb/s on a 2Mb line, I get 200-250kb/s.

I also get around that on mine.

My line is limited to 2mb due to “distance from exchange” and I burn through around 450gb per month.
ReaperOfSquirrels
October 20, 2014 at 12:06
I average around 100-150gb a month, mainly because I don’t totally abuse my line.

Who you with ISP-wise? Mweb throttled me after 150 GB…
ReaperOfSquirrels
October 20, 2014 at 12:41
I’m with Telkom, 75% of my downloads happen between midnight and 6am… as I was throttled after 100gb one month. Now I don’t get throttled and use more data.
Skyblue
October 20, 2014 at 12:28
It’s not abuse if you’re paying for it. 3 cellphones, 4 consoles and 4 PC’s can rack up huge data bills.
Skyblue
October 20, 2014 at 11:42
The main problem is managing the downloads on console. Instead of being able to prioritize and download one item at a time the PS4 forces all the downloads simultaneouslyand the Bxone just does whatever the hell it wants to do.
PS Store is also horrendously slow on any given day but neither console is getting it right atm imo.
Johann
October 20, 2014 at 12:08
Haven’t had any issue with Xbox One download. It puts it in a queue, so it only downloads one item at a time. You can also pause your downloads at any time or change the download priority.
Skyblue
October 20, 2014 at 12:25
I had to download Forza and FIFA 15. My Xbone would keep autoprioritising even after I paused certain downloads. Neither console tells you how much is left to download in terms of MB as well, they use percentages which is useless info.
Johann
October 20, 2014 at 12:28
Yeah I also had to download it and it was a massive installation. But I downloaded Forza 5 and only then added FIFA 15 after the first one finished. Mostly been downloading smaller apps and games and haven’t had any issues with them..
CAE9872
October 20, 2014 at 12:32
My downloads did queue and Xone prioritised pretty much as I wanted – I had stored up quite a few games due to being Gold member. At least you can pause a download, unlike PS4.

Dude, 2mb is the entry level ADSL speed in SA! 1mb lines were upgraded for free to 2mb in January.
Kevin Brunsdon

That doesn’t stop the ISPs from giving out 1 mb accounts even though the line is 2mb
FoxOneZA
October 20, 2014 at 16:21
It’s only ISP’s that want to rip-off consumers that do that. A capped account from WebAfrica/Afrihost/Telkom(Telkom becomes uncapped between 12:00-7:00) is far better than a uncapped 1mb account.

While this ginormous day 1 update does kinda suck, its worth it to get as much out of the franchise as we possibly can. I happen to have a not too fast internet connection but most of multiplayer and all of the story mode will be available while the update is downloading. You can even just let it download over night since the Xbox One is always on.
