Do you happen to have a large pile of games waiting to be downloaded on your Steam playlist? Then this bit of news won’t help you get through it any quicker. Half Life is 15 years old this week, and to celebrate, a remake of the game from a dedicated group of gamers in on the way at long last. A remake that’ll be up for sale on Steam.
Now past the Steam Greenlight phase, Black Mesa will release in free and retail versions on Steam. “Our decision to sell Black Mesa rests on two key points,” the Black Mesa team wrote.
One is we believe we can make the game even better by having full access to the Source engine. This lets us tackle and fix limitations instead of working around them. The second is because frankly, our team could really use the financial help.
So what do you get for your bucks, besides the satisfaction that helped some dedicated fans out? Well, you’re getting “features that the free version simply can not have” according to the team. They’ve also got plans to open source various game assets and maps, and one day finish the rest of the mod. “Xen is still a ways off” the post read.
As for that cost, the team is promising that Black Mesa will be available at “a relatively low price.” And if that’s the price to support all that work that has the blessing from Half-Life parents Steam, then that’s fine by me.
It’s encouraging to see Valve give approval for this, and I like that there will be an easy way for players to compensate the Black Mesa team for its work. If you’re worried about the cost, however, know that it’s supposed to be “a relatively low price.”

How much prettier can you make models where the character speaks but the mouth doesn’t move…
On the serious side though, the BM Mod is nice…

Thats what I’m worried about, that they too focused on visuals and forget about the story
GalacticLordCaptainAwesomeness

Or they cast someone like JB or Brenda as the new “hero” in the story..

The voice combined with the speech pattern = fail. At least Yoda can pull it off seeing as he is a badass.
Jar Jar……not so much.

Personally I found the young Anakin Skywalker much much much much more annoying. I swear if I ever have to hear someone speak in that voice in public I will take him out of the gene pool.
grrrr 🙂
