GTA V using Nvidia Gameworks

While it’s perfectly fine to argue between whether AMD or Nvidia is the better video card purveyor, it’s a bit different when games start forcing you into making some of these choices. Take Nvidia Gameworks for example. Nvidia has had its hand in a lot of recent games, adding in some neat functionality for their card users and, unintentionally or not, making it a bit of a nightmare for the AMD crowd. Is GTA V next on the list?

Nvidia has started punting Rockstar’s money-maker over the weekend, with the game now listed with specific Nvidia features on the manufacturer’s website. GTA V will support Dynamic Super Resolution, or DSR, to help render the game at 4K on smaller monitors, as well as native 4K support and DirectX 11 features. Neither of these three are exclusive to Gameworks titles, but a fourth listed feature, TXAA, is.

TXAA is Nvidia’s exclusive method of anti-aliasing, which is meant to bridge the gap between regular FXAA and MSAA without the performance hit. Games with TXAA support are Gameworks titles, with Nvidia helping the development team implement their features in the final product. Having it listed with GTA V is a telling sign that the game was created with Nvidia Gameworks – although Rockstar has never mentioned it in the past.

Previous rumours also suggested that GTA V would make use of the Mantle API, something that neither Rockstar or AMD ever confirmed. Still, it’s nowhere to be found, and probably won’t be if the game is indeed making use of Gameworks. It is, however, odd that HBAO+ and PhysX aren’t listed either, as that would definitely confirm Nvidia’s hand in the development process.

So is GTA V actually using Gameworks? It’s tough to say, but right now it’s definitely apparent that Nvidia is getting the better side of the deal when it comes to supported software. Whether that factors into your purchasing decisions is up to you.

  1. Gives me an additional reason not to get it if I go with an AMD card later in the year.

AMD = red; because heat overload.
Nvidia = green; because AMD buyers are green with envy.

    Skipping this

Nvidia Gameworks games cant even run properly on a 980.

    Examples:

    Ass Creed: Unity
    Dying Light
    Far Cry 4

The Nvidia Gameworks have a terrible reputation for being poorly optimized for AMD/Nvidia cards. If you dispute this I suggest opening google and doing some research.

GTA V will run like a pile on PC mark my words.

I am running AC U on a single 970 at 60fps/1080p. Only thing I had to turn down from ‘maxed out’ is the AA. FXAA and it sticks to 60fps, MSAA and TXAA and the frame rate takes a hit. Not bad at all.

Cool make a video and upload to youtube so we can see, include the frametimes as well please and all cpu core usage fps and gpu core usage.

BTW we are talking everything maxxed as well.

Once you upload it and prove i then I will believe you cause it cant even run properly at max on 2x 980’s. I know because my new machine is running 2x 980’s, you must have a amazing 970 to beat sli 980’s …. I am running a 5820k 6 core cpu at 4.8ghz ….

on high setting with a r9270 on high setting averaging about 40fps which is pretty smooth and the game looks great DAI is worse optimized and the worst part is they dont even admit it

TXAA is just a feature. Yes, it’s part of gameworks but it doesn’t cripple a machine running AMD hardware. Unless the AMD hardware tries to use TXAA. Just use your standard AA methods and it should be fine.

I honestly don’t get what people are on about gameworks being so bad? Unless I’ve missed something completely?

Usually when they have Nvidia game works the games are not optimized very well (AC:Unity, Far Cry 4(although Far Cry 4 was not bad)) and it makes it so the games are not optimized for AMD at all and it can cause problems(Far Cry 4).

Yeah? The same is true when games are optomised for AMD. Then nVidia hardware doesn’t function right. It’s all developer choice really.

I’ve never played 4 so can’t tell from that example, I may give it a try when I’m on leave, but if you can reach lvl 450 it really sounds like it can be a life suck. I’ll give Fallout a try one day, which one do you suggest? Seriously though I have 18 games on my wishlist at the moment and about 30 on backlog I reckon I’ll die before I get to play everything. Need more time.

That’s why I switched from PC gaming to consoles. I don’t have the time or energy to worry about whether or not a game will run or if I need to buy new hardware. I just have to but a green Xbox game or a blue Playstation game, pop the disc in and it works. No hassles.

Providing it’s not broken of course… which it inevitably will be. Same goes for PC though.

its quite different, as Pc doesnt have unified RAM usage, thus allowing them to output details quickly but their slow but multiple tablet/netbook like cpu’s do nicely though…

besides they can simply optimise it, on PC the large combinations of different builds render it difficult to actually optimise for a billion PC users, 😐

eh I will just play on my ps3 till I get enough money to build my desktop to achieve medium graphics for 1080p for years 😛 (lol Lego. kida?)
