Mostly thanks to the ridiculous number of copies sold, Grand Theft Auto has been awarded a stack of officially recognised Guinness world Records.
“GTA totally deserves to be recognized as an icon of modern British culture, and we’re thrilled to be able to feature the game in the record books,” Guinness World Records editor-in-chief Craig Glenday said in a statement (via PlayerAttack)
“Gaming is no longer a niche hobby, as GTA 5 has proved, and how exciting that it’s taken on the might of Hollywood and won. I’m also doubly proud as a Dundonian to welcome this home-grown series back into the Guinness World Records book.”
Here’re the records the game now holds, much to the chagrin of the people who make Call of Duty:
- Best-selling action-adventure video game in 24 hours
- Best-selling video game in 24 hours
- Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
- Fastest video game to gross $1 billion
- Highest grossing video game in 24 hours
- Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
- Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure video game
It doesn’t get the award for the highest rated game of all time, which still belongs to the N64 version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time.
The game is obviously quite a hit, and outsold GTA IV’s lifetime sales in just three weeks – and will probably earn a few more records before its sales peter out. It’s also largely responsible for the entire games industry turning around, so hooray.
I haven’t even finished the Single player portion yet, let alone gone online – but I have to wonder if the game’s lost its shine for any of you, much like GTA V did after the honeymoon period.

A 2 Brute?
October 9, 2013 at 14:58
Yeah, it definitely did for me, to the point where I just gave up playing the game. And that is saying a lot. I’m normally a completionist, but GTA IV just stole all the fun the series had to offer. I’m so glad that Rockstar redeemed themselves GTA series wise. A few words to sum it up: they brought planes back!!

Yeah GTA 4 was a chore to finish. I reluctantly finished it on xbox 360, but never bothered to replay it on PS3…. :/ I just can’t go through the “Hi Cousin, it’s me Roland.. do you want to go drinks?” every 15 minutes….

I’ll be honest here, I still haven’t finished GTA 4. I have played and finished every other GTA game (busy with 5) to 100%, except GTA4, and I doubt I’ll ever finish that game.

“but I have to wonder if the game’s lost its shine for any of you, much like GTA V did after the honeymoon period.”
So… you’re asking if people have lost interest in GTA V like they did after it’s own honeymoon period?
Do you maybe mean GTA IV’s honeymoon period?

I can just fly around trying to get the bridge AP for a week. Or play the tight tennis mini game,
NOPE When the Console is switched on, all I see is PLAY DISC, nothing else enters my mind.
I finished GTA IV after 3 months, I had to force myself to finish that snore fest.
This game was designed around 1 word FUN. Even GTA SA has been knocked off the fun mantle, Sorry CJ
Skyrim was kind of there but It lacked Narrative drive and was to fiddley.
GTAV Has found the sweet spot between Arcade and Sim.
PERFECT GAME.

I’m just glad it’s not a game called Call of Duty! Here’s to you Rockstar! Keep it up!
The shine hasn’t waned for me, but other games have been elevated in my eyes – for instance… Sleeping Dogs and Saints Row 3. With the hype surrounding GTA V dying down, and all those ridiculous 10/10 reviews disappearing in the hype stink, I can honestly say that my initial impression of a 8.5/10 for GTA V was absolutely on the money.
Sometimes I surprise myself. I should have a radio show… NO! A TV SHOW LIKE NOELEEN ON 3!!!

Wait until you compare load times. You’ll struggle to go back to console gaming.
oVg
October 9, 2013 at 16:09
Good point. But I must admit that after the initial load in GTAV the switching between the characters during a mission is seamless and it jumps right into a cut scene with no load.
Skyblue
October 9, 2013 at 16:17
X360 takes a several seconds (10 or 15? haven’t counted) to switch between characters during which time I’m assuming the loading is happening.
TLOU also has a very lengthy initial load time but once loaded is pretty seamless.
Also maxing out those visuals with some AA will sure look pretty ;p
Brady miaau
October 9, 2013 at 16:50
Yip, long startup time.
Perfect for making tea in a soup mug (how real men drink it), getting nicely settled and in the right frame of mind.
After you start playing, no load times at all.
Well, if you count the switch between characters as load time, which it probably is. But it never feels like it. Well done, devs.

You know, when you play GTA V for the first few hours you have that whoah did you see that? Would you look at THAT? kind of a vibe.
But when that feeling of technical marvel falls away and you are left with the bare bones gameplay, it kind of fizzles out for me a bit. And I am left with a “I have played this before” feeling deep down.
I’ll keep playing it though. Trevor is just one amazingly written character, and he is kind of keeping me in the game a bit.
Fnuik
October 9, 2013 at 15:09
I actually disagree. Out of all the characters I like playing with Micheal the most. He is the most well rounded character of all 3.
And even now after almost 40 hours of playing the sp I still see weird and wonderful places when I drive to the next mission. I can never drive straight there, always something to get me to pull over and check out.
SaintsRowNigri
October 9, 2013 at 15:20
Trevor is an asshole through and through. But there are these tiny moments that he just shines. Like when “saving” Michael’s daughter from that Lazlo ran reality show…

ToshZA
October 9, 2013 at 15:29
And this is why I didn’t buy the game at launch. Just more of the same. They add a few new things, made it look amazing, and added crap loads of fluff and a huge world – of the same things you’ve seen and played before. This was my biggest worry.
matthurstrsa
October 10, 2013 at 07:34
But can you not say the same about Pokemon? Not trolling, its a genuine question. All sequels will suffer from that to some extent. The trick is keeping the things that made it successful while adding in enough new content to make it interesting. Its a very tough balance.
ToshZA
October 10, 2013 at 15:40
I did actually stop playing after Diamond. Didn’t play any of the fire red, leaf green, soul silver etc. for this reason.
I’ll be picking up X though, and possibly Y as well – the changes are significant enough and the gap has been long enough that I want to play again.

It was just after the jump into 3D. Mario 64 BLEW OUR FUCKING MINDS. Then the immersion of Ocarina Hyrule came a little after that, bringing its magical charm and addictive level design.
The NES version is also a piece of history. DARN that MODE 7 engine was the BOMB back in 92.
Skyblue
October 9, 2013 at 16:22
The SNES had the Mode 7 graphics (too much time on F-Zero!!). First game that I saw running 3D was Quake 2 at Incredible Corruption. I scratched together a thousand bucks the same day and bought a Voodoo2 card before the sun set.

After 90 hours I’ve reached 92%, still need to complete all the letter scraps and the alien spaceship parts and their respective Freeks and Strangers. But in the end, I’ll probably do it all over again. This is really an epic game and the numbers speak for them selves. I must say, I have also not experienced all the online issues everone’s complaining about. Just lucky I guess. 1up to R* for a great game.
