GTA V for PC delayed, system specifications revealed

Well that’s not all that surprising. GTA V was scheduled for release on PC in just over two weeks, without any real screenshots, trailers or even system specs to show. So it’s not that hard to imagine that Rockstar need a little more time with the title, as they’ve now pushed it back a few months.

GTA V will now finally grace PCs everywhere on March 24th (hopefully for real this time). Rockstar made the announcement via their newswire, while revealing what you’ll need to get the game running and some screenshots.

Our apologies for the slight shift in the date but the game requires a few extra weeks of testing and polish to make it as good as can be. Moving a release date is never a decision we take lightly and is a choice we make only when we know it is in the best interests of the game and our fans. Thanks everyone for your understanding and we assure you these few extra weeks will be worth it when the game does arrive in March.

The good news is that Online Heists will launch alongside the game, with consoles getting access to the consistently delayed feature in the weeks leading up to the PC launch. As for system specification, well they’re the lowest I’ve seen in a while (not counting the massive hard drive space required). GTA V did originally start its life as an old-gen game, so either Rockstar have worked extremely hard on optimisation or there aren’t that many PC-specific improvements.

Minimum specifications:

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1, Windows Vista 64 Bit Service Pack 2* (*NVIDIA video card recommended if running Vista OS)
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz (4 CPUs) / AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-Core Processor (4 CPUs) @ 2.5GHz
  • Memory: 4GB
  • Video Card: NVIDIA 9800 GT 1GB / AMD HD 4870 1GB (DX 10, 10.1, 11)
  • Sound Card: 100% DirectX 10 compatible
  • HDD Space: 65GB
  • DVD Drive

Recommended specifications:

  • OS: Windows 8.1 64 Bit, Windows 8 64 Bit, Windows 7 64 Bit Service Pack 1
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 3470 @ 3.2GHZ (4 CPUs) / AMD X8 FX-8350 @ 4GHZ (8 CPUs)
  • Memory: 8GB
  • Video Card: NVIDIA GTX 660 2GB / AMD HD7870 2GB
  • Sound Card: 100% DirectX 10 compatible
  • HDD Space: 65GB
  • DVD Drive

As a reference, the Nvidia 9800 GT was the the graphics card I had before upgrading nearly four years ago. It’s really, really old hardware, so most PCs should be up to scratch.

A little less excited for GTA V on PC now that it has been yanked away at the last minute? Or is that craving to return to Los Santos just too bad to ignore? Well, I know I don’t have to choose between this and Evolve now at least.

As much as we say we prefer a delay to releasing a half cocked game can Rockstar honestly sit there and say they didn’t know this was going to happen well over 4 weeks ago already?

They leave it to the last minute and screw over everyone downstream of them

Damned if they do and damned if they don’t?

Release early with bugs, gamers be like “whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh, why do publishers keep doing this to us?!!?!?!?!? #boycotallthegamesdon’tsupportdrmplay2gamesinyourlife”

Delay release to polish “They’re making excuses! Give us our game!!!!”

We’ve waited long enough for the PC version, we’ll live if we have to wait a little longer.

Wait til another company gets this right and the monopoly ends. I’ll bet we’ll then see more effort on Rockstar’s part.

One up side, I suppose, is that at least those specs aren’t the insane “you need a nuclear reactor to power your rig” like some of the more recent game-specs that have been released…

The CPU is still above what mid range rigs have. To build a recommended PC for GTA 5 from scratch should knock you back about R5k for 1080p res ultra.

Way more than 5k. The CPU & mid-range mobo alone will be nearly 5k.

Yeah ok but still I can get the CPU+Mobo+RAM for R5 500. That leaves with the GFX which a R9 270 will be enough power (R2 500) and the PSU 500W should be enough for R750. Now the Case and screen is totally debatable on your budget. So let’s agree then that a PC to run this should cost you around R10k 🙂

I’d agree. Only reason I really know is because I’ve been pricing for mine for months.

I’d wait until that comes out too, then build a PC with the older stuff that will invariably get a price cut & will be perfectly fine for years to come – then when it comes time to upgrade again that’ll be much more reasonably priced.

True and with AMD bringing the new 300 cards out and Nvidia Pascal Range coming 2016 the 900 series will drop significantly due to the pascal range having much more new features. New features that will make the 900 “obsolete”….. 2016 will be the year to upgrade a PC that’s for sure.

The 300 range is what I’m keen to see. Hopefully it’s out by May, because that’s the latest I’ll wait until before upgrading. Witcher 3, baby!

What’s your gpu specs now? Can’t be that low that you cannot even play Witcher 3 on medium-high?

            January 14, 2015 at 10:40

No it’s not, it’s a radeon 6950. So probably more low-med. But I want to play it in all its glory immediately 😀

Well. That is one of the reason I game on console. I do not want hassle. And I am IT literate. Or I used to be. Now, not so sure with the new hardware and stuff. At work I do not always play in the tech stuff

Certain games, like Civ, Total War and stuff I play on PC. But just those.

Yes, indeed. I work in IT and indeed one of my hats is as IT Manager, with a few support staff. I know how to do most of the stuff required, but do not want to spend my home time doing PC stuff when I can switch on and play, as my Xbox’s do for me.

What I know about a PC, is dangerous. I know how the mouse and the keyboard works. I know where the on/off button is. If the screen is black, its not switched on. If the screen is blank after switching on, call IT in a state of panic.
