GTA V coming to PS4 and Xbox One?

So, GTA 5 is getting an online world.  However, in the coming months, plenty of people will be migrating to next generation consoles.  Rockstar is aware of this, and while the focus has been on PS3 and Xbox 360, we might see PS4 and Xbox One getting in on the action.

At the moment, the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of GTA Online are very similar.  Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies explains:

This is probably the first game we’ve done where both platforms have been running in parallel. There’s very, very little difference in the development state of them both. They’re both very similar. It would be hard to tell them apart.

While the focus is on getting the current gen version out, he doesn’t rule out what might happen in the future:

We’ll get the current gen version out first and see what happens in the future.

Everything’s going to the Cloud, isn’t it? It’s the future, and the boxes become less relevant. It’s more about the content. It’s more about the data than the hardware. And, yeah, whether you’re on your iPad, your iPhone, your Android or your console, to me it doesn’t matter what it is. It’s a game.

Could this mean that future content might also come to PS4 and Xbox One?  If the worlds of GTA 5 and GTA Online are interlinked, we might see future DLCs or other content being released on next generation consoles.  That said, at this point, I think everyone is just dying for the game to come out, regardless of the platform.

if i knew for certain that this was coming to next-gen, and soon-ish i’d have waited. This game looks amazing and you can only expect it to look and run better on the newer hardware, that would be worth waiting for imo.

Will look sharper, cleaner, run higher fps, better rendering, more physics 😀 definitely worth the wait.

Yes moving and looking around on the PS4 will be totally smooth as if you are really there inside the environment. Total immersion. Although the PS3 version looks surprisingly good overall, you will get the familiar choppy jerks when panning the camera. It gives me a headache and eye strain. Notice how the official gameplay demo only pans very slowly to try and hide the frame rate stutter, but you can still see a few jerks creeping in even with a slow pan.

So I can forsee myself will be sitting with two copies of the same game on two platforms again somewhere in the future. The problem comes in with achievements, if you unlock them on current gen will they carry over to next gen?

That doesn’t apply to every game, only EA, UBISOFT, and Activision have confirmed this. Rockstar hasn’t said anything about it, they haven’t even started development on the next gen for this game as far as I know.

If the game comes to PS4, it will come to PC. Don’t worry. It’s coming to both at the same time 6 months after PS3 release. I’m 100% sure now they have announced GTA Online existing forever with continuous DLC updates. PS3 is in the last years of its life.

There will be no GTA 6 or 7. All GTA’s in future will be additions to the GTA Online system, adding different maps and stories each time with the singe player built into it. PS4 is a great platform to host it all on. That’s how I read it.

Look, I’m a PS3 gamer, will probably get the PS4. So I’m set. Still, I don’t like people missing out regardless of their preferred platform.

The concern for me is that the last open world type game that R* made, did not make it to the master race’s platform. Why, is still anybody’s guess. R* can decide to not release on PC for the simple reason as they see next gen console as everything they need. And why should they release on PC? It’s less in development cost considering its one platform less to worry about, and there is much less of their product being stolen if they’re only on console.

Well the game is going to be absolutely impressive on the next gen, great hardware & impressive visuals but no doubt won’t wait that long current platforms of the game are looking super awesome, getting a copy on PS3 😉

They are developing a PC version, so they already have the assets and a lot of the code in a suitable format for the next gen consoles.

The game already exists on PC because that is what devs build the game on using high res assets. The console dev machines are linked to the system in order to adapt it to the console as it’s built.

Think about it, each dev only has one or to console dev machines but there are hundreds of guys working on the game. Some studios only have one dev machine. No way is just one man making the game. There are hundreds working on high end PC’s networked together in order to built the master game. A few guys are simultaneously bringing the completed segments across onto the dev machines and adapting it so that it will run on the target console.

So the PC version is the master version. The current gen versions are scaled down ports and the PS4 port will be very close to the PC master.

When a dev states the target machine is xbox 360 or PS3, they mean the PC master version is built within the limits of that target hardware. But they may still use high res textures and models, then scale them down, just in case they do a PC port later.

In the case of GTAV, Rockstar knew the timescale of the development would collide with the next gen launch and they always release a PC version later, so they will have decided to build a cutting edge PC version from the start that can be scaled down to each console. You never scale up because you loose quality. That’s what devs mean when they say the game engine is scaleable. You can dial things down when porting it across to the dev machines in order to improve performance.

It was pretty clear this was going to happen eventually, and I think that the PS4/One versions of GTAV will be announced/delivered with the PC Version since the architecture (and resources) are far more comparable for the newer gen consoles, than for the PS3/360.

Like someone said, Rockstar are playing us like fools. Of course they’re bringing it out on the next gen consoles. For now how many people own a Xbox or PS current gen as is? Rockstar are just bleeding that resource dry then later they’ll bring out next gen version, boast of it’s ‘better graphics’ and next gen capabilities, and we’ll run like fools to rebuy something we’ve already payed for once.

For example where I live a video game store has said inside sources of theirs confirms its around the 6month mark the PS4 version will come out. Why else would Rockstar be delaying it closer to the next gen? and be so fervent as to call their own fan base ‘conspiracy theorists’ for even questioning or assuming the latter which we all know will happen anyway. Like liars who are so over the top when getting caught out when they’re lying, Rockstar are ‘overly defending’ to the point they’re taking pot shots at their own player base.

    They’re playing us like fools.

You honestly think Rockstar are just gonna let the money making possibility of bringing out GTA V to the next gen consoles let lye? I don’t think so. For the fans, when are you people gonna get it through your head, a corporation will tell you anything you want to hear just to get into your pocket. Gawd -.-

People didn’t evolve from Monkeys, they evolved from lemmings -.-

I wouldn’t say they’re playing us like fools, I’d say we’re playing ourselves if we thought even for a moment that the new installation of GTA wasn’t coming the new consoles. In fact, Anyone who seriously thought that is absolutely batshit crazy.

Makes perfect sense though, GTAV will likely release on the next-gen consoles and PC simultaneously as the resources avail on PC are currently more in-line with what’s avail on the PS4/One (Yes, I know the PC has more resources). Would be much harder, I think, to create a game direct to metal on the PS3/360, then port it to PC. Than it would be to make one for the next-gen consoles and then port to PC.

Plus, developers are in it for money, and what better way to maximize the sales revenue of GTAV than to release it on the earlier gen consoles, then 6 months later, show how the game looks on higher end hardware to revitalize sales, and to give it longer legs.

That’s a valid concern, and not entirely sure why they’d go that route. However, who knows the kind of vitriol that’s been lobbed at them from folks who feel like they’ve been slighted (PC owners, prospective next-gen owners). People like us, who stay on top of these things know how the release cycle of GTA works. Consoles first, then PC. We don’t have to like it, but we know that’s how it goes.

Not every gamer is like us though, not even remotely close. In fact, I would say that at least 3/4rs of ‘gamers’ don’t peruse forums, and seriously research these things. They’re completely ignorant of the industry and it’s inner machinations.

Not really an excuse for a developer to talk down to their fanbase, but certainly a plausible explanation.

Rockstar have no choice with shareholders breathing down their kneck. They have to call it a conspiracy theory because they have a lot of money riding on people buying the current gen version. The game cost $200 million to make. They would love to sell the game twice and make double the profit. The ethics are debatable. Some people would still buy the PS3 version anyway because they are so hyped up they cannot wait for the PS4 version and have money to burn.

That’s business. Rockstar are careful not to tell any lies. They are just hiding the truth to make money from the current gen cash cow. They rightly claim the wonderful screenshots are current gen, but no way are they PS3, they are current gen PC, which is basically PS4. A deception not a lie.

It’s up to individuals to read between the lines and see through the crap and make their own decision. I been calling this for months on loads of websites and telling people about it, but everyone just buries their head in the sand and says it’s not going to happen.

I decided to wait for the PS4 version when Sony announced a holiday 2013 console release and cancelled my GTAV pre-order. Playing the choppy PS3 version will be a spoiler because I want to play such an epic game in super smooth HD on PS4. It is definitely going to happen. GTA Online ‘forever’ confirms it if you had any doubt. My guess is that work on the PS4 port is well under way and will release 6 months after PS3 version when the sales start to dry up due to market saturation. That will place it right at the start of the new financial year in April 2014.

Rockstar have never stated it is not being ported to PS4, they have only given reasons why they want to release on current gen first because it is the largest cash cow. It has been the gaming websites who have added the text that GTAV is not coming to PS4. Great journalism eh.
