If there’s one annoying trait that a ton of sandbox games subscribe to, it’s setting the scene with boring tutorials before throwing players straight into the action. Rockstar is no stranger to this, as Red Dead Redemption took practically forever to actually get started. But for GTA 5, that game is going to throw you into the deep end right from the beginning.
“We want to surprise people with very intense missions from the start. The pace of the game is much faster than any of its predecessors,” Rockstar North president Leslie Benzies said to Jeuxactu via OXM.
Remember that the three characters in the game are already living in the city of Los Santos and surrounding areas. They are not newcomers like Niko and Tommy Vercetti, or people returning after a long absence like CJ.
They already have contacts, they are integrated with the world and lead a busy life – these characteristics should give players a sense of immediate and total immersion.
This action translates directly into the introduction itself according to Benzies, as not all three GTA 5 characters will be playable from the start of the game:
We want to give the player the opportunity to get to know the three characters individually, and explore the world as each of them, and it would not have been possible if all three had been available from the start.
GTA 5 is out in September on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. And only those two consoles. Probably.
