S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl, was one of those games that was still fun to play despite being saddled with more issues than Lady Gaga’s wardrobe. Despite all these bugs however, the game quickly generated a cult following, expansions and mods, with a sequel being a no brainer.

Except there is going to be no sequel, due developer GSC Studios closing down, so say goodbye to the digital Chernobyl and put the gun down, it’s not worth it.

Reports indicate that owner Sergei Grigorovich is closing the studio due to personal reasons, although 40-50 employees would be reimbursed with wages owed to them up February next year.

Rumours have indicated that Grigorovich is unsatisfied with the progress of S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, while other sources indicate that Ukranian law has made moves to take over the GSC studios. GSC had tweeted earlier on that “No we have not closed GSC or cancelled #stalker2?, but this has since been removed, with a further tweet indicating an announcement later today.

1C Ukraine’s Sergey Galenkin however, recently blogged about the studio closing, claiming that;

GSC is closed, a fact confirmed by all. The team is almost completely dissolved, the state has only a few people.

Galenkin then went on to say that development costs for the European audience was another reason for the closure, alongside a “failed console publishing deal”. With rumours flying every which way, lets hope that fans get an answer that they deserve as to why this potentially brilliant sequel has been scrapped.

For those of you who need a replacement quickly though, a sequel to Metro 2033 is on the way, and it might just fill that east European-accented void in your soul for a grungy FPS title.
