Get stabby in Bound by Flame

I’m becoming increasingly intrigued by Bound by Flame. If you played Mars: War Logs from developer Spiders, you’d know that it was an interesting action RPG that with the right amount of polish could have been exceptional. Their previous game, Of Orcs and Men also showed incredible promise. They’re taking another stab at RPG’s with Bound by Flame, a combat-centric, choice-laden RPG in the vein of Kingdoms of Amalur.

Bound by Flame drags you into a heroic and desperate struggle, in which the Alliance eventually yielded in front of the inexorable advance of Deadarmy.

From their castles of ice, the lord-sorcerers of Shadowcold now reign as masters on the continent and crush mercilessly the remnant resistance, of which you belong. When all hope appears to be lost, a demon of flames chooses you as its host…

Create and customize a powerful warrior, develop your skills (combat, assassination and fire magic) and call upon the devastating powers of the demon within. Find, create and improve your weapons and armor, and find help from numerous companions to help you fight Shadowdragons, Leeches and the fearsome warriors of Deadarmy in perilous and spectacular real-time battles!

And it seems…pretty good! It’s coming to PC, PS3, PS4 and Xbox 360 on May 9th, and should help you scratch that RPG itch while you wait for Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3. According to the developers, the main character – who’s fully customisable – will have full voice acting. the game will also feature a crafting system, will have a cast of NPC’s and will have your choices effecting change in the narrative. Frankly, the scope of it sounds beyond the reach of a smaller developer like Spiders, coupled with a smaller publisher like Focus Home Interactive – but that ‘s what makes it so much more intriguing.

Trying to pull of something with this sort of breadth, without the financial reserves or top-tier publishing muscle of somewhere like EA requires a fair bit of testicular fortitude. Here’s the latest trailer for the game, showing its combat in action. The names of everything are a bit generic, the hit animations are a bit laughable and the whole thing needs a bit of polish, but it’s the first “B-tier” game I’ve seen in some time that piqued my interest.

What do you think? Does it look like a fun diversion while you wait for the next AAA RPG, or does it seem a waste of time? I’m certainly keen to play it, but not at full retail pricing.

Why on earth though, did they use a guy who sounds like he’s reading the side effects of medication to narrate their trailer?

Good to see that they’re keeping it classy by not sexing up the female characters.

To be honest. Judging by the header pic, the one is either a dominatrix or a cross dresser.

Lol! Well admitting is the first step. In all honesty the combat looks really fun. Everything else has YET to feel compelling. Though will obviously give it a chance. I obviously can’t say, but Amalur and Dragon’s Dogma’s combat looked way more interesting

I found Amalur got pretty dull quite quickly. Once you hit the higher levels it’s very easy.

Extremely easy game, But I don’t know I found the gamplay to be pretty fun. Dragon’s Dogma still beats the snot out of it though (combat wise)

Is the Mars War Logs game any good? I’ve been eyeing it every time it goes on special, because it doesn’t look bad, but it seems to get very mixed feedback. Same with the Orcs game.

I assume you referring to the Pee Cee version and not 360 one when you say “on special.” I haven’t seen it on special on 360. Yet…
