Gaming: are women misrepresented? Flame On
   April 28th, 2011 clock image 12:30 pm

sonya-header

It seems to be a topic that has come up time and time again, but are Woman misrepresented in video games?  Kung Fu Factory’s co-founder Ricci Rukavina believes so. In a recent interview with CVG discussing KFF’s up and coming take on the MMA scene entitled MMA Supremacy, Rukavina’s response to the question was “On the whole, I would say yes. And I don’t think anyone would disagree with that.”

Rukavina believes that since supremacy is the first challenger to step into the octagon brandishing sports bra’s and jock straps alike, it will not only attract a larger fan base but also represent woman in a more realistic light, as apposed to other fighting orientated games such as Tekken, Mortal Kombat, and Soul Calibur. “I would say the main difference is women are typically represented in those games with an exaggerated sense of body proportion and are often times overtly sexualized”, said Rukavina.

The problem, which objectifies women and puts them in the role of a “princess in need of rescuing”, seems to stem from a statistically higher percentage of males involved in the gaming industry, according to Rukavina. “But this also happens in cinema, music, all facets of life. And then someone comes along and breaks the mould, by doing this differently. We saw a chance to do that and its fit perfectly into our plan of being a different type of game. It also fits our plans as a company.”

punch

While Rukavina’s intentions seem well placed and simultaneously promote the game as something different from its competitors, female participation in the discussion is paramount. Thus, I would love to actually hear what female members of the gaming community think about the subject.

I’m not talking about the kind of ladies who have never played a game but jump on the misrepresentation bandwagon none the less. I’m looking for opinions from the gals who are actually gamers, the ladies who purposefully subject themselves to these proposed misrepresentations because they love gaming. Are you, as “girl gamers” offended by the objectified big breasted women that frequent our screens as gamers? Moreover, with regards to this particular instance, are you offended by the lack of female representation in gaming and will the inclusion of female competitors in a game like this make you want to pick up a copy?

Telltale Games and Microsoft shake hands

  • Purple Dragon

Thats the one thing that I was surprised at in the new Mortal Kombat. Practically all the females have huge cleavage! Sonya Blade’s tits are basically falling out. I suppose it’s great for guys who love big tits, which is something I don’t understand. For example some guys love surgically enhanced tits but I personally find them quite a turn off. I guess its different for everyone.

  • EyeGod

Oh FFS. This topic again. NEWSFLASH: EVERYONE, hell, EVERYTHING is misrepresented in games. That’s kind of the POINT. IRL, very few gamers (or men for that matter) are assault-rifle wielding, pec and bicep flexing, world-saving, alien-ass-kicking modern warfare action heroes. They’re a bunch of overweight pansies who like to escape FROM reality by playing videogames, not be CONFRONTED with a very mundane and accurate depiction of real life because videogames need to represent everyone fairly.

      Ha speak for yourself ;)

    • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Lol, so true EyeGod, except for short-haired, blue-eyed, athletic, Aryan males who are definitely OVER-represented. I’m sure if Hitler was still alive he’d get a hard-on, whenever he saw a video game.
:( Damnit, I want to play as an awesome Asian guy, who is not a stereotypical nerd, or “good with maths”, but an average Joe. I’d even play as a black guy, provided he’s not LOUD AND ATHLETIC, or plagued WITH GHETTO-lingo and the curse of LIMITED INTELLIGENCE (here’s looking at you Cole-Train).

Hollywood is still stuck in the 1950s where that’s concerned, so I doubt gaming will shake the proverbial KFC bucket, and go beyond feeding us the usual crap.

        • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

California beach bum? Imagine if Nathan Drake was a Mauritian Islander, called Mauricio Drake, it would have made the first Uncharted that much more palatable. Even I felt a little uncomfortable shooting all those black guys.

  • http://facebook.com/thesteventu tuism

Yes and all men have perfect hair, HUGE biceps/triceps/arms/arsses and wield guns. Boring argument.

  • Othellia

Woman that get offended by video game females should really get over it already!!!!
None of us look like that, just like none of us look like the hot as hell actress in the movies, and just like the men don’t look like the male counter parts!!!!

  • Aussious

Yeah games use a wide array of stereotypes, whether it be Drake,Bayonetta or Cole train all are over exaggerated to some extent but their companies that have done the latter i.e the cast for left for dead (both), Mass Effect, Half Life, Heavy Rain, Alan Wake and Bioshock.

  • Knives_Chau

Good looking people are more fun to look at. You play games to enter a fantasy world, and in fantasy worlds all over the universe – people are perfect. Perfectly rugged, perfectly sexy, perfectly evil etc. I’m female, and I love watching my awesomely awesome dragon age chick owning bad guys. I love watching my perfect Guild wars chick, owning bad guys. Gaming is escapism, and it rocks, so do the boobs, do the asses, do the muscles. The real world’s ugly, why should gaming be ugly too?

  • http://twitter.com/lunasaisho Luna Saisho

Well! I suppose I should join in this one. :)

I think, to a degree, women are mis-represented, but I understand why.

First, Mario and the Princess… or anyone and the princess… That’s a fairy tale setup, and it will never ever go out of style. I haven’t seen a lot of this outside of princesses being in a different castle anyhow.

Where I think the misrepresentation is, is in how they are dressed. I realize that most players are men, but when the man is so armored that you can only see his eyes and the woman has a bare midriff, long flowing hair, and an armored skirt… Well, sure it looks good, but is highly illogical. Anyone going into battle is going to be protected. It doesn’t mean that the woman can’t be presented as sexy, but the logic in that situation is pushed just a bit for me. I’m not offended, mind you. I only find it illogical.

I don’t think that Lara Croft’s body should have been more realistic. Once graphics were good enough for her to actually have curves, leave them there. She wasn’t that out of the norm, just rather busty. Her fact is a lot cuter now, tho.

I’d love to see more playable female characters in games where it makes sense. Sometimes a story needs a male or female protagonist, and that should be respected.

    • Weanerdog

The less the female character is wearing the greater the distraction points and conseqently the better the AC. See it is logical.

      • http://twitter.com/lunasaisho Luna Saisho

Completely nuts. But I love it! ^_^ That has such backwards logic, but it works! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=586005425 Ben Louw

Since the beginning of comic books this has been going on. Noting new. Misrepresented? Duh…it’s a fkn game.

  • Confuzzled

    I’m a girl. I’m an artist. I’m a gamer fantasy nerd freakazoid…. also, I love pin ups.

Games aren’t real life. I like sexy woman just as much as I enjoy the muscle bound hero. The only thing that does annoy me, from a purely aesthetic view… is breasts that are so gosh darn large they look like the woman stuffed balloons down her t-shirt. I find it rather off-putting.

The world has moved on from saving the hopeless princess. Games have strong women in them. They’re sexy, but they kick serious ass none the less. I like that. I don’t like the weak woman that needs the man to rescue her… but games have gotten past that stage.

So no, I don’t think filling a game with butch women who have no sex appeal is a smart move…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1144841842 Nathan Berry

Well, in recent games females have been granted the role of protagonist. What about The female commander shepherd ?? She wasn’t over Sexualised at all

      • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

That’s a good point Nathan, Fem-Shephard was/is a pleasure to play, and even Fem-Hawke in Dragon Age 2 is good (ignoring the pile of manure DA2 was).

        • Confuzzled

Armoring someone up doesn’t make them unappealing. Heck, there’s a whole world of guys out there that go gaga for the tough gal.

Thing is, both those examples? I’m still saying they’re sexy women. They don’t look like the everyday lass and they’re a far cry from muscled boxer women wearing sports bras…. (and that probably appeals to some men too, mind….)

But seriously, that picture up there? Yeah… I wouldn’t be excited to play one of those ladies. I’d much rather get my freak on with thunder thighs Chun Li.

  • http://www.facebook.com/banie.joubert Banie Joubert

As a gay guy, girls with big boobs in games do little for me. I play because I love games you can lose yourself into. Its the story, drama, etc. that draws me to the game, and having great music helps allot.

I do think that games have gone along way in representing woman. Just look at games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age were you can chose to play a male or female hero. Although I prefer to play a male hero, its a personal preference, but I’m sure that there are plenty of girls out there who would want to play someone of their own sex. I do think that the voice acting for female heroes can be improved (the female Shepard is not nearly as good as the male one) but allot of progress has been made.

I also love the fact that you can have a gay romance in Dragon Age 1 and 2. I hope they do the same with Mass Effect 3, but I doubt it. But this is going off topic. As games grow, they will continue to be more inclusive of everybody out there.

    • Aussious

I have to stress that I strongly disagree with you Banie, in my experience Jennifer Hale did an exceptional job in potraying Shepard not just as a female but a Commander. Not to down Mark Meer but I found his perfomance a tad bit lacking…I’m on my third playthrough with Female Shepard and I must say it get s better with every plsythrough… Also another note worthy female voice actress is Kimberly Brooks as Ashely Williams, great character with great acting.

  • http://twitter.com/brandingandwine Robyn Saul

Look Bioware are good at allowing women to create the character they desire to play, and I really appreciate that they adapt the plot and dialogue to to the character’s gender, but wow, I really hate the plot options they craft sometimes.

They seem to have decided that girls, and therefore girl-gamers, need extra angst and drama. They work so bloody hard to have Alastair try to sacrifice himself in Dragon Age 1 if you’ve entered a relationship with him, because somehow they believe that us woman still want to sit down and weep at a good old tragedy.

Such crap! As pointed out earlier, gamers (of either gender) are escapists, and frankly, I don’t want my happy ending turned into some epic drama or messy heart-wrenching loss.

Oh, and on the more general topic – don’t mind the hot girls, but the stupidly oversized-tits that look like they’re just about to pop out of the tiny costume – that’s one step too far. No-one going into combat is going to put something on that requires that much double-sided tape – and no fighter is going to have paid a plastic surgeon that much for impeding silicon sacks. Sigh, but then as a 30 year-old female, I’m not the target market which is usually 14 to 24 year-old males…

  • Nick de Bruyne

Wow, I must say that I really enjoyed reading through the comments thread for this post, so many very valid and well said points. +100 points to everyone here.
