Yesterday, our beloved pet poodle, Matthew called the day the first day of Gamescom, but he was somewhat mistaken. The first real day of Gamescom was today. We took the opportunity on this first day – open only to media and trade visitors – to scout the halls, looking for cool stuff. That was the plan anyway.

And then Gamescom’s organisers decided to open the whole thing up to 10 000 members of the public, making the place very nearly as hellish as the rest of the days. Still, we did manage to put aside some time to wander the halls and snap a bunch of pictures for you to eyeball.

Writing audit reports. I had to decipher and translate code igniter to mysql to join four tables with multiple where clauses in a specific date range. Should have studied harder to become a veterinarian

            Sounds like fun. Or not.

Yeah, in my career as developer it seems all the best work is done after hours. You know, the really cool stuff. White heat of 03:00 AM, smoked about 40 cigarettes since 20:00, drank about two litres of tea, but the good stuff is flowing and some serious development problems were solved. (Disclaimer, also sometimes I would read what was done the night before and just delete it. And I stopped smoking a few years ago)

Now, I seem to read more reports than I write. Progress?

Definitely seems like progress. At least that’s what I believe management does.

Ah yes, management. Sometimes I wonder. Smaller companies do things differently, I think.

and after hours rocks. funny, now that I have a child, I seem to magically leave work on time now though. Still go in a bit early

After hours is the best, when the phone doesn’t ring and the mails stops for a bit.

Truer words cannot be spoken. I’ve just finished testing my voucher redemption code and am about to push it up to the SVN.
