Gamergaters have created a website outing ‘corrupt’ journalists

It’s the gift that just keep on giving. #GamerGate will not lie down and die, and the die-hard Gamergaters have now created their own website to publicly call out the corrupt actions of the video game journalists.

DeepFreeze.it has become a veritable who’s who of the anti-Gamergate league with a large number of white knights and SJW’s in the list. But is this a real listing of corrupt journalists or is this just some people with an axe to grind?

Well for me personally it looks like a bit of both. There are some very well researched articles highlighting some dubious acts by leading journalists and then there seems to be some far reaching attempts to simply sully someone’s name.

The one that really jumps out at me as a smear campaign with no basis in fact is the accusation against ex-IGN journalist, Colin Moriarty. There’s accusation is that Colin defended Mass Effect while IGN were receiving a ton of cash for Mass Effect advertising.

Started the myth of the “entitled gamers” with a caustic video on IGN criticizing gamers for protesting Mass Effect 3’s ending and DLC, while IGN was heavily advertising the game.

Here is an edited version of the video that apparently shows how corrupt he is:

Personally I find it offensive to imply that a journalist can’t have, what is obviously, a personal opinion on the industry just because his employer receives money for advertising the game.

But then they have some accurate criticisms like the one against Cara Ellison who is a freelance journalist for many sites.

Gave positive coverage to Fullbright company and their game Gone Home, on no less than sixarticles, without disclosing her relationship with Fullbright’s Steve Gaynor and Johnnemann Nordhagen, who also supported her on Patreon.

and

Gave positive coverage to text adventure developer Porpentine in at least five articles, without disclosing their friendship.

That sort of thing is dodgy and should be called out.

Whether this site ever actually succeeds in changing anything is yet to be seen but at least now when people ask what Gamergate is and what are their publically-stated goals are you can point them to a single site.

But as an wise old asian once said (in our company chat this morning):

a faceless, leaderless movement can never achieve anything, because anyone can transgress its goals under the same banner

Defending that Mass Effect ending is the worst kind of corruption! Worse than stealing the national pension fund to build E-Tolls.

I personally felt it embraced how futile all of our actions are in the eyes of the universe. I feel that any other ending would be a cheap cop-out for whiny gamers. The message they created was perfect. Everything we do, say and are – it’s all insignificant in the eyes of the universe. None of it really matters. In a billion years we’ll be gone, but the Universe will carry on as before.

            May 11, 2015 at 14:07

It’s never ok to lie, but we do expect it from EA, do we not? That’s the shitty truth. Much like the truth shown in the ending of ME3. People can’t handle the truth. People don’t like it. But I love it.

Nah I was extremely dissapointed at ME3 after the great job they did in 1 and 2. The Extended cut helped quite a lot and I would not ever tell anyone to finish the game without it.

            May 11, 2015 at 14:11

Personally I think ME3 was the best in the series. Ending and all. It was amazing. And now I need to play it again. DAMMIT.

If I was not buys with Kerbal again I would most likely be playing ME as it is my go to game. However I lay the whole series from start to finish and not just 2 or 3.

            May 11, 2015 at 14:13

Me too. Hence the “DAMMIT”. :/

But Bioware said everything we do matters. I wanted to go Renegade but I chose Paragon throughout ME2 and then ME3 because I was scared that I would get the bad ending. But that wasn’t true and I felt cheated.

          • Pariah

            May 11, 2015 at 14:09

I didn’t. But again, that’s how I feel. Most gamers agreed with you, so it’s not an incorrect position to be in. Neither is mine though, so I’m glad they kept the original ending in for the experience I want, rather than the experience other people whined for. 🙂

          • Hammersteyn

            May 11, 2015 at 14:13

I whine because I got three scoops of vanilla and not strawberry, peppermint crisp and blueberry like I asked for.
But I got ice cream none the less I guess…..

          • Pariah

            May 11, 2015 at 14:17

No, you got the strawberry, peppermint crisp and blueberry you asked for, but instead of choosing which topping, you got chocolate sprinkles on all of them. Whine all you like, hundreds and thousands or chocolate sprinkles, or whatever topping you want – the ice cream is still damn good, and the topping is too.

Remember, there was 30+ hours in just ME3 BEFORE the ending. Can’t judge the size of an iceberg by just the tip.

I’m all for a site like this IF the proof is there. As long as there is substantial investigation done on the articles with results then it’s all cool.

But remember folks. Things can be made out to be far worse than it is. It’s so easy to pick and chose your “investigated info” to make anyone look bad.

Speaking of, GamerGate need a figurehead. Feminsism has Anita Sarkeesian. Perhaps GG need Juanita Sarkasmeen or something…

I’m fully supportive of this site. It just goes to show that even though mainstream gaming media tried to bury gamergate with all sorts of falsehoods, or trying to dismiss the group as “a right-wing day care for the klu klux klan” to even “a terrorist group, like Isis”, the group just keeps on going and growing.

I recently read a twitter discussion on whether deepfreeze.it is “ethical”, and it’s interesting because when anti-gamergate were targeting individuals who were sympathetic to gamergate with blacklists, blocks and even blatant harrassment (like contacting their employers etc). those who are currently talking about “ethics” were silent and some were even supportive of those actions.

You can’t apply ethics when it suits you, or only against ideological standpoints that you disagree with. If you have a baseline of what is considered to be ethical behaviour, then it has to be applied equally. You can’t have your philosophical cake and eat it too.

Does deepfreeze go too far? Not really since, many of the “journos” portray themselves as individuals in the public domain (by their own admission), and therefore much like with mainstream reporters/journalists or even politicians, their actions have to be scrutinised. You can’t have situations where individuals write glowing reviews for friends or have vested interests in areas where there might be a conflict of interest.
