FTLA

Punishing rogue-like space sim FTL is a favourite among many of you – and you’ll be glad to know that the game’s content expansion, branded as FTL: Advanced Edition is coming next week. Best bit? It, and all other content packs will be free. Take that, paid-for DLC!

The developers confirmed this news on FTL’s site, saying that FTL: Advanced Edition will be available on April 3. Here’s what’s new

  • An entirely new playable ship and race, the Lanius;
  • 10 new playable ship layouts;
  • 4 new Systems & Subsystems that drastically change gameplay;
  • Over 15 new weapons & drones and 11 new ship Augmentations.
  • New music from Ben Prunty and new events from writer Tom Jubert and guest writer Chris Avellone.
  • Tons of other new content and gameplay tweaks and polish.

Also on that date, subset games will be releasing the much-anticipated iPad version of the game, ensuring that your productivity reaches an all-time low.

Here’s what they say about the iPad version

  • It is the full and complete PC game with no ads or In-App-Purchases and will be priced the same as the PC version at $10.
  • It will run on all version 2 and later iPads.  It will not be available for version 1 iPads and will not be available on iPhones.
  • Its UI is completely redesigned for touch control optimization.
  • It includes the new Advanced Edition free expansion which will release for PC at the same date.
  • It is only available in English for the time being.
  • It is unable to connect to PC versions of the game to share the same save game or profile data.

I think FTL is one of those games that really could shine, much like Desktop Dungeons would. It’s the sort of thing that could easily keep you glued to your tablet. Here’re some screens of the tablet version.

    Still haven’t defeated the farking game. Done another few ‘playthroughs’ this week. Solar Flare took me out after swarm of mantis boarded my ship last night, while for the first time I had some epic guns. So frustrating, but can’t help coming back for more. 🙁
    (Maybe I should read some guides).

      You are not alone. Been to the final boss a few times. Even got to the 3rd stage fight once… But then my crew decided that they needed oxygen to breath. Silly buggers.

        Good to know, was starting to feel like an utter noob. Also made it to the boss a few times. Closest I got was being able to take only but minor damage, but unable to dish any out. 😛

        Screw work. Going to read some guides now. 😀

          For the final fight:

          Have a transporter. First wave send your away team to the triple missile launcher and disable that bugger. Cloak also helps nicely.

          Try to beam in and kill the lone gunner in each of the 4 gunnery stations (will make future disables easier since there can be no repair with no dude alive)

          Second wave focus all your fire on the drone control system. Keep them disabled, if you have a drone for anti missile defense, it can shoot down the boarding drone and save you some issues. Don’t repair hull breaches where it comes in, rather focus on getting drone system down/disabled on enemy ship.

          If you are taking too much hits here, retreat, repair and attack again. See if you can take out some of their dudes. Helps a lot.

          Last wave, focus all fire on the super shield, once its down, beam in again and start with the triple missile (nasty bugger that). Don’t even worry about shooting the medbay, transporter, engines or helm here.

          Stay alive, you can jump away, but like I said, get the dudes first.

            I’ll help you out with more tips, early mid and late campaign. What ships to use what tactics on, what to do, what not to do.

            I’m really hooked on this!

            Always wanted to be a Starfleet Captain, but alas, promoted to Admiral Chief you see

            I’m pretty sure that a fleet of space ships intended for battle would have an Admiral.
            Unless I’m getting the ranking wrong, in which case the Admiral would have several fleets under his command.

            You are correct. However, in this game, you play the role of a Captain

            Sounds like so much work. Just get a drone ship with 4 attacking drones and your guns must be emp guns that disable the missiles. Easy win

            and get a cloaking unit
