Free PlayStation Plus for life?

Here’s an odd one. A gamer has contacted VG247 about a bug in PlayStation Plus’ trail system . According to said tipster, he’s been able to extend his free 14 day trail indefinitely, and now has PlayStation Plus until 2035 – all without spending a cent.

What he did was sign up for the trial – having never subscribed to the service before – and after inputting his credit card details, was allowed to extend his subscription in free 14 day intervals. It’s rather bleedingly obvious that this is a bit of a software glitch

“Once you accept the deal, you are allowed to keep extending the 14 free days for free once prompted after confirmation of the free purchase. All you have to do is keep pressing X and you keep getting 14 free days added to your free subscription. The hundreds of email confirmations from Sony all say $0.00?

In the interests of SCIENCE! we tried this out ourselves using a faux US account and a virtual credit card, and can indeed confirm that it doesn’t work at all – so it’s probably been patched up already. Not that you should do this sort of thing; PlayStation Plus is already tremendous value, giving you thousands of Rands worth of games every month, for R500 a year.

Plus, with you having to input credit card details to do this, Sony could easily make the lucky fellow pay up or, more likely just take away ill-gotten bounty.

“The gamer was later shocked to find out that the tip he reported & subsequent article about it led to his accidental windfall being rectified by Sony. How did Sony find out you may ask? According to a Sony representative the key to their uncovering the glitch was the ability to read, but we’re not so sure. So much for anonymity on the internet.”

If you did that then the next time someone finds something like this they’ll probably tell their friends and profit rather than letting you know about it.

It’s like making an awesome game that cannot be played thanks to DRM and expecting people not to get the playable pirated version.

I’d ban him for life and revoke his breathing rights… But that’s because I’m cruel and vindictive! 😉

I always felt Sony undersold PS+. R500 a year is nothing compared to the backlog of games they create when you sign up.

I am hoping that they keep the quality games coming. I fear that these freebies may hurt some game devs/publishers and push Sony to stop giving their games out.

Idiot…, why report such. Free subscription to one or two people won’t hurt Sony at all.
