ProjectFiona

Hey, remember Razer’s Project Fiona, a windows-powered gaming tablet that looked like somebody sticky-taped two PlayStation Move navigation controllers to the side of an iPad? It was butt-ugly and terribly overpriced back when it was in the prototype stage at the beginning of last year. It’s now a real thing! It’ll be available within the next few months and it’s still butt ugly and terribly overpriced!

Razer, who really makes genuinely innovate products for PC gamers, took to CES to show off their gaming tablet, now called “Razer’s Edge.”

It’s actually relatively beefy.Running Windows 8 proper, it includes a 10.1 inch 1,366 x 768 touchscreen, an Intel Core i5 chip, 4GB of RAM, and a 64GB solid state drive and is capable of running just about every game in your steam library. It does have a negative though, in that its graphics are powered by a pretty weaksauce NVIDIA GT 640M GPU – which, if you’re paying attention isn’t even powerful enough to stream games to Nvidia’s Shield.

Project Fiona becomes Razer Edge, starts at $999, sans controller

Worse is that the hideous controllers are no longer attached; they’re now an optional extra, attaching via a dock, clocking in at an extra $250. It’ll launch with a host of other similar peripherals, like keyboard docks and the like. It’ll also be available in a “pro” configuration, ,with a a faster Core i7 chip, 8GB of RAM, and either 128GB or 256GB SSD.

While it might be a pretty impressively specced tablet, I put it in a similar category as the Shield. I just don’t see PC gamers flocking to this thing. The $1000 that the lowest possible configuration costs could fund some pretty sweet upgrades.

What do you think? Is the Razer’s Edge an awesome innovation – or another silly gimmick? Much like the Shield, I’d be ecstatic  if one was given to me…but to part with $1250 to play my PC games in a lower resolution with worse performance?

No thanks.
