FIFA and other EA Sports to benefit from Ignite

EA is excited about Ignite, comparing it to Frostbite. They may be going on and on about Human Intelligence and Living World, but what does it all mean? What it means, is that the innovation is going to come fast and hard for years to come.

Andrew Wilson, Executive VP of EA Sports, explained to IGN that Ignite will allow greater sharing across sports portfolios:

“However, the versions of each technology and the investment that was being made for that technology was somewhat disparate across the various franchises. So FIFA could build something into physics, but Madden would never get it – because they were on a different branch of that particular code base. So what we did this time wasn’t so much about getting a single engine – although that is what has facilitated the fundamental shift we’re about to embark on – it’s we’re all investing in a single code base.”

This means that if UFC builds something fantastic into the physics engine, FIFA and Madden will benefit from it. With all the teams working on different elements of the games, this will multiply the innovation effects.

“It’s not just about the shared technology; it’s about aggregate investment in innovation now across every team that feeds back in, and that is going to be accelerated for us in year two, year three, and year four.”

I think this could have fantastic effects on future sporting games. Not only will this help existing franchises such as FIFA, UFC and NBA Live, it can also help with long requested franchises. Can you imagine a proper rugby game with all the physics, animation, rendering and audio technology of Madden and FIFA combined? It makes it that much easier to add a sport to the catalogue at a high quality. Perhaps we will see long requested titles: a fantastic Cricket title, or Rugby, or even bizarre things like Curling. This opens up a lot of opportunities for new sports, while rapidly improving existing titles. Very exciting stuff for sports games!

I’ve read somewhere over the weekend that FIFA14 for the Vita is just a rehash of FIFA13, which was a rehash of FIFA12. So the question is, why do they need a new engine then?

Hmmm, all this AI talk has me waiting for the first AI player strike.
I’m just very annoyed that EA won’t feature the new tech on PC this year for FIFA. They’ve said that it will be only next-gen initially when PC players not only have next gen but are prob a 1/4 way into the next-next-gen.
