FFD: You no longer matter. Deal with it.

FFDcore

If you’re reading this site it’s because you’re either a) a “core gamer”, b) here by accident by clicking the wrong link on News24 or c) you have exceptionally good taste and are endowed like a mule. Even if you’re female. Chances are, like us, you love video games and have been playing them for forever. You’re entrenched in the culture of video games. You’re the sort of person who’s helped the gaming behemoths become what they are. And you’re increasingly becoming irrelevant.

Gaming is changing. It’s becoming more and more mainstream, and more of a pure commercial product than an entertainment medium. And no, I’m not just talking about Microsoft’s Xbox One Reveal – although from what we’ve seen, their focus most certainly has shifted away from the core gamer. Games themselves are changing, becoming more and more accessible and “socially” integrated.

The last game I can think of that was really made for the traditional gamer of old, Dark Souls, is getting a sequel – and in an effort to appeal to more people, even that’s going to be more accessible. The thing is that we “core gamers” no longer exist. We aren’t the core. The core, now, seems to be the beer-guzzling, terrorist-shooting, fantasy f*cking sports playing, Angry birds-loving TV enthusiast. They’re the ones buying consoles to play Call of Duty and FIFA en masse, they’re the ones who walk in to game stores and buy random things on a whim.

You’re not the core. You’re the fringe. And you no longer matter.

Discuss.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

I was going to rant about how the industry has lost the plot but… but… I just can’t do it… It hurts too much that they have forgotten us. They have left us for a younger version of us with a shorter attention span *Starts crying inconsolably*

    • Admiral Chief Commander

Its cool man, it’s cool. We have our steam specials at ridiculous prices :)

      • Brady miaau

        too true

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

*sniff* But it’s not the same. Unfortunately even the specials I just kind of glance over as most games just aren’t games anymore. There are very few that grab my attention.

The problem isn’t so much the price of games (although that is still a relevant hurdle to jump), it’s the fact that games just don’t feel like games anymore.

I’m not sure how to explain. But most games have lost their appeal and “woah” factor.

Sometimes a gem comes along (Bioshock Infinite) but even that holds your hand. With unlimited health and ammo so to speak (Elizabeth randomly finding extra ammo and health for you) it’s still lost the intense feeling of not needing to die. Instead you simply die, and rush, die and rush until the enemy is gone. No real consequence. No need to stratagise.

In the old days you still had to think. Even if you could save at a specific point and just keep re-loading you had to THINK about how best to approach situations so that you don’t screw up your chances later on.

Now games hold your hands so tightly that you can’t lose your way later on.

I think that is why I liked Metro so much. Decide not to stock up on specific ammo and waste it? Well you are in for a shit ride later on man. You are going to suffer and you will need to reload a very early save file so that you can try and rectify the low ammo issue you have now.

Things like that. What happened to games? When did finishing a game become a given? Why must it hold my hand all the way and spoon feed me?

        DO NOT WANT spoonfeeding!

        • Admiral Chief Commander

I don’t get it ….MS had gamers in the bag with 360, but they are so busy chasing after Apple and they are so greedy to get a chunk of those markets that they seem to forget the huge gaming market. Gamers a very loyal and will support you if you are willing to cater to us. Yes details are hazy about PS4 , but tell me now you didn’t feel warm and fuzzy with Sony’s conference, because they focusing on the gamers and in all honesty they woed the shit out of me. But please people, we too are going to be the downfall of gaming … We should ban together and say STUFF YOU MS and not buy this shit man …. we vote with our money …. but then again are there enough of us willing to make this stand …. but in any case, don’t support ONE, Stop buying tacked on DLC, stop being okay with this mediocre trash we are given ….. Let us stop being cows for these greedy mutha fudgers …..

You know as much as people say that … I don’t want to believe it lol ……… but even then, Core gamers can at least band together …. at the very least if sony pulls the same krap, support Nintendo. I don’t ever see Nintendo going this route, could I be wrong though?

    • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

Neither Sony or MS will get my money. This brings me to my other point. The only area that’s still inviting to the Core gamer is the PC. The only place where we have control. I just had 2 fantastic experiences recently with MoH: Warffighter and Bulletstorm. Those are 2 games that the media ripped to shreds. Play those games to the end and they both tell stories of human nature, something that’s lacking in the so called AAA games. Oh and both those games cost me nothing more than R90. They were so cheap in the first place that I care zilch about 2nd hand sales. I’m thinking Steam Box will save us all from this console BS.

      • Umar ‘No Shana’ Bastra

Indeed, they should never get our money. agreed on PC but I wish they push more for vita, it has potential to be a core gaming system, 3DS is already light years ahead

        • FoxOneZA – X-Therminator

The Vita has so much potential but it’s getting neglected. Sony have lots on their plate at E3 this year. Luckily the PS3 has 3 more exclusives coming to keep the current gamers busy until the next E3.

The problem is the gaming industry has turned its back on existing consumers and are attempting to attract new consumers through killing second hand games and cheap gimmicks (eg Call of Duty dog).

It’ll come to a head pretty soon, once existing customers decide they’ve had enough.

      I completely agree with you.

  • Deon Steyn

Firstly I blame Activsion and EA. Kings of yearly releases,DLC’s,repacking the same game over and over (FIFA, TIGER WOODS,NFL,COD),micro transactions and screwing over consumers with sub par games like SimCity.

Secondly I blame this so called core. Texting, Bieber loving, little bastard generation who thinks rocket jumping is something you find on Redtube for blindly following a trend like fish in a stream. For ruining games like Bulletstorm because it’s not like COD and destroying all hopes for a sequel.

Lastly Microsoft, The XBOX One clearly is marketed with the arrogance and ignorance of the mostly overweight country that has become so lazy that they can’t even be bothered to pick up a remote to change to TV in mind. No Xbox can do this for you. Screw the people in other countries who want to partake in the Xbox One, it’s clearly only meant for the US with it’s exclusive content. Order another pizza you fat bastards.

Thank you for trying to get our tempers up today, but in all honestly I cannot be bothered anymore.

I will stick to my Trusty PS3 and PC, play the Gems out there. There have been so many games that I have skipped over the past couple of years, that will now be getting my attention.

I think it is time to Raid Steam, and the PSN for those Gems (Final fantasy series, MGS, Gran Turismo etc)

It has been a steady decline for a while now, this unending trend to supply the sheep with the copy and paste crap. I for one am out.

I won’t buy shitty games (COD, NFS, Simshitty)
My Randela’s will be spent on Brilliant content, and only that, no DLC ridden crap, no 8GB day one patch nonsense.

    @Geoff

If you think about it, the games industry we have today is still fairly new. It’s changing & growing very rapidly – so priorities will always change because most companies will chase the money or try to control the direction of the market for their own benefit, which is what’s happening now. It’s not the entire industry going that way though, it’s the behemoths who lose money selling 5,000,000 copies of a game. Although I think they have lost sight of the fact that their customers are the ones who are important most important, not their shareholders, and don’t seem to realise that while they may want to appeal to a broader base, kicking their original loyal customers in the teeth to do so isn’t a very clever move – because while there may be less of them, they buy more per head.

While “core gamers” may be getting less attention from big publishers, they’re not the only ones releasing games. Indie games have exploded over the last few years and are getting much bigger in scope, crowdfunding is growing, and there’s still publishers who don’t just appeal to the lowest common denominator. Even then, just because a game is “dumbed down for the unwashed masses” doesn’t mean it’s not fun. Dead Souls was damn difficult, but it was also fair, there is also such a thing as being too difficult. While a cool franchises can be stuffed up ala Dead Space 3, which sucks giant donkey balls for that specific game, there’s always something else to play, we don’t have one big must-play game a year any more.

I’m still fairly optimistic about gaming in general. One door may be closing, but others are popping open all the time.

I think people are currently defining the whole “core” gaming thing incorrectly, I don’t consider myself a hardcore gamer I’m more of a casual gamer in the sense that I mostly play games because of the stories they tell, I’m not a completionist and I love collecting games hence I have a collection of over 300 games. I consider a friend of mine a hardcore gamer because he painstakingly build up a PC rig for over 25 grand spends night after night raking up high scores and the only reason he owns an Xbox is because he wants to achieve the highest gamescore possible. People that play Angrybirds birds on their cellphones or social network games should not be considered gamers at all, simply because they did not buy that device to game. Hence I pose this question to everyone how many people do you know personally that bought an game console to download movies, play music and watch TV? My point being people buy game consoles to play games, its always been that way and its not about to change There are over 154 Million (PS3 & Xbox 360 fanbase) gamers in the world right now that bought their consoles to play games not for multimedia. The Wii was an exception to this rule not the norm and if you look at its distorted lifespan this is very evident. THIS IS WHY MS ON THEIR CURRENT TRAJECTORY WILL FAIL DISMALLY!

There are too many developers , gaming consoles and devices competing for the budget and time of the core gaming enthusiast , some are going to fall off the bus sooner or later.

I noticed this some time ago when games that used to be fun became more about action and heading in guns blazing than stealth or strategy.

It was a sad day and I’m hoping every day for a crash in the gaming market so they can rethink.

Gnnnnnnnnnnnnnhhhhhhhhhhh, dark souls. So stuck, I cannot stop playing it. I keep dying, I keep dying. I want to stop dying, but I don’t want to stop playing. This is like a auto injector for cocaine, it never ends.

We’ve had lengthy discussions on whether the casual market is really the el dorado or whether publishers and hardware markers are slowly digging their own graves. I think the problem is numbers. The gaming industry only sees numbers and potential revenue, instead of a sustainable industry that will still be around in the next 20 years. That’s also partially why greed has become the number one rallying call for publishers and hardware makers. If you think about it, this has actually been the worst gaming generation to date, and it seems the next one is going to to be even worse.

Core gamers tend to exaggerate their contribution to the industry, but by in large, we are loyal, and that brand loyalty is something that the casuals rarely have. It’s great if a casual becomes a core gamer (after all we were all once innocent non-gamers), but the Wii has shown us that this can be shaky .. They’re currently struggling because their core has left for greener pastures, and their casual fan base has left them for the new Samsung phone, or ipad or packet of nik naks.

I think this generation will be interesting, because it’s going to leave a lot of the core angry and frustrated, and gaming itself a little different. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing, depends on whether console gamers will accept the changes coming, or whether we shift to predominately PC gamers or even become non-gamers all together. The latter would be very extreme, but I guess in my case, I’d just become a retro gamer, and enjoy the games of my youth.

Come to think of it, I need to replay Breath of Fire again.

    Core at last yippee

It sounds like I may part of the new core…. :(

However, I do enjoy some retro gaming from time to time. Going all the way back to pokemon red, punch out, and super mario bros. Maybe there is still hope for me.
