Oldboots

For some reason this generation, we’re getting reboots and remasters of games that are barely a year old. That hardly plays up on the nostalgic factor that gets people excited about remakes and reboots. I’d rather get a reboot of something from forever ago. Last generation, we some some revivals of games that genuinely needed the resurrection, most notably the friggin’ excellent XCOM: Enemy Unknown. But what other games could do with a worthy reboot?

I was reminded the other day of an old platformer from the early 90’s by the British developer Bitmap Bros – and it’s one of those games I played on PC that made me realise that I really bloody liked games. That game is Gods, and it’s ripe for a return.

Other games from over 20 years ago that I’d live to see make a return are Heretic and Hexen, those lovely first person shooters with a magical and occult bent. I’d also play the hell out of a decent remake of 1986’s Defender of the Crown. It was given a bit of a reboot in 2003, but that game sucked hard.

Of course, whenever posts like these are made, some numpty inevitable says “BLACKTHORNE!” in caps, and that would indeed be pretty rad.

This is a topic we’ve discussed before- but I’d like to know anew what games you’d love to see remade. Crawl back to the dark recesses of your memories, and think of some less common games you’d love to see given another chance.

My first thought was Dungeon Keeper, the original with it’s expansion “The Deeper Dungeons”. The Second one and this online one was total crap. Bring back the original, no changes to gameplay, no changes to features, just better networking, better graphics. Would be pure win!

While it’s not an official reboot I am keeping my eye on War for the Overworld. Here is the steam link if you want to check it out:

Hopefully they will pull off a great game and we can relive the DK experience.

Crusader. Omikron Nomad Soul. Vampire Bloodlines. Those are 3 old games I’d love to see get a reboot.

There’s tons of older titles I’d like to see rebooted but have something in the same vein released/being released – Wing Commander has Squadron 42, Baldur’s Gate has Pillars of Eternity, etc

I played the hell out of Defenders of the Crown.

The dark recesses of my mind? YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT YOU’RE ASKING FOR!!!

But to be honest, I’d love to see a proper remake of star control 2.

Edit: Although in general – isn’t this the exact problem with the games industry? “New IP Please”; “Just another sequel”; “Copypasta” vs “Ohhh remake XYZ!”

Edit 2: How the hell did I just upvote MY OWN COMMENT???? How is this even possible?

It misses the feels. AND it does not hav the infinite money bug which made the start of Star Control 2 bearable, so you get upgrade ship faster. Man, what a drag, slow ship, cannot fight!

Dude – all I needed was 1 Spathi fighter and I could take on the entire Ur-Quan Fleet! (Well, almost – I beat the Sa-Matra final boss fleet with 2 Spathi’s because I lost concentration. Then the actual Sa Matra with 4 Shofixti to take out the shield … BLAZE OF GLORY!!

          • Brady miaau

            June 27, 2014 at 10:52

But to get the Spathi fighter you needed to play for a while with a very slow and annoying ship and the hated Earthling cruiser. No wonder they lost!

          • Alex Hicks

            June 27, 2014 at 10:57

Ha ha … Earthling cruiser … *snigger*. Was only good for one thing – initial battle against the weakened Ilwrathi. Then first stop is Pluto to befriend Fwiffo and that was me, mostly set. Didn’t use the big ship unless I had to.

Didn’t use the infinite money bug either.

            “Doesn’t look too badly actually”?

Pfft, philistine, it looks freaking AWESOME, and I say that having grown up on the 1984 original BBC version.

I played a little of the beta recently, and was really impressed. Just a little thing like docking your ship, and then having to land on your specific landing platform? Oh man, that brought tears of joy to my eyes.

And it’s stunningly beautiful, really something special. If they can nail down planetary landings & the 1st person “wandering around your ship & stations” aspects to the same quality as the current ship-based beta, I’ll need to win the lottery / inherit big, because I may just never leave my PC to go to work again….

Quest for Glory, not Heroes Quest. They had to change the name as it was too similar to another game called Hero Quest.

That said, I know that the creators of Quest for Glory are busy with a Kickstarter but I have no idea if it is still happening.

She looked the old hag in the eye, and calmly stated: Well “I” taught my children not to go run around in the sewers with sticks.

But I’m a crazy air/sea battle mofo, so the Stealth, Bombers and Fighters of the CORE and their warships were epic.

Well we all end up buying from steam for R150 or so and play it once.

To think about it maybe not a bad game for iOS and Android. I will drop R50 on a proper mobile version.

Don’t reboot the games, reboot the in-box manual, maps, and additional awesomeness that is now reserved for “collectors editions”. I miss the days where you crack open the box to get the manual to read while waiting for the game to install. Killzone had an awesome manual resembling a newspaper called “Vecta News Today”. This had fake adds, Character back-stories, weapon “reviews”, a call to arms to fight the Hellghast invasion and the dev. credits displayed as a list of casualties of the war.
I feel a bit like a grumpy old man saying to everyone who’d listen that back in my day we didn’t give away our hard-earned money for this digital distribution hooha, the games we bought had substance… something to hold in your hand and think:”THIS was worth it”.
