FFD: What games have been given a free pass?

FFD: What games have been given a free pass?

FFDfreepass

In last week’s FFD, somebody brought up a classic game; Altered Beast. Amongst older gamers, Altered Beast is infamous. It’s highly regarded as an arcade classic and it’s something most of us spent way too many 20c pieces on because we could turn into goddamned werewolves and flying dragons and that is awesome.  Pity the game is actually pretty terrible. I played it relatively recently, and it’s a short, broken, janky mess – yet it’s still almost universally adored. Altered Beast has been given a free pass.

What other games, old and new do you think have similarly been granted exemption from harsh critique? Three instantly come to mind, and interestingly, they were all published by Rockstar. GTA IV was universally lauded, heaped with praise. I still can’t figure it out. The game had bad controls, bad shooting, and bad melee combat. That was capped off with bland and clichéd writing and a pointless story.

Another Rockstar published game that got praise for reasons I can’t fathom is L.A Noire. Yes, it had a decent story and some of the most incredible facial capture we’ve seen in games, but it was one of the most boring games to actually play. Move around until your controller buzzes, turn some item around in your hands, interrogate somebody, repeat.

The last Rockstar one? Max Payne 3. It had sublime shooting, but a hackneyed story, unnerving visual aberrations and just wasn’t in the spirit of Max Payne at all. It was 8 hours of shooting gallery. punctuated with stuff I couldn’t care about.

Another one that was critic proof, and this is controversial stuff, is Skyrim. Though I loved the experience, it’s deemed by many to be overrated. It was critically praised despite being a broken mess upon release, and for many, had all the soul of a ginger kid. Same goes for Uncharted 3. I really feel that game was given a free pass by critics after the excellent Uncharted 2. The first half was pretty good, but by the end of it it was a repetitive and mindless corridor shooter.

That’s enough whinging from me though; what games do you think were given a free pass by the press and gamers themselves? Agree with my examples, or do you think I’m a deluded idiot who should be set on fire and has no place writing about games?

    Everything EA publishes.

    • Sith JJ

      EVERYTHING

    • konfab aka derp

Mass effect pretty much invalidates your argument.

      edit: I see. Much trolling.

  • Dutch Matrix

Hey, Skyrim was still a decent game upon release. I bought my copy on release day, got home that night and only emerged two days later. I got arrested. My fiancé called the cops when she saw a stranger wandering around the house…

  • Matewis Jubilai

GTAIV “…bad controls, bad shooting, and bad melee combat.”
Really? I didn’t experience that, but then again I played it with a mouse and keyboard 😉
Actually, even with, the melee combat was atrocious, but I thought the rest was fine.

    • oVg… what castle?

The Saboteur was better than GTAIV and Watchdogs combined.

Game starts with titties in your face

        • Rince&pop

          Always a good sign.

        • oVg… what castle?

          FRENCH TITTIES :)
Then EA had to fudge it up with a redeem code to get into the VIP area of the strip club.

          • Matewis Jubilai

Damn that’s low! I would curse and swear at EA as I gladly enter each letter of that code.

          • oVg… what castle?

Then they closed Pandemic Studios :(

      • Weanerdog

Except that no love for ATI, drivers were a mess, never figured out if they ever fixed it.

    Dark Souls 2

Seriously, this is nowhere near as great as the original but that is not even the main issue. The blatant graphical downgrade was sleazy and a dick move. I’m a HUUUUGE Souls fan, but c’mon….These okes LIE to your face, and then it’s just cool afterwards. Like eh, You don’t play Souls for the graphics. Bull crap BRAH….I never ever ever got why gamers are just fine with this false advertising…

Ni No Kuni also got a free pass. The graphics and story was AMAZING…but seriously now, the combat system was pretty dull and the pacing was extremely slow..

    • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

I hate NNK’s battle system, and the grinding…fuck, the grinding.

      • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

Have to agree, I REAAAAALLY wanted to love it. I mean, everything about it is pretty great…besides the actual gameplay lol Would’ve then rather preferred turn-based combat. The familiars themselves are pretty boring too…such a shame

        • Brenz

OMG Ni No Kuni, it got rave reviews, everyone was like “best evar!”
But it was crap Im mean cmon, nice graphics, but the rest was kinda dull, very much aimed at prepubescent kids.
          And
that fighting system, my aching heart it was so crap, so boring, think I
got half way and then said fuck this noise, im done.

          • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

Yup it was pretty mind numbingly boring…..Couldn’t handle it at all. Story was pretty good I must say…but not enough

    • oVg… what castle?

Even I managed to finish it. Never got to finish the first one thanks to a corrupt save file.
It was the level design and no teleporting that made the first game special.

      • Admiral Chief Fairburne

WTF is it with you and corrupt save files? WHAT DO YOU SAVE ON THEM???

        • oVg… what castle?

I think my old 20gig fat 360 was having issues.

    • Brenz

I dont get the hate for DS2, yes it was as good as the first, but I enjoyed it, wasnt blown away, but enjoyed.
Ok the graphic lie was a douche move, but I looked past that from the beginning, didnt want it to ruin it for me.
My main issue is the bosses unfortunately. They werent nearly as inventive or wow as DS1, it kinds felt like they just threw way too many in and in random places, just “because we are known for boss fights”, rather than place them based on logic or story. Speaking of story I really did hope for something a little more forthcoming compared to DS1, really use the lore instead of hide it.
Wait the more I talk the more I find things wrong with it, Ill stop now. :(

      • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

LOL not much hate, I love it. Good game, gameplay is so much better. But the story, bosses, music, lore, world was all pretty weak imo….I felt no connection to the world or anything in the game like I did for DS1. But it was good

        • Brenz

Yeah when I think back, I was immersed in DS1, really took in the world, for DS2 I was waiting to get immersed, but never quite got there, it was more of the challenge to finish it than the desire.

          • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

Yeah, now I think they went completely in the direction of what people think DS is about. They think it’s about dying and the difficulty, and while it is to a degree about that. DS really shone in it’s world and immersion…It’s like they completely ignored that

          • Brenz

They got lost in their own hype and forgot what drove them with the previous titles, sad story.

      • GooseZA

Yeah the big issue for me was the lack of immersion. Being able to warp from the get go never left you with the dread of being stuck in a place, like Blighttown or the Tomb of Giants for example.

        • Brenz

It did water it down a bit yeah, warping should be earned.
I remember that feeling of getting to the lower bonfire in Blighttown in the swamp, you got Chaos Witch in front of you, Blighttown behind you, totally helpless sensation, thats what was missing, that feeling of oh fuck, what now.

    • GooseZA

What? I thought DS2 looked way better (I was playing on 360). It certainly performed a hell of a lot better. DS1 was a better game but I still loved the heck out of 2.

  • eXpZA

99% of indie games. They’re terrible, but it’s just the hipster-gamer crowd that doesn’t want to appear “mainstream” that keeps them afloat.

    • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

99% …. Nowhere near that amount. Indies produce some of the best games in the industry these days

      • eXpZA

Just to spite you, I change my figure to 99.1%

        • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

99.1% of your opinions are wrong 😛

          • eXpZA

            Indeed, M’lady!

      • Matewis Jubilai

Yup, Broforce, Terraria, Starbound, World of Goo, Limbo, Kerbal Space Program, Project Zomboid, 0 AD …
too many awesome ones to count

        • Admiral Chief Fairburne

          YOU HEATHEN!!!! YOU FORGOT FTL!!!!!

          • Matewis Jubilai

I don’t include titles that still give me nightmares 😛

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

Hehehe, I take it that FTL made you it’s little bitch?

That game can make you feel like the Captain of the Enterprise the one moment, and then one or two jumps later like a damn Redshirt

          • Matewis Jubilai

            Kinda yeah 😀
Although I did manage to reach the end-boss once, only to get decimated during its second phase. Apart from that, I got reallly far behind in my work when I discovered it the first time – which is the main reason why I am too afraid to go back 😛

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            LOL

        • frikkenator

Add to that FTL, Braid and Papers Please.

          • Matewis Jubilai

            What’s ‘Papers’ ?

          • frikkenator

Fine, let me try that again. Add to that FTL, Braid and “Papers, Please”, please.

          • Matewis Jubilai

Hehe yeah I know 😉 Perhaps I’ll check it out on gog on of these days. On the face of it I can’t understand its appeal, so I’ll have to play it see what all the hubub is about

          • frikkenator

Lol, it looks like shit, and after playing it through 4 times I still don’t understand its appeal, but for some reason it really is quite awesome. And not in the “I like 8bit graphics” hipster kind of way.

          • Skyblue

What about Super Meat Boy and Binding of Isaac?

    • Matthew Holliday

      agreed.
toribash and dungeon defenders are the only indie games ive enjoyed.
rest is just too cool for mainstream…

    • Sith JJ

      Wow dude. Definitely not.
      You’ve got it so wrong.
I bought so many indie games that I wasn’t even aware were indie and they turned out to be my most favoured games. A lot of these guys deserve to succeed because they bring much better concepts to the table than the apparent AAA titles do.

  • Brady miaau

    monopoly

And a whole bunch of Indie games. People rave, go made, go crazy. I do not get it

    • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

      Monopoly? lol

    • Matewis Jubilai

I hate that goddamned game!! Even with the car, even with the bloody battleship, the dice gods decide to smite me, e-v-e-r-y s-i-n-g-l-e time!!

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Let me guess, they forced you to play as the shoe? 😛

        • Thats_how_I_Troll

So they gave him the boot?

        • Matewis Jubilai

Oh no, I always grabbed the car, or the battleship, but it did nothing to appease the dice gods 😛

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

The gods of chance can be cruel. For I have never won any competition at Lags. It’s been 6 years. My tears fill the oceans.

            Damn you gods of chance!!!

  • Admiral Chief Fairburne

    CoD

    • Dutch Matrix

CoD fans and Rugby fans are one and the same:
They all go drooly mouthed when a new season starts.
They never get tired of playing/watching the same game year in and year out, what with the only thing really changing is maybe a few rules here and there.

      • Admiral Chief Fairburne

I got gatvol for the Super Rugby that keeps on changing and all the politics and kak. Haven’t watched a match in ages tbh (Although I keep mah SB up to date!)

      • Hendrik

If that is true, then it should apply to all sports. Soccer is actually the worst…billions on soccer games every year!

  • Marcel

Have to agree with Skyrim bein mentioned.

To me it was a boring “Go there, do this, come back” game. Don’t get me started on combat that sees you flailing your weapon around like a monkey…

    • Admiral Chief Fairburne

I looked past the generic combat. Skyrim was a glorious escape for me

      • ToshZA

Yeah for me it was a world I could just get lost in for a while. It had its faults, but it was still a fantastic game.

        • Admiral Chief Fairburne

I loved creating armour, levelling up (which I still think is the best levelling system I’ve ever experienced), DRINKING MEAD!!!

          • oVg… what castle?

            All those Iron daggers :)

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            ALL OF THEM 😛

Totally worth it, DRAGON ARMOUR FTW

      • Marcel

Could be that I am a bit of a Souls fanboy and judged it overly harshly. At 45 hours of Skyrim, I just ran through to get the ending as I was getting bored.

        • Admiral Chief Fairburne

I saw it as a glorious adventure, escape from reality (queue the Queen music)

          • Brady miaau

and that is what a good game is, in my ever so humble opinion

          • Spaffy

            Bohemian rhapsody?

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            😛

          • Norm

I want to ride my bicycle??

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

After you finish all 3 Mass Effect’s, yes

        • Dutch Matrix

Hang on a sec: Not to point out the obvious here, but only after 45 hours of play could you figure out it was boring?????

    • Sith JJ

I loved Skyrim. Still one of my top five. Because it just had so much going on and so much depth in terms of lore and story. Looking past the fighting there were all the crafting options and leveling up that made it so addictive.
      To me at least.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Agreed, Two Worlds 2 did the open world “Save the World” yarn better!

  • Admiral Chief Fairburne

    ANY shitty port

    • eXpZA

So most PC games then. #MasterRace

      • Admiral Chief Fairburne

A fair amount of recent games. Console have broken and dumbed down gameplay significantly

        • Dutch Matrix

Consoles kind of saved gaming for me to be honest. I got tired of having to get a damn PHD in “whatever game I was playing” before I could enjoy it.

          • Thats_how_I_Troll

Damn, guys, did not know the community could not use computers as to me it is as simple as, well most probably as simple as you find a console….

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

More people need to know about this amazing new feature PC games have, it’s called “auto-select best settings for your PC”. Removes all those confusing choices.

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            LOOOOOOOL

          • Dutch Matrix

Yeah, then when you run it, the game somehow thinks your PC can run all the workings of the bloody Starship Enterprise and selects settings way too high for your little box to handle.
Amazing feature that. You are so right.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

I know I’m right. Happens all the time.

          • Thats_how_I_Troll

            True story

          • Thats_how_I_Troll

Yeah, you cant expect games to work on a Celeron chipset… You must at least meet minimum requirements to play it on its lowest level of graphics… ;p

          • Dutch Matrix

I see your brain has turned to stone…

          • Thats_how_I_Troll

Yeah, my brain as stone will still about a 100 IQ points higher than yours… Reading your comments actually makes people loose brain power… Console yourself with that 😉

      • Rince&pop

        Boom!

    • Kensei Seraph

      You shut your whore mouth.
Dark Souls is amazing even on the PC (with fix mods).

      • Admiral Chief Fairburne

I repeat my statement, ANY SHITTY PORT! It’s no longer a shitty port if you fix it yourself

      • GooseZA

Dark Souls would be amazing on anything. I am in love with those games.

  • Norm

    Almost all the WoW expansions…?

    • GooseZA

You shut your filthy mouth! 😀

    • Matewis Jubilai

Nah the first one was awesome! and Catalyst wasn’t half-bad either. I don’t know about WotLK though, but it did add some gorgeous areas to the game.

      • Norm

I enjoyed the original & TBC. WotLK and Cataclysm just felt a bit more bleh. No idea on MoP, I stopped before that expansion.

        • Matewis Jubilai

Yup me too, but I came to the scene to late. I think it must have been a blast to play vanilla, TBC and perhaps end with WotLK.

  • ToshZA

    Every single CoD.

      Modern Warefare was pretty baller

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

It just wishes it’s single player campaign was a little bit taller?

HOLLLLLLY SHIIIIIT,OOOOOLLLLLD SCCHHHOOOOOOL! Wish I had a rabbit in a hat!

        • Matewis Jubilai

I’m going to wait another 5/7 years until I can pick up all the cod titles for dirt cheap. Then, by playing them back to back (starting with modern warfare 2) I can finally have my proper cod SP campaign.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

You might have to wait longer than that. I’ve never seen a COD game on special for less than $10 except for the very very first one.

    • Kensei Seraph

      CoD 2 was pretty good.
      Not amazing, but still good.

  • GooseZA

Every Assassin’s Creed game, LA Noire, GTA IV.

And most recently, Tomb Raider. Yes it looked pretty but good lord by then end I was SO bored and I wanted to strangle all of Lara’s friends instead of save them.

    • Brenz

      THIS!
Every Assassins Creed game, they are shite.
LA Noire was so boring, couldnt even get half way….

    • frikkenator

I enjoyed LA Noire, but then again I am quite boring. I’m so glad someone brought up AC though.

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

I found it really jarring to spend hours playing as Cole, then suddenly I’m Jack Kelso?

    • DarthZA

I enjoy the Assassin’s Creed games. I really do. Only been 2 that I didn’t enjoy right to the end of it. And Tomb Raider, in my opinion, the best adventure game from the last generation. Yes, better than Uncharted 2.

    • oVg… what castle?

A teraflop of thumbs down for not enjoying Tomb Raider, I was told by an Uncharted fan that he enjoyed Tomb Raider more.

      • GooseZA

I’m sorry I let you down.

In the beginning I was all, WOAH! This is rad! And then I realised that hunting was pointles, and was like, oh that’s a pity. Missed survival opportunity there. And then I realised that there were only 2 or 3 TINY and easy tombs in the whole game and was like, oh that’s a pity. Still the gameplay is quite fun.

And then her friends just got so super annoying and unreasonable. I mean she’s off running all over the island doing ridiculous things and they’re just holed up together being bitchy about getting stuck on the island. And I wasn’t allowed to shoot them in the face.

And after about half the game I got tired of OMG LARA IS HAVING A HARD TIME! SO MUCH PAIN! We get it. It’s a reboot, grittier etc.

For me, if I just want a game to end so I can move on it’s a not a good game. Most of my friends enjoyed it though so maybe I’m wrong.

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

Wow, just swop the gender in the 3rd paragraph & you also described Far Cry 3 haha.

          • Dutch Matrix

There was a scene delete from Far Cry 3. It went like this:
Dennis: “Jaysahn, we be havin’ problems with dem pirates over at Fookyoo Cove. Can ye be sortin them out for us mahn?”
Jason Brody: “Yeah sure. But while I am gone, can you guys maybe craft me a bigger ammo pouch? I keep running out of bullets during the fire fights. And…”
“Hey Jaysahn, wot da fuck ya tink I am? Fuck ya pouches and while you be at it, fuck yaself too…”

          • oVg… what castle?

            lol

        • oVg… what castle?

I think the second game is going to be more about Tomb Raiding now that they have got her reboot out of the way.

          • GooseZA

Let’s hope so. I was really disappointed with the first. Had really high hopes for it.

          • oVg… what castle?

They did have to catch a new target market with the very expensive re-boot. I also think they tried to copy the success of Nathan Drake and turn it more into an Action game than a platform puzzle game.

I miss those hard puzzles of the first Tomb Raider.

  • ToshZA

This one is probably going to cause divided opinions: Guild Wars 2. The only thing there is to do, once you hit lvl 80, is make more lvl 80’s. It’s just so dull, and boring. And the LW content is done in a few hours, and is mostly for those AP. It’s just. There’s so much that it lacks, hardcore content is restricted to 2 encounters, one of which is now pugged and I can pick up any random group 3 or 4 times a day and do that. The dungeons are laughable. The end-game doesn’t exist. It’s basically an over rated show and tell.

  • WhiteRock

All the latest CoD’s and Battlefield’s – soulless clones.

    • oVg… what castle?

Wolfenstein restored my faith in the filthy FPS mindfudge that we have been accoustomed to

      • WhiteRock

I agree. Was a little skeptical after what happened with Wolfenstein(after RTCW was really good), but New Order is, so far, a good return to form for FPS. I do, however, wonder if this is the Bethesda influence(good coherence, actual story, movie like cutscenes).

ps. I used to love the old story driven CoD’s, but the new ones are a crap-on-rails – I wonder how many times I “broke” the last CoD I played just by trying to do the opposite of what they tell me to…

        • oVg… what castle?

Just think what Fallout 4 will look like because Wolfenstein is basically the pre Alpha. The art direction reeked of Fallout 3.

          • WhiteRock

True – that is a good point – wonder whether we’ll be getting Doom before we get Fallout 4 though…? One a side note – I enjoyed Fall 3, but I’m a Fallout fan(starting with Fall 2, then Fall 1), I do however miss the old style of Fallout. Maybe Wasteland 2 will usher in a new era of “isometric” RPG’s.

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Agree so much with Skyrim being overrated, I enjoyed my time with it – but the fun came more from exploring the fantastic environment than actual story or gameplay. LA Noire was similar in that it had a fantastic story, but my god so boring to play.

Oh, and Final Fantasy 8 – dull as dishwater story & gameplay is tedious & repetitive before long. Fallout 3 was also pretty soulless.

    • Willem Van Wyk

Exact same time I said it

    • Admiral Chief Fairburne

Skyrim’s story is mediocre at best, but the rest I adore!

      • oVg… what castle?

The dark brotherhood story kicked the 7 shades of dragon poop out of the main quest.

        • Admiral Chief Fairburne

          Yeah, epic side quest.

That being said, some of the Fallout New Vegas DLC had brilliant stories!

    • Dutch Matrix

So you hated Skyrim but liked it nonetheless?!
      😛

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

I said overrated, not hated 😛

    • Weanerdog

Final Fantasy 10 felt like I was watching a movie, got a couple hours in and never picked it up again.

  • Willem Van Wyk

Skyrim, so many bugs and glitches, yet EVERYONE loves it

  • GooseZA

Also, and it pains me to say this as I’m a huge Gears fan, GOW Judgement. What a pile of crap.

    • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

I reckon gears 2 was given a pass too. That game kinda sucked. # was pretty awright.

      • oVg… what castle?

          They have no effect.

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

They screw up our economy, I’d say that’s a Massive Effect

          • ToshZA

            What economy?

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            The one in the toilet?

            😛

I’m gonna let that one slide… for now.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

I’ll partly agree – ME3 was not as good as I hoped it would be, and I’m not one of the original ending haters either.

    • Weanerdog

I played ME 2 straight after 1 and was blow away by how it had been dumbed down to just a shooter.

  • HvR – Still dislikes Random.or

Answer is in the question, if it only costs me 20c and has a few problems so be it. If you charge me R1000 and it is broken mess FU.

  • Mike Doutchevitch

Thief 4. Appart from the game being really dull, my autosave got corrupted when I got to chapter 6. The game didn’t cater for manual saves, and it didn’t even have a chapter select once you have compleated a chapter. There was no way I would sit through that boring experience again to get to chapter 6 again. I thought the critics were way too kind on that game.

    • Spaffy

      You played till chapter 6?

      • Mike Doutchevitch

It’s been a very slow year for games. If I had another option I wouldn’t have. I play too many games and as such I don’t have the luxury of a backlog.

  • Rince&pop

Dishonoured. I tried really hard but couldn’t muster enough enthusiasm to finish it.

    • Sk3tz0

that game was good till u unlock the teleport.. then its just kak

      • Rince&pop

Yeah, hadn’t thought about it but I agree.

We got spoilt by Bioshock Infinate

      • Rince&pop

Agreed. Amazing story. No, sorry. I think I am supposed to go like this… Day one release: It’s AMAZING! Day two: It’s still amazing! Day 20: I agree with the haters, it’s highly overrated…

    • Brenz

Bought GOTYE cos I never played it and wanted to see what the big deal was. Played for about 3 hours and I ran out of fucks to give, never played again.

      • Rince&pop

Me too. Glad I didn’t pay more then R129 for the damn thing. I tried man, I really tried…

    THIS

    • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

I don’t think so…this game was pretty much hated by the majority of fans lol

      • oVg… what castle?

Yet it sold in the millions, an gave two more sequels the green light.
        Oh Japan, you so funny.

        • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

No, but to fair, the people that bought it, didn’t know it was crap, as a FF fan you know the feeling of waiting for the next main title, so when this came out obviously millions would buy it. Look at the sales between this game and XII-2.

          • oVg… what castle?

The next Final Fantasy game will be just as over rated.
The name has far exceeded what used to be good story telling in a simple fun universe with no voice acting or 3d cameras.

    • Brenz

I thought it was pretty good actually.

      • oVg… what castle?

        pretty. Not good.
South Park has a more enjoyable RPG system.

        • Brenz

Sorry I had to see what you would say :)
But yes, I loved South Parks rpg elements, TURN BASED COMBAT FTW!!!!!!

  • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

Bioshock infinite…is it just me or was the gameplay pretty meh?

    • Dutch Matrix

Bioshock 1 was pretty meh to begin with. So I never saw the need to play BS2 or BS Infinite.

      • Admiral Chief Fairburne

Did you play System Shock 2?

        • Dutch Matrix

Sorry. Nope. I heard great things about it though

          • Admiral Chief Fairburne

            Good memories that one!

      • https://twitter.com/SaveTheQueenIX Liquid Kaz (Umar)

Hmm, Bioshock 1 for was thee best . Everything after was meh

      • Mossel

Infinite and B1 are completely different, try it. You wont be dissapointed!

    • Brenz

I enjoyed it, but it feels like it was missing something, i think the combat was kinda boring and simple, but I really got invested in the characters, so I think they did a decent job with that and the story.
They just need to make you really need and want the powers for combat and tactics, not make it optional if you give enough of a fuck to get them.

      • Mossel

On my second playthrough I played on 1999 mode and then you really need to use your vigors otherwise you will get owned!

    • Mossel

I loved the gameplay, I loved the fact that you can run around and shoot mindlessly and still get an amazing story. Besides, I played it on 1999 mode, not that easy, so you really need to use your environment to beat some enemies.

  • http://tumblr.exhibeo.com/ Axon1988

Games that require you to be online to play singleplayer. I don’t have ADSL. I don’t have a lot of buckeroos. I can live with logging into steam to play something. But things like diablo 3: no thanks.

  • Anon A Mouse

Bioshock: Infinite seems like it was given a free pass for the first few months and then rage went over 9000. I actually enjoyed it.

Borderlands for me was given a huge free pass. It became mundane after an hour or so of gameplay.

    • Eric

I also got bored with Borderlands. LOVED Bioshock Infinite. I thought it was pretty Brilliant.

Before Diablo 3 Blizzard could get away with pretty much anything(WoW breaking records every time a new expansion came out).

      Any of The Sims games.

Any Command And Conquer game that comes out.

    • Mossel

Agree with borderlands, after about 30 hours in I’m quite bored with it. So I guess it’s not that bad. Bioshock Infinite is probably my favourite game of all time to be honsost, really loved the story and reading for hours afterwards wtf just happened in the ending!

      • Anon A Mouse

I’ll gladly spend 30 hours and more in Elder Scrolls, but in Borderlands I just couldn’t muster the energy for that. It’s sort of funny because I love open world, but this wasn’t it for me.

        • Mossel

Yeah Borderlands took about 4 goes before I got into it. And only because I love fps games and I had nothing better to get my pew pew fix! But it really feels like a chore now. But my ocd is forcing me to finish it, otherwise it will bother me.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Yeah, Bioshock Infinite definitely got a free pass, until the dirty unwashed masses started to play it and the community reviews starting streaming out. I love community reviews. The truth comes from the People!

  • Sk3tz0

Dark Souls.. there I said it..

    • Brenz

Just because you lack the necessary attention span and skill level to properly get into it and actually enjoy it for what it is.

      • Sk3tz0

        that and it was shite!

        • Brenz

your idea of a good gaming session is building a house in sims with no doors and watching the sim react.
Forgive me if your opinion does not hold much weight with me.

          • Sk3tz0

forgive me if i don’t like playing a broken game like Dark Souls 😛 where the corpes of ur enemies get stuck to ur leg like a roll of toilet paper..

          • Brenz

yeah, the sticky enemies is the real reason you cant play it, not the fact you are a dirty casual gamer without the balls to take on a real challenge.

          • Sk3tz0

Casual Gaming where the money is at 😛 look at candy Crush

          • Sith JJ

Casual gaming gives me a headache.

          • Sk3tz0

oh like u never play candy crush.. haha

          • Brenz

used to when i was bored at work yes, and i never spent a cent on it.

          • Sith JJ

I stay well away from any casual games. Haven’t played Candy Crush or Farmville or any of that crap.

    • Brenz

yes, and not even because of the online story or real money auction house bullshit.
It was just a pretty average, generic, boring dungeon crawler really.

      • Rags

Yep, I still can’t get over it how many good reviews that game received when it was an average game at best when you exclude the fact that the loot and online system was completely broken(the main mechanics of an rpg lol). Only one reviewer scored it 45% which I thought was slightly generous but on the mark.

        • Brenz

makes you wonder about the pay for good reviews conspiracy.

  • Sith JJ

Damn it. Late to the party.

Max Payne was such a headache to get to work. And the multiplayer also never worked. People who bought it on Steam sale even faced issues with there not being enough serial keys for everyone.

    All MMOs

    • Sith JJ

I have only played two MMO’s, so can’t really say.
      But.
      The one I hated.
The other one I hated more.

      • konfab aka derp

The only MMO I have ever enjoyed was Old republic, but then I was playing by myself with no other human players , so I beg the question: why they didn’t just make KOTOR 3 instead.

        • Sith JJ

I think we need to speak to someone about KOTOR 3. We’ve been patient for long enough now.

          • konfab aka derp

All they need to do is take the hours of dialog that they recorded for Old Republic and rework it into a single player game with a decent engine.

That would easily pass for KOTOR 2.5 for now…

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

Bioshock Infinite, loved the story, but definitely lacked in the gameplay dept.
Same for GTA4.. it just felt, clunky after GTA3/VC/SA. Was a little disappointed that the same engine/movement went across to RDR, ALMOST ruined it for me.

also, Diablo 1 and 2 (*hides), was sooo bored.

    • Thats_how_I_Troll

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Gears of War 2 and 3… DAMNIT EPIC!!!

  • Viking Of Science

@OddSockZA:disqus , I respectfully Disagree with your thoughts on Max Payne 3. The Story and Visual effects were straight up Neo-noir, and seeing as it’s an evolution on the Max Payne formula, I think it fit’s quite well. but that’s me….

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Agreed, I thought the story was one of the strong points of Max Payne 3, and showing him as a troubled middle-aged man was perfect. Here’s a videogame character that has never really recovered from the events of the first game, and who would? It makes sense that he would sink even further into depression.

  • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

But they do notice, the key is to embrace your inner box, and remain still. One must become the box.
