Unless you’re swimming in expendable income, it’s impossible for the average gamer to own every platform and play every great game. Whether it’s because of budgetary constraints, a lack of time, or because the damned games or their systems weren’t released locally – there has to be a bunch of games that you really wished you could play, but couldn’t.

for me, that would essentially be all of the great games released on the Saturn, like Panzer Dragoon Saga, NiGHTS in to Dreams, Astal and Burning Rangers. I also never got to play the sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross on the PlayStation – because the game never got a European release. and of course, there was pretty much everything on the Neo Geo, because the thing cost $600 back in the 90’s – so that was just always an unattainable thing.

If we go further back, as a a kid, when I used to flip through comic books I always saw adverts for games I really wished I could play. In the mid eighties, this was was probably the biggest one. This advert taunted me from the back of just about every single comic book I picked up.hemanad

Yes, I was a huge He-Man fan, and no I never got to play the game (probably for the best, because by all accounts it was complete crap). So what games (new and old!) have just been outside of your reach, that you’ve longingly wished you could play?

While not outside my reach (I lived it while living in China for 4 years) Eve Online is now out of my reach due to real life. I frigging loved the game and have yet to find one that can make you want to stay up till 4am (up at 6) exploring and learning. Man, what a soul stealer!

It was HUGE! It literally is a whole universe. Which can be very intimidating. I’d take @Valshen:disqus offer at help 🙂 Though be warned. It is NOT a pick up and play kind of game. It will take years of time to get anywhere which to me was the appeal. I believe they are now fusing that universe with Rust? Or some such thing…

yeah, it is massive, and apparently they haven’t explored the whole universe yet 0.o

someone checked and to learn all the skills will take years, many years.

i started a trial and it’s so in depth and interesting that it grabbed me, but i still can’t afford it, or make enough in game cash to pay for time during the trial… which is possible (i’ve seen it done).

Yeah. It takes years, and they keep adding to the skill tree so technically you cannot max your character out. I think it’s the most ‘life like’ game out there, as in, you keep developing and learning. I don’t know if you heard about a recent battle in Eve. Some guy accidently warped into an enemies area, meaning he was blown to pieces. His entire alliance’s fleet were then signalled and they warped in to avenge him. We are talking like thousands of ships, include a stack of Titans, that were destroyed in like 20 minutes. Ships that took YEARS to mine for. I think this is the right youtube link, it was HECTIC. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLqb-m1ZZUA

that’s nuts, and i heard about that, there were approx 10 thousand ships, and something like a total of 4-8 years of mining and ship building was lost in that battle. all approximations, but crazy none the less.

Dust …. dust 514 to be exact and the fuse is very limited at this point. Also there has been a corporation (read guild) since start of eve that trains new players called eve university. They helped me get into the game years back and they even hold “lectures”. Then of course you can join the two za chat channels and ask for help there as well. As for the game time I achieved paying for it in game after about 8 months of hard core mining development. ( can be done faster but it depends on market trends etc.) The proudest moment though is a couple of years down the line when you fly such a specialized ship with only the best equipment with maximum training to be able to go into null/w-space solo and survive for almost an hour 😛

I recently started playing again after spinning out in 2008. It’s a lot more accessible, but stil requires a group of friends to experience the game properly. I’m enjoying it still a month after resubbing, playing very casually. I’m doing the tutorial missions they introduced a few years back. If I don’t find people to play with (casually), I may just end up putting it back down again. But having an EVE sub is great. I love how non-invasive it is, and there’s always a sense of progression even if you don’t have a clear long-term goal, or play very actively.

Yes. Just a note. It has a few minor bugs and is incomplete. In its current form the game ends just before you enter xen (or was it zen, I can’t remember). Still well worth playing and hella fun.

I think that was a deliberate design choice on their part. A lot of people felt the zen segment was a jarring departure from the rest of the game. They probably felt that ending it where they did was enough to bridge into HL2.

          • Kromas

            May 31, 2013 at 18:42

Actually no. Zen is currently being worked on. (Definition of currently for them is about 7 years) They just wanted to release it asap on greenlight but the way greenlight screws people over im fairly certain the game is not availible on steam yet anyways.

I would have liked to play Uncharted or some more Gears of War, but I don’t gaze longingly & feel like I’ve missed out. I could buy a console, I just don’t want too. So it’s more a matter of, “Damn, oh well, move on.”

I did play quite a few of the Larry’s so I left those off the list. The mokey Island games were also good – but maybe that’s because I like pirates – insert Admiral Chief’s usual pirate ARRRRRR! here 🙂

Good selection, throw in the original Metal Gear games and Ninja Gaiden of the same era for me.

Join the Club. And MGS 4 kicked ass. Buddy enjoyed the crap outta it, He actually bought the ps3 just for that and uncharted…and God of War. Sucks never played any of those

MGS4 was a swan song to Solid Snake. I love Big Boss, but Snake is my man. I will miss the old fart.
MGS4 was so worth experiencing, I’m glad to see it on this list. It was a love letter to the fans and resolved everything properly without treading too far into fanservice territory. It is 40% cutscene, but that was something I liked about it also. How else could you focus on Snake’s story so completely? Thanks for suggesting it, I hope you get to borrow a PS3 to play it someday. Or maybe even watch someone playing it through the PS4’s streaming feature? *subtle marketing attempt*

Give it a year or two, PS3’s will be selling for sub R2000 new, and even less
            secondhand. Or… don’t be a loner and find a friend with a PS3, lol.

I’m gonna get Ps4 just blows no backwards compatability. Alas Snake I shall never get too see…. unless I find a ps3 for free…

            May 31, 2013 at 12:47

They said backwards compatibility will come through streaming – it will take a long time for them to implement it. If the demand still deems it worthwhile, then I wouldn’t be surprised to see a PS3 remote play feature in the next 2-3 years.

I mean sure fable was cool but got old. Peter Molneux was a god at making games, now he is doing indie I believe?

You obviously didn’t hear about the Curiosity Cube ending. He’s still ponce-ing about. Peter Molyneux is still, assuredly, up to his old tricks. He is making an indie title called Godus next that seems to have elements of his earlier games in it.

My best Fable moment was unintentional – I started sprinting from the docks towards the city, spotted a chicken in my way, gave him one almighty kick, he went flying over the city wall until he was just a tiny speck in the sky… then the game crashed with an out-of-bounds error. I nearly died laughing.

Man of man I seen some weird shit in those games. Fable 3 was holding some chicks hand and wolfs came and boom she was gone! meanwhile the game thought she was still the strolling along holding nothing! or fable 2 in the crusable(excuse my spelling) had those hobbes blow up and flipping hit walls like at warp speed, kept bouncing and xbox froze. Hell lately I played Hitman Obsolution and right at the end xbox froze I mean wtf!

Only because it never got released in SA at the time but Final Fantasy 9. I was yearning for that game, like how a chick yearns for a dude who’d play games in the kitchen #cheapshotfridays

I never got to play Twilight Princess as the Gamecube version wasn’t released here. I have been looking for it, but it’s quite expensive to import and nobody seems to have a PAL copy. : (

At a time I really wanted Jurassic Park on Mega Drive, I eventually got to play it and it wasn’t as cool as I remember from the gameplay I saw on KTV.
