FFD: How stupid are our top 100 games of the generation?

FFD20122013

If you’ve been following, we’ve been posting lists of what we’ve established to be the top 100 games of this generation. They’re the games we found to be entertaining, insightful, enlightening or just plain different.

It was put together using the magic of spreadsheets and maths and votes from staff, including those from people with absolutely no taste in games. Yes, Victor, I’m looking at you. so yes, there are some significant stupids that have crept in – some position might be a bit silly, and Dragon Age 2 has no place being on any best list of anything.

If you haven’t already, check it out, Lazygamer Top 100 games of this generation.

Let it all out. Tell us how stupid you think our best games of the generation are. Just wait until you see the top 10.

And perhaps worse, our games of the year.

I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

Don't stop now.... you're having a good time

  • Weanerdog

The fact that you are keeping it under wraps until you are all on holiday makes me very nervous.

    • Jonah Cash

Good point!! They will draw this on us for the number 1…….

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

lol all the posts are done, we just wanted to keep something going up for the poor bastards who aren’t going on leave… like me :(

      • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

And me… I got no leave… at least I’ll have one post to read per day lol

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Don’t worry dude. I’ll be here too.

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Shut up Geoff, DA2 was good!

I’m really enjoying the list, it’s reminding me of all the great games I’ve played & the ones I’m still looking forward to playing. I’m not paying attention to the rankings, they’re pretty arbitrary – I just see it as a list of this generations most beloved games.

    • Christopher

Down vote. Try mention DA2 and good in the same sentence again ;)

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

hehe. It was damn it. The characters were cool.

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Sorry, but I also have to disagree. I enjoyed DA 1, but about twenty minutes into DA2 I was so bored, quit, uninstalled. Felt generic.

          • Christopher

DA 1 was the balls. It rocked

          • Umar of The Rebellion

            *chocolate salty balls !

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

You don’t have to agree with me, but I don’t understand why people would choose to be wrong. ;P

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

            Touche’

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

First 2 hours of DA2 was quite the bore fest

        • Willem Swanepoel

I loved Anders, the cry baby little bitch. The gay elf with Mage issues. The annoying brother who bitches about mages all the time. I found Isabela a lot more interesting because SHE GOT BOOBIES …

The Prince was really cool … who else was there… nah they were not that important anyway ….

          I cannot wait for DA3.

DA2 was AWESOME! and DA;O was EPPPPIICCCC

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Varrick? (the dwarf) was a good unreliable narrator.

  • Jonah Cash

Hahahaha!! I only played 2 of the games on the 60-51 list…….. Makes me wonder what I had missed out on!!!

  • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I agree with the games on the list actually, I just feel like it had been shaken up and some games ended up on the wrong spots.
The list did actually draw my attention to some games I didn’t even know existed, some of which are now on my Steam wishlist.

  • Umar of The Rebellion

    http://www.quickmeme.com/img/68/68a685255348097e81a4460393f7c18743fe72cb83482906300d539d7e92e5e1.jpg

Hehe just kidding. But what I wana know. How serious is this list though, for DA2 to beat some other games, it’s absolutely Ludacris (in every area code) ….

DmC beat DMC 4 ? …. Combi Christ’s soundtrack alone qualifies that game to be thrown in the bin….I can get behind some of it…

But how is fancy pants adventure better than Prey? Makes me wana pop cap in this shindig!…Binary Domain beat Far Cry 3….The Universe is falling apart…..

SO HELP ME ODIN , If I see Candy Crush on this list I will destroy everything….

    • Hammersteyn

      I’ll be your right hand

    • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I was outvoted with Candy Crush.. remember a game higher up doesn’t mean the game is actually better.. just that it did something special that it deserves to be remembered for

      • Umar of The Rebellion

So the position doesn’t mean anything?

Also…how dare you try to include that game :P

        • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I have spent more time on Candy Crush than anything..

And no the position matters.. but just because something is higher doesnt’ mean it’s a better game.. it just means we think it was a more important game to the industry.. it brough something special to it

          • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

I don’t think people have caught onto that yet Gavin… no matter how much that disclaimer is there.

          • Umar of The Rebellion

Ahh oki true. But I think that’s the general thinking, or maybe it’s just me, when you see something higher on the list you would think it’s better…Still DA2 was important? lol

And understand about Candy Crush….gaming drug

          • http://www.lazygamer.net Gavin Mannion

I didn’t vote for DA2… washing my hands of that one :)

          • Umar of The Rebellion

Lol no, Lagz is your baby, and DA2 will forever loom over YOUR head. For shame :P

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            Isn’t democracy fun :P

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Goood gooodd! Those responsible need to be paraded in front of the Banana Gaming Tribunal! :P

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I personally wouldn’t turn my back on a banana.

          • Ultimo_Cleric N7

            good man

      • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

I would have added a vote for Candy Crush… why you ask? Well, because, addiction… that’s why

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Then snake should have been on a gaming list sometime back when that was out on phones.

          • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

I mastered that back on my 5110 and 3310

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I just think that if games such as those can be listed between games like Dragon Age and DMC then everyone in the world is a gamer.

          • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

You have to remember Snake was like 2 generations back… it’s not a “last” generation game.

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I just mean, I don’t think it’s really fair to put games like Candy Crush on this list.

          • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

Yeah, I think mobile (phone) and Facebook games shouldn’t be allowed… 3DS, 2DS, Vita, etc games are fine :P

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

Pfff. They better put cookie clicker as #1

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

            3210 for me

      • Hammersteyn

        Like microtransactions :P

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

Does that mean Alien Colonial Marines will be no.1? That’s a pretty special & memorable game… for all the wrong reason. heh

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Dragon Age 2 was pretty special…. for all the wrong reasons

  • Christopher

To be fair, the list is filled with some good games. Some I have never even heard of, but in general quite enjoying your list. As they say, one man’s DA2 is another man’s soul destroying hell of an abyss… that there is no escape from.

  • CodeName Tailgunner

I can see that the math goes something like this.

    everyone votes

Whatever Zoe says gets multiplied by 0.1 cuz she’s a girl

Whatever Gavin says gets multiplied by 10 cuz he’s the boss (TONY DANZA)

Add whatever Geoff and Darryn says

Activate the improbability drive and wait to recover.

And Voila we have the lazy gamer top 100 games of this generation.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

I think that’s where the mistake comes in. You don’t add a Darryn, you subtract.

      • CodeName Tailgunner

Probably why their list is slightly off.

They tried to divide by Darryn.

        And the thing broke

        • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

          That’s because you can’t divide by 0

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            DOUBLE BOOM!

      • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

        Just don’t multiply.

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

          BOOM!

      • Sageville

…and we know Victor just put a 100 votes into Fable….

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

          Victaaaawr?

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

            VEEKTAAAWWWRRR

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Yours is so much better. I can actually hear it.

          • Admiral Chief in Vegas

            (Inside Lagz office)

Geoff: “Why is the coffee gone? VEEEKTAAAWWWRRR”

          • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

            Veeeeeecky

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Mmm.. I think you when you multiply and add with a Darryn the result is always zero, although you should never divide anything with a Darryn… that simple act could kill Mathematics all together.

        • CodeName Tailgunner

Error: Could not compile: Division by Darryn.

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

            #DIV/DARRYN!

  • Hammersteyn

It’s been a mixed bag so far and people are getting worked already and we haven’t even broken the fifties. I can guarantee the top 10 will piss a lot of people off because you can’t please everyone.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Eyeballs are going to be very salty! And the problem is, folks take gaming very personally… :o

  • AndriyP

Oh boy…i just have to see the games of the year THIS year

    • Admiral Chief in Vegas

      Wow, YOU actually commented?

      Nice!

    • Hammersteyn

Besterest shooter COD because Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon,Metro: Last Light and
BioShock Infinite isn’t technically a shooter.

      • AndriyP

Definition of shooting game these days:
        Designed for multilayer
Designed to make money off DLC

Story, innovation just doesn’t cut it

        • Hammersteyn

          Sad state of affairs

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

DUDE!! WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN?

      • AndriyP

I have taken an extended leave of absence from LG am back to see if i shall stay, will just have to wait and see that the games the year titles will be, if its anything codilicious like last year im extending my leave further

Glad to see i was missed a little :P

      • AndriyP

Hmm do comments disappear often on the site? Or is there a new mod rule?

        • http://www.twitter.com/WobblyOnion Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

          Nope! Disqus be weird, yo!

          • AndriyP

Dont…do that…im busy watching Naruto Shippuden and Killer Bee annoys the crap out of me….yo

        • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Yeah, I’ve noticed a little bit of lag on some of my posts. Some of them only appear hours later.

          • AndriyP

Yeah but my comments seem to go missing…as in i typed something 3 times now and its gone after a few minutes…strange…

      • AndriyP

Anyways…as i said earlier, ive been taking a leave of absence from LG but might be back, depending on how the games of the year list will play out…if its something codelicious like last year i might extend my leave leave

    • HvR

I think they are going to make Vicky work New years Eve and have him post it at 23:59.

  • Admiral Chief in Vegas

Lagz peeps are a bunch of silly sausages

    • AndriyP

        Admiral Chief Wors*

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

          Admiral Chief Sausage Fest :/

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

            Haha.

          • AndriyP

            That escalated quickly…

          • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

            That’s what she said

          • Willem Swanepoel

Admiral Chief Sausage With Cream Cheese Inside On a Braai Squirting Fest

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

and people say I escalated things quickly lol

          • HvR

            Cream cheese reminds me of

          • Willem Swanepoel

            Hahahhaha hahaha ;)

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            Wow…

      • Admiral Chief in Vegas

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Check the remix dude…just found it

          • Umar of The Rebellion

            Holy shit….that sounds really good…..

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Much better. I’m not a pop fan in the teeniest tiniest way, but this gets my seal of approval.

          • HvR

It is a Autotune Jesus miracle

  • Sageville

We are biding our time, till we see the top 10…. if COD is there….

    http://www.nationalledger.com/artman/uploads/mr_burns.jpg

    • Umar of The Rebellion

Thing is…CoD MW was actually a really great game and deserves to be high on the list. It was a very influential shooter

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

Yes, I like to make fun of it but I won’t deny it’s had a major impact.

        • Umar of The Rebellion

Yup Yup. I can’t justify all the sequels really, but when MW was released it really changed the MP shooter scene and the SP was really memorable too

      • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I agree. Spent many hours on CoD MW. Even more after all those mods they had.

        • Umar of The Rebellion

Yup it was a really good game. AS much as we make fun of it, it got big for a reason

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Think I replayed the SP three times. They just did things right, gave the people what they wanted. Those days are sadly gone.

          • Umar of The Rebellion

Yup once they saw it was becoming really lucrative it became nothing mooo than a cash cow

          • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

            Nice

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

COD4 was a good game, and it definitely deserves it’s spot on the top 100. As for everything that comes after…. let’s just say, you wouldn’t want to sully your toilet bowl with them.

      • Sageville

Agreed, I just hope the list isn’t based on reported Sales figures…

  • Sir Rants A Lot Llew. Jelly!!!

I’m actually enjoying seeing the top 100 list each day. It gives us some real insight in to some of the taste of games from the staff.

Can’t wait to see the top 10 although your closing comments have frightened me a little.

  • HvR

The problem is that you guys didn’t consult Chuck Norris. BUt you are not alone JCVD also made that mistake recently.

    • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

In all honesty. I do think that Van Damme video is pretty damn cool.

  • Willem Swanepoel

I expect Farmville 2 to be in the Top 10 a long with CoD Blops2 and Skyrim ;)

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

      Yeah…. that’s why I’m self-medicating with some Guinness.

      • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

Guinness. You bastard. And here I am, sitting at my desk, working.

  • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

I actually just hope that no Facebook and Mobile (phone) games end up on your list… I know Gavin and Zoe are addicted to Candy Crush… but I don’t see the point of having those games on a list like that

    • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

      Thank you. Agreed.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I suppose once you go full-retard, you might as well embrace it and go for broke. If Fable 3 and Aliens: Colonial Marines aren’t in the top 10 game of this generation list, then we riot.

But seriously though, I wish Dragon’s Dogma gets a nod. If there was ever a game that deserves a spot in any top 100 it’s that one. Same with Spec Ops: The Line, Demon Souls, Dark Souls, Ni No Kuni, MCOM: Enemy Unknown, Last of Us, Uncharted 1, 2, Tearaway and Terraria. Those are the games I would take into my bunker.

  • Ultimo_Cleric N7

DA 2 above Arkham City was an issue for me. As was DA 2 being on the list at all. Also a bit suprised Arkham Asylum was so low on the list. Also, as much as I dislike the Halo franchise, I think it should have been a bit higher as they have been pretty influential (depending on who you ask).

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I don’t think the Halo’s should have been lumped like that. Instead, they should each have had their run for the title.

      • Ultimo_Cleric N7

Agreed. While the core series was not my favourite, Halo: Reach is still one of the best games I have ever played. Dat storyline……

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

The only other issue I have so far is why some games are lumped into franchises and others are not. I think that’s very unfair, especially when you might have a title that was above-average, and now it gets lumped together with its under-performing brethren. Take Gears of War for instance, Gears of War 1 was exceptional, but it’s sequels were not. Infamous is another example, the first game while OK, pales in comparison to the second. There are plenty other examples… and since this is TOP 100 GAMES of the generation rather than Top 100 FRANCHISES… I really think the ball has been dropped.

Also, why didn’t you get the community to vote for this? We could have made submissions from August already and then you would have got an idea of how the peanut gallery sees gaming.

    • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

I also noticed how some franchises were bunched together and others not. Seems like a waste of spots on the top 100, or just don’t include entire franchises as you say. Each game is its own.

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Or if you do lump them, then be consistent right through, so every franchise game is lumped not just some. But then you bring up another issue, how do you then weigh a franchise against a single title? Do you mentally average them? So if UC1 and UC2 were great but UC3 was a little hit and miss, therefore the whole franchise scores below Dragon Age 2? Fuuuuucckkkk!!! FUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!

And more importantly why wasn’t Dragon Age lumped as a franchise?

        • JJ’s horrible secret (John)

It’s a bit of a loophole, I’ll agree. Every game for itself. You can’t bundle up the Elder Scrolls series and neither can you the Fallout series. Or Warhammer series. Imagine that. Not that I expect any Warhammer game to fall on a list here.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Exactly, if Dragon Age 2, Dragon Age: Origin, Oblivion and Skyrim can run individually, why can’t Resistance 1, 2, 3 or Infamous, 1, 2 or Halo 3, ODST, Reach, 4, or Saints Row 1, 2, 3, 4?

          • Her Highness the Hipster

there was actual method in our franchise madness. if the same story was carried through, it was lumped together. if the sequel was in the same universe but did not carry on with the original story, it was separate. also, if only one game from an entire franchise was worth mentioning, it stood alone :)

          • Falcon D. Stormvoice

To be fair, TES goes back multiple generations.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Ugh.. Fable 2 or 3.. if either one of you are in the top 50, I’m probably going to pop a vein….

    • Lego Witcher of the Squirrels

Would someone please ensure that there is a medic, four people in white coats, a padded cell and a straight jacket available for Jim in the next few days?

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

I hope everything will be ready for the fallout of my imminent mental breakdown? I’d just like to make one suggestion, when you wrestle me to the ground to put the straight jacket on, please don’t kidney shot me. Oh and I would like a pine odour in my padded cell. I like pine.

  • SaintsRowNigri

If you had called this the 100 Best Games In No Particular Order We Could Come Up With Whilst Being Drunk it would have made for a better read. But you lost all credibility when Arkham City scored lower than DA 2.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

lol, Random musings at the Office Party: Our Drunken Top 100 list! With pictures of Geoff and Gavin in Borat mankinis.

  • JustAnotherGamer

Jissus guys your top 100 has been shocking.

  • Brian Murphy

Hrm, I understand what you want out of this article, but I’m just not going to criticize your choices. I have different ones, sure, but that doesn’t make me right and you wrong…just different tastes/benchmarks.

  • Brian Murphy

The only thing I would say is ‘stupid’ about them, is leaving out PC Games like Arma and Stalker. I don’t care if the site started as a console site. These are two IP that everyone should know about, and respect. Besides, if you’re not throwing PC Games in, it’s a top 100 console games list. Not all games.

Beyond, I applaud anyone who takes the time to try and actually put numbers to their top 100 games, regardless of whether I approve or disprove with any of them.

  • Falcon D. Stormvoice

Does Dragon Age II have a place in the list of best games? No, definitely not.

Was it buggy and preposterously lazy, yes? Was it far too short in comparison to the previous title? Yes. Was the battle system a move down from thoughtful and strategic to juggling button cooldowns and watching whacky anime fighting? Well, yes. Rushed to market? Yep, that too.

But, it did have good points. Kirkwall itself would have been a good starting point for a bigger game. Moving forward through time rather than moving across distance was a creative way to design the game. Varric was a good unreliable narrator, the characters, while not for everybody’s tastes, were actually rather good. The choices did matter when the game wasn’t glitching, and it was great fun to make repeat playthroughs to see what else would happen at the end if you made subtle changes. Despite the copy-paste armor and weapons, it was at the core a good RPG with everything we love about RPGs. The add-ons were also sizeable and interesting.

So, despite an enjoyable underlying experience, maybe… 6/10. You just shouldn’t be allowed to get away with using the same exact dungeon a hundred times with different doors open and an odd piece of decoration here and there.
