Expect smarter and weirder behaviour in The Sims 4

The Sims 4

Confession: I kind of dig The Sims. But for all the wrong reasons. While I give little to no fraks about all those various expansions for fashionable clothing, what I do enjoy doing is using that game to create nightmare scenarios with the little digital people inside my PC. Like creating a pyrophobic glutton and then surrounding his fridge with several fireplaces. Anyway, new trailer!

Love or hate the virtual creations, but these little buggers sell well for EA. This year’s latest instalment features moodier gameplay, with your chosen Sim having an effect on the folks around him based on his current emotional state. So kind of similar to the effect I have on folks when I run around in my underwear and Batman mask.

I’ve already got plans for this game. It’s supposed to have a newer and more in-depth character creator, and I will most likely end up using it to create emotionally fragile Sims who are broken inside and have no idea how to vent their frustrations. Which is a step up for me, because way back in the first Sims game, I’d usually just create a small cupboard in the house of a Sim, lure them in and then brick them up.

And then they’d be stuck there, soiling and starving themselves to death and oh this is sounding rather horrible now that I think about it. Erm, I might need help. Tell you what, I’ll create a Sim version of myself and see how that goes. Game is out in September.

  1. Looking at the “make it bigger” under the video, and then looking at the video… I think that’s exactly what he’s doing. Is that the smarter or the weirder behaviour?

EA has done the impossible, they’ve drowned my excitement for this game in a Pool of DLC!! (Damnit Grandpa Moore)

Sims was always the original DLC king.

The first and second series had expansion packs that were vastly different from the base game. They added new content to an already full experience, and to Maxis’ defense it wasn’t DLC. The third game things started to change though, especially with the expansion of the Sims Store (via EA). That’s really where things started to get out of hand (from a DLC perspective). Remember for Sims 1 and 2, you were actively encouraged to mod, and you had huge communities that would provide content. That fell away for Sims 3 and most definitely won’t be around for Sims Meh Fawr.

Personally, I see no reason to upgrade from Sims 3.

The way I see at least 50% of the expansions is thus: 30/40 new items plus one activity or one small addition, for the full price of the base game. Times that by what, 15/20? It’s nuts. Basically for a full collection you’d need to spend more than an PS3’s full price. And you’d have money left over to buy a few games.

It’s definitely nuts, you’re looking at an insane investment, and it’s bound to get worse for the Sims 4, because of the Sims Store and the fact that the base game is already bare-bones (oh wait.. the sims have emotion now.. hahahah.. hahahah… groan).

I got Sims 1 with all the expansions for under R500 (they were on sale). And I did the same with Sims 2 as well (which is arguably the best Sims game ever made). I liked the open world nature of Sims 3, but to be honest, I haven’t really been that invested in it.

Well the Sims Store doesn’t seem to be moving to the Sims 4 – from their FAQ. “SimPoints will not be supported by The Sims 4, but will continue to be a form of payment for The Sims 3 content in The Sims 3 Store.”

Still, those deals you got were good, but the new features (coming from like 7/8 years of not playing Sims) makes me want this. I’ll get the base game, but probably none of the overpriced boxed expansions – that never drop in price during that iteration of Sims.

Towards the end of SIms 2, they unveiled the proto-version of the Sims Store (at that stage it was just a few clothing items etc. It didn’t have much of an impact, because of the huge modding community), and those points didn’t carry over to Sims 3 either. So, you’ll probably get a revamped Sims Store dedicated to Sims 4.

First time since the first game I’ve actually wanted The Sims.

The Sims 3 really impressed me with its open world etc. This doesn’t seem like they’ve done anything at all in 5 years.

The way you create your sims and houses now looks more intuitive. Remember, last one I played was Sims 1, no expansions. So this is a huge step up from that.

          Ah. Cool.

If you read the “features” for The Sims 3 and then The Sims 4, they sound almost identical. =/

If you’re coming from Sims 1, then 4 will definitely be amazing. I can only speak as a long-time Simmer, the difference between 3 and 4 isn’t that great, and you’re also loosing the open world from Sims 3, with 4 returning to pre-Sims 3 load screens. And if I compare Sims 2 to 4, the only real change is a push to softer graphics, with the overhauled building tools…

But if you’re excited, go for it bud.

Wait, they’re *taking away* the open world? What the heck, seriously, that’s what made The Sims 3 great for me. The exploration and “living world” feel to it.

Yep, open world is gone – so too are driveways and cars (coming to an Expac/DLC near you). Your town is divided into districts, so essentially it’s like Sims 2 or the PS3/xbox360 version of Sims 3.

Honest question here: what have they done in 5 years to actually call this a sequel?

They’ve removed features, and upgraded the Sims Store.

      They’ve improved the house construction.
Pity it’s wasted on a Sims game.

I honestly would love to see that be used for some kind of D&D game where 1 person creates a dungeon/castle and 4 ~ 6 people have to invade it.

Except you don’t get swimming pools in vanilla Sims 4 – It will be DLC’ed at like $19.99 the way EA usually does.

Love how EA is now using the Gay community as PR Damage Control.

Is there no low EA won’t go to secure it’s dollars?
