EA’s next Star Wars game could go open world

Star Wars may have found a home at EA, but it’s been awfully quiet over the last couple of months. There’s a galaxy far, far away that is filled with potential for new games, but EA has kept mum so far on their plans. According to one insider though, the next Star Wars game could be going open world on next-gen systems.

Star War 1313 seems to have gone the way of the dodo, but EA Canada appears to be working on an open-world, next-gen Star Wars game.

Superannuation on Kotaku spotted several job ads at EA Canada, for a project described as “A major new next-gen open world action game” that the Star Wars team was working on. Back in September, EA Canada was also looking for a combat designer to work on this game according to reports.

Rumours are that this game will be co-developed between EA Canada and Dead Space studio Visceral Games, tying into earlier reports about EA’s plans for their ten year license.

Since the Disney buyout of LucasArts, the only other Star Wars game in development has been the new Battlefront game which was briefly teased at E3 this year. But Star Wars GTA? Sweet Sith-spit, yes! EA has had a hand in several open-world games, with the Saboteur being an underappreciated favourite of mine from this generation.

Now throw in a decent planet to explore, the choice to play as either a Force user or a badass mercenary, space-ships to fly around and I will be a very happy Ewok. Plus, it’d help me get over the pain of losing Star Wars 1313.

But EA are involved, so for each force power or gun up grade you will have to do a micro transaction or buy over priced ‘DLC’

I’m thinking basically a Skyrim/Fallout style game, but wrapped in the Star Wars universe. That could be absolutely incredible, choices determine whether you become a Sith or a Jedi… But, I think the keyword there is could. Disney should’ve licensed it to GSC, and had them make it.

oh yes! If dreams could come true: mix kotor with mass effect and eve/freelancer, increase the size of the areas you can explore per planet, have 100’s of planets available in the galaxy and we may have one of the best game ever taking only 10TB of HDD space

Please, if there is a god, he would NOT let EA publish a star wars game. Amped for the idea though, knowing EA it’s not going to be a smooth game. Expect bugs & crashes etc. so while the idea sounds great, the game wont be. That’s like knowing you can have that beer, only it’s warm.
