Xbox One Revealed

EA isn’t exactly known for being the most kind or giving publisher out there. They make some great games, but they’ve also been behind some of the worst trends in the industry. Things like season passes and day one DLC packages used to (and in some cases still are) be part of EA’s business ethos. But what happens when EA genuinely tries to do something good, even for a few people?

EA Access happens. Last night, out of nowhere, EA revealed a new subscription service for Xbox One that feels almost like a gaming Netflix. Or PS Plus, except a bit better in some cases. The subscription will cost $4.99 on a month to month basis, while a full year up front will set you back $29.99. So what does EA Access have to offer? Well, quite a lot actually.

Being a subscriber gives you access to EA’s Vault. The Vault is where EA will store games that subscribers can download for free. Unlike PS Plus, games don’t have a time limit on them, so the Vault will just continually grow over time as EA add to it. There are already four games on offer, including FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4. That’s a lot of value for the first batch of titles.

Being a subscriber also gives you access to some neat perks regarding EA titles. You’ll net yourself a 10% discount on all EA titles as a subscriber, and also get the chance to try out titles up to a week before they release. You don’t even need to have a pre—order locked in at this point. You can play and carry your save over should you choose to buy it on release day. Again, at a discount.

This sounds like a lot of value for a $29.99 annual subscription, and I can see this really taking off with sports games fans. Instead of buying each annual title at full price, you can now wait a few months and get all of them anyway for half the price of a single game. That, aside from all the discount goodness, starts making the decision between an Xbox One and PS4 a little trickier, and I bet a lot of casual sports gamers will now see the Xbox One as the better option.

It’s another great deal in this power relationship that EA and Microsoft have going. EA Access is already available to some users in beta, and will launch later this year in America and Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

  1. That sound like a decent plan. Does it include the DLC for those titles though?

It will never include the DLC. EA and Bio are selling all the Mass Effect 2 DLC at full price. They fuck you with the DLC every time.

Firstly , conceptually, it’s similar to PS plus, but PS plus offers a wide variety of games and yes you only have the games till your subscription runs out (Which apparently a lot of people seem to view as a really bad thing even when they’re getting great titles, wierd) but they’re varied and diverse titles. This service offers you EA games…..Is there that much appeal to these games to buy into this service? Will most sport fans even wait MONTHS for the games? Sports fans will either get the game new because what hardcore FIFA/BF gamer wants to be behind the rest of the world by a few months, its competitive suicide. Casual sports fan will rather buy it when its cheaper or 2nd hand. They’re not gonna pay a monthly fee to get the game’s cheaper at a later stage. It’s nice, don’t get me wrong….but…..I don’t see a monthly service being such a big deal. Look at Origin, how sure are we they’re gonna handle this properly even?

I don’t see how this is as BIG as the internet is making it out to be.Not buying into this AT ALL

Everyone is always like its not free and you don’t get to keep the games….Blah blah……We’re not PC gamers that brag about our 100 game backlog….If your subscription runs out, you don’t lose the games even, if you renew it a year later it will still be there. Man it grinds me when people make PS+ out to be this kak service. They make you want to keep your subscription and thus you’ll keep your games

    A couple of things,
    1. PS+ games are yours and won’t expire unless you can’t be bothered to click the purchase for free button every month(Still it’s very silly that they remove the titles :/)
    2. So now you need to pay for XBOX Live and EAs subscription service?
    3. Does does include DLC, I’d bet it doesn’t.

At least this is one way not to pay premium for basically the same game every single year. So basically EA is doing the right thing by pretending to do us a favor. Well for XBOX anyway.

PS+ games are not yours, it’s effectively a rental service in which you don’t get to choose your games.
EA’s subscription service is offering games that MS will not. It would be the same as paying Steam a subscription service for a few games a month.
It never includes DLC. How do you think Sony recover the costs of their *free* games on PS+. EA figured this out way before anyone else. Sell a slightly aged top title for 50 bucks and the DLC at full price to make another 600 bucks.

EDIT: I am actually considering cancelling my PS+ subscription atm as I feel that the value proposition has dropped substantially since the PS4 launched due to them spreading the love over too many formats. Xbox Live let you keep the games indefinitely which is a better proposition in my book even if it took them a while to wake up and offer occasionally decent titles.

Ok let’s get the main argument out of the way:
You are getting stuff for a monthly sub that is far lower than the total price of all the things you get. So it’s a good service. End of story. Stop demanding DLC and all other options along with it. You sound like a bloody pirate.

Ok now that, that is out of the way my view on this:

The service is cool and all but it only allows you to have EA titles. I buy maybe 1 EA title a year (if EA are lucky) and I’m not going to pay a monthly sub in the hopes that said game will MAYBE appear as a free item. It’s a bit like lottery. So for me this is pointless. However, for people who pretty much only buy EA games this service may just be worth it.

However only time will tell how good the service remains. This is EA after all. I don’t see them continuously providing latest titles free in this growing collection. I can see a year or 2 down the road that the games in the collection will be older games that have reached their sales peak and are no longer selling anymore. But that’s just because I’m synical about anything EA. Who knows. I may be wrong?

That all being said. EA are taking a massive chance with allowing you to pre-play a game before launch. If the game is terrible (Like what happened with BF4) they will lose all their sales as people won’t buy a crap product. So maybe this will force EA to reconsider how polished their titles should be before launch.

i think the more interesting question will be how long the wait is between release date and availability on this rental service.

I know loads of people who pretty much just play FIFA, so this would be great for them, if they don’t have to wait too long to get it.

BF4 already has it’s first DLC so they can time the games to be offered on EA Access as soon as the DLC hits to cover their asses/profits.

You also made me LOL when I read this as morons were still queuing up at midnight launches for that broken game and EA still don’t give a shit:

” EA are taking a massive chance with allowing you to pre-play a game before launch. If the game is terrible (Like what happened with BF4) they will lose all their sales as people won’t buy a crap product. So maybe this will force EA to reconsider how polished their titles should be before launch.”

“behind some of the worst trends in the industry”- The worst trend in the history of the industry is “Free to Play”. If it wasn’t for all these “trends” they’d probably also been bankrupt by now! EA is one of the few developers keeping head above water and actually able to offer this type of service to new consoles due to their number of titles available! I have BF4 and FIFA 14 already, but for the price of one game I can get Madden NFL 25 & Peggle 2 and that’s only just in the Beta? If you’re a gamer and can do maths, this is a great deal! Where can I sign up please?

Theoretically, you should just have to sign up for one month, grab the 4 games on offer then only sign up once every 6 months to grab what’s on offer at that time. I can’t see EA offering a new game or 2 every month as their library isn’t big enough for that.
Have fun with Madden *cough* and Peggle is just plain kak btw. EA gave me the first Peggle for free and I still only played it for 10 minutes.

It is a step in the right direction for EA after milking us for all these years.

Yeah it is a good service for Xbox One owners… There is a flip side however which I haven’t seen too many people bring up yet! For myself I feel left out by this owning a PS4, I haven’t had too many good things to say about Fifa 14 over the last year and was actually thinking of not buying 15 on release day(First time in 10 years that won’t happen). But now with this it feels like EA has gone the same way as what MS did when they started to promote the ONE by selling it to everyone except gamers…. I can see in the stats that, that little stunt didn’t have a very good impact on the ONE’s sales!! Now EA is pretty much saying to PS4(include PS3 and Xbox 360) players screw you, you can buy Fifa for full retail price and in 6 months(This is how long I think they will take to load the new ones on the vault) we will give it to the ONE owners as part of the yearly sub…. I don’t like it when I feel I am being screwed over, hell that is exactly the reason why I would not buy a ONE… So now my mind has been made up, I will not be buying the new Fifa on release day for the first time in 10 years and I would bet money that I am not the only one that sees it this way…
But as I said it is a great service, one which I would gladly pay for if available on the PS4!!!
