EA cancels Free to play Command and Conquer

Remember that Command and Conquer game that was teased as being the new game from RPG hitmaker Bioware? Yes, the one that was originally supposed to be Generals 2 – then became a free to play RTS under the helm of the newly renamed Victory Games? Well, you may as well forget about it, because it’s been cancelled.

EA confirmed the games’ cancellation in a blog post.

Part of being in a creative team is the understanding that not all of your choices are going to work out. In this case, we shifted the game away from campaign mode and built an economy-based, multiplayer experience.

Your feedback from the alpha trial is clear: We are not making the game you want to play. That is why, after much difficult deliberation, we have decided to cease production of this version of the game. Although we deeply respect the great work done by our talented team, ultimately it’s about getting you the game you expect and deserve.

It’s odd; EA was pushing the game really hard at E3 and Gamescom this year – even trying to shoehorn the thing in to its Gamescom presentation by trying to show it off as some sort of really competitive eSport title by forcing us to watch a live on-stage 1v1 match between random dudes.

Well, they’re not pushing it anymore; it’s pretty clear people weren’t happy about the campaign-less, free-to-play, pay-to-win thing. Unfortunately, this sort of thing doesn’t come without casualties; it’s been reported that Victory Games has been shut down entirely.

They’ll now be using the assets and information they’ve got so far to make a new Command and Conquer game – though I’m not sure anyone really cares anymore.

Honestly, I used to love the Command and Conquer franchise back when it was in Westwood’s hands. Since acquiring that studio (and subsequently shutting it down) EA has pissed away what could have been one of the pre-eminent names in RTS gaming.

I’d much rather get the cheap Pinball FX table, I didn’t see that last night.

For anyone wondering, Deadlight is a really cool little side-scroller. It’s very short though, only spent around 4 hours – but it’s a good 4 hours.

The Only Way for EA to fix the franchise is to re-open Westwood Studios, hire back the Old Louis Castle led team. And give us a proper ending to the Tiberium Universe, CnC 4 doesn’t exist in my book. The Franchise Ended with Red Alert 3.

The only things that should be FREE are the things that were FREE game unlocks back in the day. Skins, side-quests, extra weapons, extra characters, difficulty and different endings.

OTHERWISE I am more than happy to pay $60 for a GOOD SOLID OFF LINE SINGLE PLAYER game.

Get your heads out of your bums and admit that SIM SHITTY was a fail. We will go to ZYNGA if we want to be clueless gamers.

Generals Zero Hour was a great game. The first Nod/GDI/Aliens one was OK. After that it all just started to suck.
