DRM is so 2003, says Paradox CEO Getting There
   January 25th, 2012 clock image 1:45 pm

While there are very few things that gamers can agree on, a universal hate for DRM seems to be one of the few issues wherein players can reach a mutual understanding. Paradox Interactive CEO Fred Wester feels the same way, and has labelled the system as a complete waste of cash that doesn’t work, while also being a decidedly retro method of copyright protection.

“I’m so surprised that people still use DRM. We haven’t done that for seven or eight years, and the reason is that it doesn’t make sense,” Wester told Gamespy.

The executive said DRM is poor “from a gamer perspective” and provides a “terrible” experience, citing his own difficulties with Civilization III as an example.

No one should have to purchase a product that they’re unable to install because of the DRM. People who purchase a game should have just as easy a time as those who pirate the game, otherwise it’s a negative incentive to buy a legal copy.

The executive then went on to describe the copyright protection method as poor “from a gamer perspective” and that it provided a “terrible” experience, using his own difficulties on Civilization 3 as an example.

And it’s not only the negative side-effect that DRM has on gamers that Wester is against, but the waste of resources from a business side as well that has the CEO questioning it’s validity. “I just can’t see why people are using DRM still. If you take something like Sony’s DRM, SecuROM – it’s a waste of money,” Wester said.

It will keep you protected for three days, it will create a lot of technical support, and it will not increase sales. And I know this for a fact, because we tried it eight years ago, and it never worked for us.

Wester also then went on to speculate that one of the reasons why DRM was still being implemented was because that it provided an easy way out for publishers to show investors how the product was being protected, but he felt that it was a poor reason to still do so.

“Now, I see no reasonable explanation for why people keep on adding it,” Wester said. “Especially the kind where you have to be online all the time, like Ubisoft. I think that’s, to me that’s 2003. ”

The man has a point, as we’re seeing more and more people in the gaming industry, who have their bread and butter stolen by those no good software pirates, speak out against the system.

Considering all the creative types working in the world of gaming, you’d have thought that by now, someone would have come up with a better, more fool-proof system to protect games.

Biggest thing that pissed me off was when my son, then a lighty, bought Halflife 2 for around R300 only to find that inorder for it to run he had to dowenload a few hundred megs of “updates” from Steam (and this on a dial-up). Needless to say we went and found a cracked version and used that instead. Haven’t bought a legal  PC game since. I care rocks for an industry that treats its customers like crooks. Some may disagree but after that debacle I have no sympathy.

I think you should be blaming South Africa’s internet for being light years behind the rest of the world for that. There’s no excuse for piracy.

      • http://twitter.com/JimLenoir James Lenoir

Yeah, as a non-fan of Steam myself, I absolutely understand his frustrations with steam, but I don’t think you can blame the developers for our infrastructure. That’s stretching it. Now you could claim that they should think about territories off the map, but our significance to the gaming world is minuscule.

        • Anonymous

Actually I can blame developers since they were happy to take my son’s cash.
@ weanerdog. Really? You are so intellectually retarded that you have to resort to calling me a douche? I bet you were the star of your high school debating team.

          • Weanerdog

I can only base my opinion on you based on what I have experianced, being your post about pirating games and then blaming the developers for your actions. So yes I called you a douche. If you don’t like the product as is don’t buy it. Yes you can justify that you played a cracked copy of a game you bought that didn’t work. Please justify all the games that you played cracked that you didn’t buy? This is not a rhotorical question by the way, I actually would love an answer.

          • Anonymous

Since you asked, anything that requires Steam. On principle. I should have stated that outright. I don’t pirate every game. I’m happy to pay developers for their products if they don’t treat me like a crook. If my local Spar or Woollies treated me to a pat down every time I shopped there, they would not get my custom for very long. The games industry should be no different. DRM has only fueled the problem of piracy, not reduced it. The industry needs to be taught that if you treat your customers like crap, they’ll return the favour. DRM is particularly problematic in SA where bandwidth is at a premium. If a SA customer has to use expensive bandwidth to download additional, multi-gigabyte files just to play a game they legally paid for, they end up paying even more for that game. There is no logic or justification to that and no amount of name calling will convince me otherwise.

          • Weanerdog

I understand your fustration DRM sucks, agreed; It does not work, agreed. But its their product and you have no rights to it, so if you don’t like it boycot it, just like the Woolies/Spar. If Woolies treated you like a criminal would you then go steal all your groceries? You cannot justify your pirating of these games because of DRM or because of internet updates. That is how it comes and if you want to play it you need to accept that otherwise you are a thief. By the way I am a PC gamer so I have the DRM issue and Origin trying to take over my life every time I switch on my computer and I haven’t bought (or played) a Ubisot game since Assassins creed I because of DRM.

Your son gave them the cash, it was not ‘offered’ (Please Mr. Dev, I offer this money to you…?).  Actually, the more likely scenario is that your son gave a 3rd party that distributes for that developer, cash.  Not the developer.  If you son specifically sent a wire transfer to the dev studio, or wrote a check, or something of that nature, it’d be different (You make it sound like the developer then called Steam and told them it’s ok to let this kid have the game…right).  Since that is likely not the case, it isn’t different.

Weaner may have used a provocative term, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re blaming the wrong people.  Devs have no control over your bandwidth.  Devs have no control over SA’s network infrastructure.  Devs have no control over Steams updates.  For someone calling out another person’s debate skills, and education level, you certainly seem to be very confused about how things work in reality.

    • Weanerdog

No you pirate games because you are a thief with entitlement issues, you justify this by reasons that the man is against you. Know the differance it might make you seen less like a douche.

I remember I did the EXACT same thing with HL2. I bit the bullet and downloaded the patch on my 56k modem. Seems like it didn’t left the same impression on me as it did on you. (Shortly afterwards I switched to console gaming)
To me it would make more sense to only not buy the games with crappy DRM. Resorting to pirate EVERYTHING seems a bit dishonest imo.

Fred Wester…..can we clone you and install you as CEO in other gaming companies? And while we’re at it, let’s give him a country or two to run. The world would be a better place.

I always buy the games i try, and like!!

Civilization III isn’t DRM “protected”, the man talks bullshit. Seems like he wants to gather some attention by parroting old, general complaints.

Uh, dude, a portion of the money paid by the retailer to the distributor gets back to the developer. Do you even understand the concept of economics?
