DriveClub is mostly working. Do you still care?

It’s been nearly two weeks since Evolution Studios PlayStation 4 exclusive DriveClub was released to retail. While it’s certainly a fun and fluid racer that even a racing neophyte can enjoy, the server issues and the resulting lack of online connectivity have left it a soulless husk of the game it should be. Those issues are very nearly sorted – but is it too little too late?

While some people are still unable to get the most out of DriveClub, the majority of players are now online. Here’s the latest from  Evolution Studios:

“We’re still improving server performance to get all of you enjoying full online connectivity together, but the majority of DriveClub players should now be able to connect and play online,” Evolution said on Facebook.

“More server updates and upgrades are coming online over the weekend, so while this work continues you may still experience some issues with connectivity but please keep trying. When you do get connected you can go online, play for your club, use your club cars, play multiplayer races, compete in face-offs, and compare your best times and scores with everyone on the leaderboards. This is in addition to playing in Tour mode, creating your own single events and customising your cars in your garage (which you can do offline too).”

“We are working flat out to get online sign-in, multiplayer racing and leaderboards running smoothly for everyone, all of the time. We can’t thank you enough for your messages of support and feedback during the past week, so please keep talking to us and sharing your thoughts about the game while you play.”

While the game works just fine offline, it strips the game of everything that makes it fun, interesting, and even worthwhile, like the clubs that make up its the latter part of the game’s name. If I’d have purchased the game, I’d be pissed about now. Unfortunately for petrol-headed PlayStation 4 owners though, there’s little else in the way of racing games, especially now that Project Cars has been delayed to next year.

If you bought DriveClub, do you still care – or have you moved on to something else? Can the allure of the game working the way it’s supposed to bring you back? Are you perhaps still waiting for DriveClub’s “free” extended demo PlayStation Plus edition before you make up your mind?

Just another reason why I’ve completely stopped pre-ordering Online Centric games. You simply have to wait and see these days.

Also why I kind of shudder at buying games retail that says “Steam Required”
I bought two games recently, and had to download about 16 GB of patches between them before I was even allowed to play. Single Player.
Whatever happened to the days of buy game on disc. Install disc. Play game?

I’m the exact opposite. If I’m buying retail (which has happened once in the last year and half) it better say Activate on Steam. I like having all my game in the same place. Plus the achievements and Trading Cards are winners. For me, at least.

You do know you can add non steam games to steam, right? 🙂 I am sorry, but this forcing of patches is Bullshit.
If I wanted to spend my weekend downloading games, I would have bought it on Steam. But I went to a store and oh wait! I did spend my weekend downloading games!
          Thank you Steam!

Adding non-Steam games to your library doesn’t add achievements and trading cards, or any of the other handy functions, so I don’t like doing that.
I get what you’re saying. If you’re the person who buys retail, you want to put it in and play, (that’s the whole point) and it’s damn unfair that you can’t. People need to have the option, at least.
I practically live on the internet, so I buy all my games, music and television digitally. So I don’t mind it much.
That said, Shadow of Mordor is the only game I got retail this year, because I couldn’t bear the thought of downloading 45Gigs.

If I had a 4MB/s line, I would have bought Steam exclusively too. No. That’s a lie. I prefer retail. No. That’s a lie.
45 Gigs is a lot to download for one game.

It is. I only have a 2mb/s line and so far I’m doing fine. So far.
Though I have been throttled once, which really creates a problem if you want to buy a new game.
If it was like a few years ago where you just need to connect once to activate the game, it would be fine (for piracy reasons and all), but these patches are ridiculous.

I get the idea these patches are to keep the game up to date for the multi player aspect of the game. So why can it not be done that, as soon as I click Multiplayer, it then downloads said monstrous patch?

I agree. I’ve never even used most of games’ multiplayer side.

I will come back it – bought it, tried it without server access, but will come back to it later down the road.

Sounds a lot like Diablo 3, Titanfall, Sim City etc… Server issues become apparent during the beta period and then you can almost be guaranteed that there will be loads of server issues when the game officially launches.

After seeing what DRM did to Simcity 5 and Diablo 3, I will never buy an online only game. Never again.

Don’t support DRM. The Witcher 3 horse races is coming.

I bet they open port forwarding on their routers. Also they assigned static IPs for all their servers. But they still need to reboot the router every now and then. I mean it worked for Destiny. I will still download the PS+ version but I doubt I’d spend any actual money on it.

i’m still waiting for the free one.
I figure if it’s working then, then there will be loads of other freeloaders like me playing on-line. will consider upgrading if i like it.

Wasn’t really an option before, but with Project Cars being delayed, this looks like the only racing game on PS4 (well, that and NFS Rivals)

So many people returning this for refunds, damage has been done! Sony tried to copy FORZA 5 with all the online features etc. but they clearly do not have the power of the CLOUDZ! ????
