Despite having only two games in the series, Dragon Age has a surprisingly chequered past. Origins was like a gift from The Maker himself, harking back to the RPG eras of old and delivering an all-round stellar experience. Dragon Age II, although not terrible, failed to live up to the first’s exceptional standards – an odd thing to say about a BioWare game. Inquisition is not the same Dragon Age as Origins, but it manages to take the best of both previous games and deliver something truly spellbinding.

ScreenshotWin32_0034_Final_WM.png

Dragon Age hasn’t been overhauled, but Inquisition certainly makes it feel different. That’s clear from the minute things kick off, as the focus of nearly everything happening around Thedas swirls slowly around you. Having survived a devastating attack on peace talks between the Chantry and the Templars, you’re left standing at the center of a massive rift that is allowing creatures from the Fade to creep into the world. The Breach threatens all life in Ferelden and its surrounding regions, and (surprise surprise) you’re the only one who can stop it.

Your followers like to call you the Herald or Inquisitor, but what Dragon Age makes you feel like is The Chosen One. The anchor, a green glowing cut on your hand that looks like radioactive gangrene, is the only thing that is able to close smaller Rifts leading to the Fade, and ultimately the massive green scar in the sky that’s making life a living hell. Inquisition uses this as a main driving force initially, but things soon shift into more political and sister territory. Someone was clearly behind the attack that left hundreds dead and a deep rooted scar on your hand, so it’s up to you and the bureaucratically free Inquisition to find out what’s what.

That sounds extremely linear, but playing as a brand new, powerful character makes things interesting. You’re the decision maker, the one residing on important choices and generation defining moments in history. Inquisition makes you feel every possible ramification of your choices – sometimes immediately and other times much further down the line. Thedas is still reeling from the Mage uprising, a delicate political feud that you’ll have to deal with even though the world is being ripped apart by all manners of demons. Inquisition finds a cohesive narrative balance throughout though, interweaving tales almost effortlessly and still ensuring that your acts as the Inquisitor have a noticeable impact on the world around you.

ScreenshotWin32_0024_Final_WM.png

While the story revolves around your Inquisitor, it’s the bulk of the support cast that really brings the entire tale to life. Inquisition features a massive cast of incredibly diverse and interesting characters, all of whom have their own personal qualms just waiting to be investigated. There are hardly any cheap cliches to be found here, giving way for emotionally deep characters that you’ll feel compelled to sit down and have a conversion with. Their reactions to dialogue rest on some of the decisions you made as the all powerful Inquisitor, and BioWare really don’t need to prove anything further in this department. Dialogue, side characters and your closer party members are all spot on – a testament to tremendous skilled writing.

This incredibly long journey is about you though, and it all starts with character creation. There are five classes to pick from, simmering down to three fundamental choices: Rogue, Warrior or Mage. These are standard decisions in fantasy RPGs, so you’re probably feel right at home with your regular playing class. Picking between a Human, Elf, Dwarf or Qunari also affects your class, as race specific traits can make or break a build at higher difficulties. If you choose to play on normal though, this choice becomes easier and allows for more reckless combinations, considering the forgiving nature of combat.

Inquisition will not test your strategic fortitude unless you really start cranking up the difficulty. That’s nothing to get particularly alarmed over, since the combat is so incredibly satisfying throughout. It’s slick and fluid even on the limitations of a controller, allowing you to fire off skills and spells with ease and at a blistering pace. If you take on equally skilled enemies, you’re more than likely to get through just by focusing on yourself, playing as your Inquisitor, or any of your three party members, while everyone else on autopilot works in most cases. It allows you to just have fun with the combat while actually making a difference in battle, rather than tackling every encounter in a stop/start manner.

ScreenshotWin32_0025_Final_WM.png

More challenging encounters will force you to start thinking a lot more, and that’s where the tactical camera becomes your best friend. You’re able to pause the game and issue commands mid-battle, constructing your offense or eventual defense with absolute precision. The camera in tactical view can be a bit wonky at times, especially since it obeys the laws of regular traversal. You’ll have to use stairs to reach higher ground using an invisible camera, which sometimes put enemies out of my reach for no apparent reason. Still, the tactical view transforms Inquisition’s more action-focused combat into something slower – a feature fans will definitely be tickled pink over.

Having entertaining combat is great, since you’re going to encounter thousands of enemies that want to take your head off as you travel all over Thedas. Inquisition has an almost immeasurable scale. Instead of one massive open world, BioWare opted to cut up areas and create several massive hub worlds for you to get lost in. These hubs are peppered with content, supplementing the rather excellent main quests with all manners of side distractions. Some of these devolve into simple fetch quests that don’t really do anything but keep your experience counter ticking, but a fair share end up weaving into the Inquisition’s expansion over Thedas. Whether you’re taking over an enemy occupied fort to establish a hold over a region, or collecting supplies to bolster the Inquisition’s forces, everything feels like it fits into the greater picture, and therefore always feels important.

ScreenshotWin32_0032_Final_WM.png

Not only is most of this content good, but it also seems endless. Inquisition doesn’t let you rush through it, forcing you to wander off the laid out path and undertake new challenges. Completing quests rewards you with Power, which is used at your War Table to scout out and unlock new areas. The War Table also acts as the hub for the Inquisition’s operations, allowing you to send out party members to complete objectives in your stead. These are simple, duration based missions that offer up some small rewards, which takes out the fun of actually establishing a humanity saving operation. Dragon Age’s best parts include your involvement, and that’s where most of your time will be spent anyway.

Exploration isn’t just engrossing, it’s also an unbelievable visual treat, with the power of the latest Frostbite engine being put to its best use here. Inquisition is breathtakingly beautiful, with a varied and incredible interesting art direction bringing each region to life. Venturing out of Ferelden rewards you with the most stunning vistas the game has on offer, with the arid, desert regions lying to the far west being particularly standout. Inquisition is a fantasy RPG that sticks to traditional forest and wild lands roots, but isn’t afraid to venture out into a more expansive world. It makes the game feel that much bigger when the world feels this incurable massive, and seeing your influence reaching every tip is extremely rewarding.

ScreenshotWin32_0021_Final_WM.png

Inquisition is a game that’s going to keep you pushing forward for weeks, but it’s life is extended by a series first multiplayer mode. In similar fashion to Mass Effect 2, Inquisition’s multiplayer let’s you team up with friends and take on waves of enemies. You’ll upgrade skills, earn boosts to better future runs and pick up a few new characters along the way, all while slogging through three maps filled with ever changing enemies. Multiplayer is functional, but not all that engrossing as a singular experience. Although Inquisition’s combat is more action-focused, it’s still a relatively slow affair. Bottling that into a co-operative experience doesn’t translate as well as some may have hoped, but the game stands tall on its own two feet without it anyway.

Dragon age: Inquisition
In a few ways, Inquisition feels like a soft reboot of the Dragon Age series. Combat is different, Thedas has changed and the story has never been more about you as a character. It's still Dragon Age at heart, retaining some of the series' defining features, but it's hard to overlook some of the new, brilliant design choices that BioWare have made. Inquisition exudes ambition, and it's one of the very best RPGs you could ever hope to lose yourself to.

It looks incredible easily as good as the high end pc version my bro has. It’s v smooth on play even in the mist heated battles and it flows beautifully. Gr8 story too with way too much 2 see and discover. Hope you enjoy Tc and happy xmas D

Well, the first time I finished ME3 I felt like I didn’t want to play the games again because the thing that made me play it was the illusion of choice, which was well made. It wasn’t even an illusion most of the time. Until it was revealed that it was. Nothing you do made much difference. That sort of does eat away the immersion in a game that is all about making choices that will determine the outcome of your playthrough, don’t you think? 😉

Yeah the controls are whack…but I learned that it is easier to move with the mouse by clicking than actually using WASD. My character is a total nut job. I’m basing his personality on Archer, the cartoon series. Momma’s boy, very spoilt brat, cocky but for some reason very good at fighting.

I think it’s more the gameplay which is bothering me. I am playing a dual wield rogue and am finding the fact that the character does not automatically close the gap annoying. For example I could be attacking someone and someone will shield bash and then i am like 5 feet away stabbing away at thin air.

After playing Neverwinter online and using the rogue there, it just feels like Bioware’s gameplay is just not on the same level. In neverwinter you feel like a tricky sneaky agile character and part of that is how the controls synergise and just make it easy to close the gap and attack seamlessly.

While for DA it feels clunky and I feel like a tit when I am wailing away at thin air. Only to close the gap and have the enemy fall.

I suppose a lot of this will start to feel better. It just seems like it was second nature in Neverwinter and in DA not so much.

            November 25, 2014 at 01:09

i think its more about them dictating the playstyle, its an issue with most classes, theyr not particularly versatile.

the dual wielding rogue isnt meant to run up at them, you should be using your abilities to engage. that skill tree alone has atleast 2 jump attacks(havent looked at it much, im an archer) then theres still sneak and the grapple from the poison skill tree.
as well as the fact that targets that use shield bash should be instantly locked down in the tactics window.
the low cooldowns also work out so that your main engaging spells are ready by the time a target is finished.

not being used to the combat system is fairly common though, when you get so invested in other combat systems within the same genre. i really struggle with the difference in shooting mechanics from battlefield to CoD, playing both made muscle memory a pain.

i personally find that the combat system in this makes way more sense than neverwinter nights did, i really struggled with that game, it didnt feel natural at all to me.
but once you get a grasp of the more streamlined mechanics, combat speeds up big time.

          • Gerard Matthews

            November 25, 2014 at 09:29

            You make some good points.

I know the rogue is not meant to engage like that and I do hang back it’s just situations where my target which is not paying any attention to me moves and my engage skills are on cooldown, I feel awkward when trying to close that gap manually.

Because of that sometimes I am losing dps for my normal strikes.

Strangely there are instances where my rogue will suddenly flash forward. I guess I just have to learn how to get that to happen more regularly.

That being said I feel more comfortable the more I play. I suppose it’s the hours and hours that I have in other systems which is throwing me off.

        November 24, 2014 at 02:13

PC controls arent too bad, personally think you have more control over the fights on the keyboard.
DA:O was pretty much unplayable for me on PC, tried again recently and it was just terrible, so janky.
but DA:I seems to have taken on alot of the DA2 control, so its all pretty smooth, ive had no problems with it.
key bindings are a bit odd for some of the less common commands, but i usually ignore them anyway, the odd ones are reserved for a more console type play style.

Took 8 steps forward when it decided to do a bombing run, instakilled 2 of my party, that’s when I was like NOPE. Wait until you come across the “battle of the dragon” in the storm coast. now that was awesomely done

          • Matthew Holliday

            November 24, 2014 at 12:14

not even attempting the dragon fights untill im confident i can ezpz wrek him.

theres not enough health potions to drag the fight out enough, even if you control the agro effectively, the mage still drops like its hot, so theres very little value in trying to res your teamies when they revive on 10% hp with no potions left.
that and you’re likely to use atleast 1 or 2 health pots on the route to the dragon when he decides to drop bombs on your head, so you’re already at a disadvantage.

I guess it makes sense though, the dragons are supposed to be OP as, so i should be considering the entire approach aswell as the fight as one fight and planning accordingly.
will give him another go tonight.

the giant + dragon battle on the storm coast was pretty rad, but the giant dropped way too easilly, the dragon should have roflstomped that giant.

          • William Francis

            November 24, 2014 at 12:22

Yeah I know the feel, I’m also running a mage, the barrier is a must though, as it helps keep the team alive long enough to survive the initial onslaught. You have to be quick at it though, because if you miss, its bye bye health potion as you stated.

I generally mark off the spots I cannot do at the time, such as some of the fade rifts spawning baddies with a big bad skull on them, then I run like a little girl, do other stuffs for a few hours, and try again 2-3 levels up. So far its worked well. Either way, 16 hours, lvl 9 frost/resto mage, me = 0, dragon = 6.

Side note: There are 10!! of the bastards

yeah, im an elf archer, im up to 20 hours-ish at level 11, i think.
things were rough at the start, untill the party members started coming in, now its opened up a bit and having multiple options for the frontliners is pretty usefull, wish the classes were a bit more versatile though.

I am lvl 12 and I am on 35 hours 😉 playing on Hard, it is an awesome challenge and I explore like every piece of land.

I should have created a Mage instead of a Rogue (think ‘n mage will be a lot more involved) but I will do it in my second play through. So far the game looks like it have replay-ability …

tanks and mages control the fight, so playing as one of those would be so much more usefull and they have so many spells for specific situations, you cant just let your minions waste them.

            ooohh wait wait here 😉

My current setup is Warrior, Melee Rogue, Range Rogue and Mage.

Warrior tanking is so epic. They made a warrior tank SO FUN. I managed to solo the one boss fight with my tank with regen potions and the shield wall ability. (my rogue got 1 shotted, my ranger died because I was a sleep and my mage died because she ran into a wall and could not get out the way)

My rogue pumps the damage, I am currently on lvl 12 and I am doing between 1500-2000 crit dmg on enemy mages. On heavy melee it goes to a 1000 sometimes 1500 depends if I got extra debuffs on the target.

My tactic is very simple. My mage stun the other target with the freez spell, I got the upgrade to drop the armour value on frozen targets. Mage do one dmg shot to drop the enemy mage HP to about 60-70% and my rogue does one shot… BOOOM dead. My rogue solo most casters.
If my rogue flank the enemy, the rogue does a lot more dmg and I do not think my mage or rogue ranger can do that amount of dmg.

It is a very positional class, so you need to micro manage it a lot. Which I LOVE from the dragon age games. It just make you feel more epic if you managed to win a fight like that 😉

I have played a Rogue in DA: O and DA:2 and in both games my Rogue(melee) dps was just OP.

The only flaw is it is a glass cannon. If the boss does one AOE swipe or a AOE bomb then my rogue is in pieces …

I think in my second play through I will go Mage (main) Mage Warrior tank and Warrior DPS going to be hard because I just love Varric … ugh

            November 25, 2014 at 01:21

melee rogue damage is mega OP, but archers are the safe bet for first playthroughs, so i stuck with that.
never playing an elf again though, the skinny prick has such lame armour and skinny arms and neck.

i change my setup quite a bit.
im a rogue archer, so i either run a dual tank + mage specced into damage, rather than control, or a tank, melee rogue and defensive mage.

im a lazy player, so i generally go with 2 agro and disable controllers.

that warden guy is an epic tank, especially when you spec him into his personal skill tree and vanguard, he just rolls into fights, tanks everything and sits on 0hp for the whole fight, just refusing to die.
but dealing so little damage, you almost have to spec a few points into 2 handed though and forgo a shield if you want to deal any sort of consistent damage and agro control from him.

No patch is required on PC. At least not on game purchased direct through Origin. I have been playing for a couple of hours now and not a sign of a bug. Preloaded it a couple of days ago. Just had to log in to servers, downloaded optional English voice over, and away. Graphics amazing!

Complete crap because of the controls.

Here’s one of many huge threads on the matter: http://forum.bioware.com/forum/385-feedback-suggestions

They ported over sh*tty console controls and ruined anything from DA:O that worked.

Example – you can’t just click on loot and have your character go open it. You have to inch near it and then click in a small dot. Ridiculous.

Tactical combat is just as appalling.

Erm, just a little thing. ” In similar fashion to Mass Effect 2, Inquisition’s multiplayer let’s you team up with friends and take on waves of enemies.”

I’m thinking you meant Mass Effect 3, Mr. Barrrbosa.

Good review. As this was a fairly short review, I did have the attention span to notice that you felt as if the side-quests were actually worthwhile and gave you a sense of accomplishment. I felt completely the opposite. Rant begins: I find the beginning of the game to be sort of slow and a bit grindy. There isn’t enough freedom on the whole leveling aspect and exploration one. (Yes, I got out of the Hinterlands as fast as possible) Many say that “the game will let you do what you want to” and in a sense I think that’s a bad thing. More often than not I found myself hunting for some lost sheep for some farmer in the Hinterlands when I was level 12, looking for Power points to advance in the story, all the time thinking to myself “If these are indeed side quests, should they not be completely optional?” I mean sure, the usual stuff is there. More XP, money, some gear and a “Thanks” from the guy who gave you the quest, sure, however I feel like the sidequests are a bit forced on to you, the same way the activities in Saints Row the Third were. Yes, you can choose what side-quests you can do, hunt for materials in the wilds and micromanage your War Table at the same time in order to gain those Power points, which are needed to advance the story for those who’ve yet to play the game. In short, it all feels a bit grindy. I know I feel entitled. Maybe getting used to the main-course of filled pheasant handed onto me on a silver plate and fed to me by an elf concubine with a platinum fork encased with cut diamonds from the depths of the South-African mines has.. spoiled me a bit. But in games like (yes, the game which all RPGs I compare because I am such a casual) Skyrim or the Witcher 2 I sort of felt like actually wanting to do the side-quests because I could. Not because I have to. Ah, I know it’s hard to explain what I’m saying but just hear me out.

A short while ago, BioWare detected that 70% of it’s players always chose the Paragon path on the first playthrough. The rest went Renegade. When Casey Hudson, then project director at BioWare, was asked that would they remove the option for Renegade from Mass Effect, as not a lot of people actually choose.
Hudson responded with quite well. He said that having the illusion of choice – the illusion that what you did actually affected something in the world makes it all worthwhile and is essential to the whole way Mass Effect works. The way Dragon Age has gone, you’d think it is Mass Effect with a fantasy D&D like setting. It used to do it’s own thing, like an old school RPG, and I feel like I miss that. Don’t get me wrong, the fluid and fast-paced combat is welcome. In DA:O combat felt a bit.. well, dull, but I’m getting sidetracked here. BACK TO THE ISSUE WITH SIDE-QUESTS. They seem like they’re forced upon you. That there is no other incentive than the points. I always felt like “Well, I have to do this in order to do all the cool stuff, so I’ll guess I’ll have to do it..” about the side-quests. Some where fun, others dull, others just.. well, meh, but the whole thing just sort of left a bad taste in my mouth considering the game is in all aspects *FUCKING AWESOME*.
I just feel this part of the game sticks out like a rusty nail in an otherwise well polished arm of a chair that I sit in whilst my elf concubines feed me gold painted grapes from the greatest wine-farms this side of the galaxy.

Fantastic game either way. Definitely my GOTY 2014. (Haven’t got around Far Cry 4 yet, will wait until the Day 1 patch shit is dealt with. Unless it already has. Either way, need to finish this game a second time first.)

The only thing I would say – don’t bother buying this on older consoles. I only have a PS3, and whilst the game is everything said above (seriously amazing, well worth buying) it crashes, lags horribly and glitches loads constantly (mainly characters falling through the floor, or hitting a wall and just going bonkers until they walk away from it, rifts look pixellated, etc). It does seem like the older hardware isn’t fully capable of handling it.

The graphics on the old-gen version struggles a bit. Everything is so shiny it all looks varnished (even dead trees shine like freshly polished silver), but from what I see from clips and images, the PS4 version doesn’t do this. It does look pretty, but as I say. It struggles.

This COULD of course be my PS3 simply playing up. But it’s a heads up nonetheless. When I get my PS4 I’ll definitely be re-buying it so I can enjoy it in all its glory.

Best rpg I’ve played on next gen bar none. Superb story, incredible visuals with sharp detailed textures and the best open world environments I’ve ever seen in an rpg that destroys skyrim & any other rpg 2 date. It really is exquisite and beautiful. Gr8 gameplay with v smooth combat &excellent freeze facility 2 allow tactical input of strategic planning in battles. Make no mistake that this is a massive rpg that eats skyrim 4 breakfast in every area & then some! Highly recommend just hope we get a ps4 patch 2 iron out the glitches asap. Gr8 online play with 4 players 2 as an added bonus 2 a massive rpg that has and incredible amount of main quests, side series & tons of treasures /areas 2 discover. 85 hours in I’m not even scratching the surface. Highly recommend to everyone -rpg livers or just casual players. Witcher 3 will have to be really exceptional to beat this. D

I must admit to being both excited yet concerned about Dragon Age: Inquisition, primarily because I loved Origins so much on PC but found 2 to be a crushing bore of a game (that only impressed in its graphics). As such, I held off pre-ordering until I was confident the game would be good. I’ve been trying to watching as many walkthrough videos of this game as I could in the last week or so and finally placed a pre-order for the PS4 version a couple of days ago.

The fact that the review references The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion for the storyline definitely pleases me as I love that game but other than the predictable start it does sound like a solid game that offers thankfully more variety in its environments than Dragon Age 2 did. At long last, I can breath a sigh of relief and start to look forward to actually playing it. pc game downloads

Another paid reviewer selling out to the Bioware game designers who pay for fake reviews of their games. Notice how it’s always some foreign street rat from a 3rd world country who amazingly finds his way to a viable Internet connection to give this epic failure of a video game positive reviews. $5USD, and I bet he gets to finally eat real meat for a month, and in exchange, he becomes Bioware’s singing, chirping little parakeet. A bought and paid for cheerleader. Pathetic.

How would Alessandro rate a jigsaw puzzle with a bunch of limp penises dangling around the mouth of a goat…? For $5, he’ll call it “spellbinding”, “an engrossing visual treat”, and “testament to tremendous(sic) skilled writing”. First, learn proper English before doing your fake reviews for English speaking people to read. Second, calling this game anything but boring, disorganised, horribly written, repetative, and totally unrewarding is being dishonest. What you call it is nothing short of a steaming load of crap.

“Inquisition finds a cohesive narrative balance throughout though, interweaving tales almost effortlessly and still ensuring that your acts as the Inquisitor have a noticeable impact on the world around you.”

Ok, Im going to go throw up now after reading that delusional trash.

Anyone who has had the misfortune of getting duped into buying and then wasting a few hours of their life away playing this failure of a video game, upon reading that wildly absurd, nauseating quote from this article, will say with unequivocal conviction that this reviewer is a dirty, lying FRAUD. The type of spineless worm with no honor, no integrity, no real friends, who will undoubtedly delete this comment just like the deceiful, pathetic little b**** he is. You’re better off deleting this bogus review Alessandro, your online reputation as a (fake) game reviewer will now likely be slaughtered, chopped up, minced, seasoned, fried, and fed to the pigs, and this page will be a shining example to reference while that happens.
