Dragon Age: Inquisition on Origin only for master race

DAI origin

It was to be expected. EA and Valve don’t like each other anymore, so any games from EA will be distributed via Origin instead of Steam. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Dragon Age: Inquisition will be the same – but does that affect your purchasing decision?

Personally, it doesn’t matter much to me – I plan on playing this awesome looking RPG from the comfort of my couch, on a new-generation console. Unfortunately, my console won’t look like this, although that would be rather pretty:

However, not all of you want to play this game on console like a peasant me. Some of you are planning to settle into your PC cave, but thanks to this official confirmation, that PC gaming experience won’t include Steam achievements or trading cards:

I know a lot of people hate on Origin – I’m one of them. I’m not sure if it’s the same on PC, but on Mac it is horrible to use – everything is stupidly slow and really clunky. I suppose it’s just more difficult for Origin to figure out how to scan my hard drive on Mac than PC. In all seriousness, does this revelation make you change your platform of choice for Bioware’s upcoming RPG? Were you hoping that you could still play it on Steam, or did you already assume that you’d be loading up Origin to get into Thedas?

Origins a pretty big pain in the ass to be honest. Gives me more headaches than actually use, probably going to get the console version instead now.

Exclusive to Origin on the PC. That’s like saying that the game is exclusive to Xbox Live and not the Xbox One. It’s like saying the game is exclusive to PSN+ and not the PS4.

Exclusive to Origin on the PC reads to me: No other clients supported. You know, since the PS and the Xbone only have their own clients.

So if you play the game on the Xbox One, PS4, PC without internet and not logged into Xbox Live, PSN, Origin. I wonder which with can’t play the game.

My PC should be the client to play the game, not Origin.

Steam isn’t. Steam is a platform. Steamworks has an OPTIONAL DRM component that developers can choose to use. There’s actually a few games that once downloaded you could copy the game folder to another location & run the game without even loading Steam.

          • Ryanza

            July 22, 2014 at 10:08

The words you used to make it all better, “a few games”.

I don’t that any of the games I have on Steam is DRM free. I don’t think there has been a big game released to be DRM free on Steam.

The Witcher 2 can not be played without being logged into Steam. But the nice guys at GOG.com let’s you use the Steam DRM code to unlock the DRM free version on GOG.com.

So to sum it up. Nearly all games have DRM on Steam. So Steam = DRM.

Non of the games on GOG.com has DRM. So GOG.com = no DRM.

            Don’t support DRM

Don’t support developers. lol. and because of DRM and Steam on the PC, developers don’t get the same level of support, they get from console gamers.
At least Microsoft and Sony get their cut, why shouldn’t Steam get it’s cut. Does Steam own the PC platform. And developers are not releasing their games on PC without Steam. Madness. Oh wait. Let’s see how well The Witcher 3 does on PC.

            Don’t support DRM.

            For interest’s sake: http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

            It includes HL2 funnily enough.

😛 What on earth are you saying .. that developer actually get support from the console gamers? On the other hand, there are so MANY modding and fan forum for PC only game …. goes figures.

As for DRM, Steam’s version is actually one of the more benign ones, compared to Origin which actually SCANS your PC for files that it have no right scanning.

            http://www.cinemablend.com/games/EA-Says-Origin-Isn-t-Spyware-Although-It-Does-Scan-Your-Entire-PC-36690.html

On the other hand, most of the time Steam just requires you to install it through the client and it is quite easy to put it to offline mode to play.

As for resource intensiveness, I can’t really say since I do NOT even want to touch Origin. But from the fact that it is scanning your PC (which definitely takes up processing cycles) and the general sentiment and feedback on the various forums, it is clunky, non intuitive and resource intensive.

Mostly all of the games released on PC requires Steam to just install the game. And you will need to be connected to the internet just to install the game.

If I go into Btgames now and look at new released games on the PC, it will most likely need Steam before you can do anything.

So Steam is DRM. You can not go into a retail store and buy a new PC game and just install it and just play it without Steam, Origin, Uplay.

The Witcher 3 is coming and I can not wait.

But do I now go an boycott EA for everything they do? No. The answer is simple. If you do not like what EA does to a certain game, then do not buy that game. Let your wallet do the voting. If they see we don’t buy into their Microtransaction BS, then it would make business sense for them to stop doing that.

I for one just generally don’t support EA as a whole because we remain in the minority here, as most people will buy the games regardless of what it has or doesn’t have.

The Sims games have always been a game about the extras. Even from The Sims 1 days you could easily add your own paintings, Sims and the like to the game. And it was a blast.
But the thing that got me worried about The Sims 4 is that I get the idea I am going to be buying half a game.
So I will wait for the reviews to come in, at the very least. If they say good game and good value for money out of the box, then I am in. If not… EA can kiss my lily white ass…

The problem with Origin is we never know if the problem is with the game or with Origin. My experience with Origin is that it is not stable and I had a constant line drop / disconnection issues.
Games such as Sim city would tell you the connection with Origin was lost, then kicks you out of the game. So was this an Origin or Sim city issue.

For long I have been searching for a hard copy of Mass Effect 3 in stores to no avail one trip to Kalahari later a copy would arrive in 12 working days, true as bob it arrived I hastened to install it went through the activation process but upon activation it would only give me the option to download not install, a precursory look on the forums told me this bug has existed at launch and still not fixed, some suggested calling EA help and ask for a new code, I followed this advice and still had the same problem. It was suggested that the problem occurred when using a copy of the game that came from another market. I examined the disc and found out that it was the british version, a second call to EA later and them ensuring me that both codes (original and regenerated) were not region locked nor for digital versions of the game I was flummoxed the poor guy could help me no longer he directed me to a few forum posts that suggested outlandish solutions. I tried one (involving starting the download (deleting downloaded files while keeping folder structure, unpack the game disks and copy across then resume the download so it can fix the install) it worked but I am still amazed that a game nearly two years old has not had this bug fixed by EA.

I just hope the same doesn’t happen come october as my pre order is with Kalahari

    many apologies for the rant

This is sort of like pointing out the obvious…
Did anyone expect it to be any other way? It’s not like you play fifa on steam…

I don’t buy games on Origin. I’ll either skip it or pirate it.

I hope its good. Da2 and me3 already taught me the price of such hope. So by that I’m not buying it for $70 untested. Now throw in the fact its ea and already at launch there is $10 dlc for horse armor and weapons and I expect an onslaught of it I won’t be buying it until the game is whole. Again not shelling out 70+10+10+10+20+5 until the end of their dlc cycle. I’d pay 60 for an ultimate edition with full no exception dlc pass for the satisfaction on getting it instantly. Not 70 on top of that game unplayed to be milked.

I don’t like the platform,I don’t like the company and the last 2 chances I gave them were both regretful buys. So its a toss up between skipping it, pirate (since they dont make decent demos anymore), or waiting for the clusterfuck of ea’s onsalught to be over for a finished product.

That said I have the witcher 3 long preordered. When people don’t hate you they can trust you and do silly things like pre-order an infinite product. Ea doesn’t have my trust, origins included and I hate them as much as you can possibly hate a stranger.

If the only way I can get play it is through Origin, then I will not be buying this game.

so pc gamers MUST purchase and play through ‘origin’? i know it won’t, but i hope that crushes the “dragon age” brand. that’s coming from someone who loves the game through and through… it’s BS enough i have to use an interface in the first place (steam, origin, playfire). as long as the devs and profiteers think the game is about them and not about the fansplayers, they deserve to fail.

I went to buy it today – only to realize it’s only on Origin. I won’t buy it – too many bad experiences with Origin software and too many regretted purchases. I’ll wait a year and see if it gets discounted or magically finds its way to Steam.

Is it possible to buy elsewhere and play (and get expansions) without Origin?

I hate Origin with a PASSION. For years I’ve had problems not being able to access my bought account, made another one, ended up being locked out of that also. They have a STUPID system where if you cannot log in, you have to send a ticket, to do that you have to log in….. WOW REALLY? I even reset the password…. get the email confirmation it worked, and STILL cannot log in with the password I JUST GOT AN EMAIL FROM THEM SAYING IT ALL WAS RESET FINE. Since repeat same problem, Origin blows so hard, will not buy anything through them.

*sigh* Still trying to purchase Dragon Age: Inquisition on Origin, and no luck (error #5000). 😛

I’m not sure it matters whether it’s on PC or console since XBL got hacked, PSN got hacked, but so did Origin… and I can’t even login to my Origin application to play any EA games on PC because 2-step verification isn’t sending codes to my phone. 🙁

Just pirate EA’s games to death, then they will have to start placing their games on steam.]

Hey Zoe, what happen? What caused EA and Steam to split? The Final straw?

Could be for a good article unto itself. Every time I hear a split with no explanation I think of RARE.

    R.I.P RARE
