DAI origin

It was to be expected. EA and Valve don’t like each other anymore, so any games from EA will be distributed via Origin instead of Steam. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Dragon Age: Inquisition will be the same – but does that affect your purchasing decision?

Personally, it doesn’t matter much to me – I plan on playing this awesome looking RPG from the comfort of my couch, on a new-generation console. Unfortunately, my console won’t look like this, although that would be rather pretty:

However, not all of you want to play this game on console like a peasant me. Some of you are planning to settle into your PC cave, but thanks to this official confirmation, that PC gaming experience won’t include Steam achievements or trading cards:

I know a lot of people hate on Origin – I’m one of them. I’m not sure if it’s the same on PC, but on Mac it is horrible to use – everything is stupidly slow and really clunky. I suppose it’s just more difficult for Origin to figure out how to scan my hard drive on Mac than PC. In all seriousness, does this revelation make you change your platform of choice for Bioware’s upcoming RPG? Were you hoping that you could still play it on Steam, or did you already assume that you’d be loading up Origin to get into Thedas?

Wielding my lasso of truth, I am the combination of nerd passion and grammar nazi. I delve into all things awesome and geek-tastic. I believe people should stop defining themselves and just enjoy playing games, so let's get on with it!

  • Lord Chaos

I boycott Origin as far as possible, so I’d rather play it on console.

    • Sith JJ

Me too. So in my case I’m just not getting the game.

  • VampyreSquirrel

Oh well, guess I’m not getting this game on PC at all then :P

    • Richard Tønnessen

I am, just not through Origin.

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Thanks for the confirmation Captain Obvious ;P

  • Ross Woofels Mason

Origins a pretty big pain in the ass to be honest. Gives me more headaches than actually use, probably going to get the console version instead now.

  • Ryanza

Exclusive to Origin on the PC. That’s like saying that the game is exclusive to Xbox Live and not the Xbox One. It’s like saying the game is exclusive to PSN+ and not the PS4.

    Don’t support DRM.

    • Sith JJ

Exclusive to Origin on the PC reads to me: No other clients supported. You know, since the PS and the Xbone only have their own clients.

      • Ryanza

So if you play the game on the Xbox One, PS4, PC without internet and not logged into Xbox Live, PSN, Origin. I wonder which with can’t play the game.

My PC should be the client to play the game, not Origin.

        Don’t support DRM

        • Sith JJ

Agreed, just chasing the logic there.
And yes. Don’t support DRM. (which is a big reason why I do buy lots of Steam and GOG games)

          • Ryanza

chasing the logic lol. That’s like saying Steam is not DRM.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Steam isn’t. Steam is a platform. Steamworks has an OPTIONAL DRM component that developers can choose to use. There’s actually a few games that once downloaded you could copy the game folder to another location & run the game without even loading Steam.

          • Ryanza

The words you used to make it all better, “a few games”.

I don’t that any of the games I have on Steam is DRM free. I don’t think there has been a big game released to be DRM free on Steam.

The Witcher 2 can not be played without being logged into Steam. But the nice guys at GOG.com let’s you use the Steam DRM code to unlock the DRM free version on GOG.com.

So to sum it up. Nearly all games have DRM on Steam. So Steam = DRM.

Non of the games on GOG.com has DRM. So GOG.com = no DRM.

            Don’t support DRM

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

You missed the finer point, but anyway.

          • Ryanza

Don’t support developers. lol. and because of DRM and Steam on the PC, developers don’t get the same level of support, they get from console gamers.
At least Microsoft and Sony get their cut, why shouldn’t Steam get it’s cut. Does Steam own the PC platform. And developers are not releasing their games on PC without Steam. Madness. Oh wait. Let’s see how well The Witcher 3 does on PC.

            Don’t support DRM.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            DRM-free Collector’s Edition already preordered. :D

            For interest’s sake: http://steam.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_DRM-free_games

            It includes HL2 funnily enough.

          • Sith JJ

            It isn’t

          • Ryanza

Mostly all of the games released on PC requires Steam to just install the game. And you will need to be connected to the internet just to install the game.

If I go into Btgames now and look at new released games on the PC, it will most likely need Steam before you can do anything.

So Steam is DRM. You can not go into a retail store and buy a new PC game and just install it and just play it without Steam, Origin, Uplay.

The Witcher 3 is coming and I can not wait.

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

      Amen brother!

  • Lardus-Resident Perve

Doesn’t bother me, as I was planning on playing from my bed in any case on a new console! Just waiting for that last bonus before I decide on “dance academy” or console…or both!

    • Sith JJ

Dance academy. Pays for itself. I danced my way through university.

      • Lardus-Resident Perve

I love dancing. I can watch beautiful women do it all night long!

      • Mossel

        LOL!!

  • The_aQuato

I seriously don’t get how this affects anything, I play the game for the game, I could give a crap if it’s on origin or not. Heck, they can even say the game will only be on floppies on PC with origin bundled with it and I’d still play it on PC

    • Dutch Matrix

Please! Stop making sense like that! It is not allowed on these forums! Here we hate EA simply for being EA.
(Personally, I am with you. If the game is that important to you, why bother about the method of delivery?)

      • Sageville

Well the floppies reference was silly, does anyone actually still have access to such ancient tech?

        • The_aQuato

The reference was to emphasize how silly such logic is

          • Sageville

I’m with you on the logic, I’ve never cared about Origin, Uplay or steam fanboyisms.

          • Sageville

That being said, at my work, I found this ancient relic, still in original packaging…

          • The_aQuato

That should be in a museum or something! lol

          • Mossel

            Made with lightning!

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Wow! You must never unwrap it. Let future generations experience the wonder of TDK cassettes.

        • Hammersteyn

I got a couple in the back still I think but no, no one uses it.

        • Sith JJ

I hear Admiral Chief as a sliver in his back where you can still insert them.

          • Hammersteyn

            hahaha

          • Sageville

            LOL!

        • Kensei Seraph

I found a floppy underneath my bed the other day, does that count?

          • Mossel

Underneath your bed? What’s on the floppy…cmon you can tell us.

          • Kensei Seraph

            No idea.
I don’t have a floppy drive and have never even used one before.

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            Dude overshare… OVERSHARE!!!

        • Kromas

I own 2 fully working 486 DX66’s for exclusive warcraft lan games and sometimes older 4X games.

      • Hammersteyn

No, we hate for a lot more than simply being EA

      • Sith JJ

Agreed. I personally don’t feel strongly about any EA game, so generally won’t buy it. But if it were something that I am a complete fanboy of, I could probably get around while using Origin.

        • Dutch Matrix

My Origin experience of late is not one that is all that bad. Recently I bought Mass Effect, ME2, Kingdoms of Amalur and another game for something insane like $5.00. I downloaded Origin, installed, entered my details and boom! Logged in, games downloaded, having fun all around.
Steam? THE EXACT SAME THING without the EA label.

          • Sith JJ

I have SimCity and Dead Space 3 (which I got for free with SimCity) on my Origin. Haven’t bought anything EA since.

      • The_aQuato

I get the whole “we hate EA thing” and I agree on a lot of it, but still, they’re a platform to play games on and isn’t that after all what we want to do?

        • Sith JJ

I can agree with that, but I just cannot give EA the satisfaction of a single one of my Randelas. That’s why they keep doing what they’re doing.

          • The_aQuato

I just tell myself I’m supporting BioWare… It softens the blow a little

          • Sith JJ

            Haha. True.

        • Dutch Matrix

I am kind of hating EA for what they are doing to the Sims 4. No pools and already got 3 stuff packs lined up. Could you please, at least just lubricate my bum before having your way with me?
But do I now go an boycott EA for everything they do? No. The answer is simple. If you do not like what EA does to a certain game, then do not buy that game. Let your wallet do the voting. If they see we don’t buy into their Microtransaction BS, then it would make business sense for them to stop doing that.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Actually that’s precisely why I boycott EA. Their shitty business practices that affect ALL their games. And they’ll never stop because people can’t live without their games.

          • Sith JJ

I agree. What they’re doing with the Sims 4 is shocking, but not surprising (knowing EA)
I for one just generally don’t support EA as a whole because we remain in the minority here, as most people will buy the games regardless of what it has or doesn’t have.

          • Dutch Matrix

The Sims games have always been a game about the extras. Even from The Sims 1 days you could easily add your own paintings, Sims and the like to the game. And it was a blast.
But the thing that got me worried about The Sims 4 is that I get the idea I am going to be buying half a game.
So I will wait for the reviews to come in, at the very least. If they say good game and good value for money out of the box, then I am in. If not… EA can kiss my lily white ass…

    • Sith JJ

Not all people are like you.
But I feel strongly enough about it to just not bother getting the game.

    • Mossel

100% with you. Dont get the hate on Origin. I prefer it if all my Mass Effect, Battlefield and Dragon Age games are in one place.

  • Hammersteyn

But surely there are advantages to using Origin, other than being able to play EA games or than scanning your files on your PC I suppose.

  • Morne Nell

    Console only, hate origin.

    • Hammersteyn

Buying it second hand, hate EA

      • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Same for me. Anything that comes from EA has been boycotted, I will only bother if they’re in a used bin.

        • Hammersteyn

used bin, perfect analogy for what EA did with companies like Westwood and Bullfrog.

          • Chris Pelham

FUCK don’t remind me dammit. Oh nox and dungeon keeper how i loved you so.

          • Hammersteyn

Nox was awesome, didn’t deserve just the one game in the series

  • Jackie

i guess im the only one here that tollerates Origin, only because Steam scares the ducks ouda me.

    • Morne Nell

I wonder how long steam will last, think a lot of developers hate them

      • Matthew Holliday

dont think many hate them, but they all wanna be like them.
theyv all made their own versions of it atleast.

  • Matthew Holliday

    meh.
had to get used to it for battlefield and mass effect anyway.
    ./care

  • Kensei Seraph

I’ll still get it on PC as all the other Dragon Age games I own are already on PC and it will probably be R200,00 cheaper on the PC (although i might need to spend more than that on upgrades).
The only difference it being on Origin makes is that I will wait a few weeks so that the Origin servers can recover from the surge of people trying to redeem their game (facking DRM).

  • Morne Nell

The problem with Origin is we never know if the problem is with the game or with Origin. My experience with Origin is that it is not stable and I had a constant line drop / disconnection issues.
Games such as Sim city would tell you the connection with Origin was lost, then kicks you out of the game. So was this an Origin or Sim city issue.

  • Kerrits

    I don’t mind.
I actually prefer the Origin UI to that of Steam. It is also more responsive than Steam where the UI sometimes just freeze for a while.

  • Mark Treloar

So a lot of this article is directed at Steam and Origin not playing well together. Will we ses a similar article for Far Cry 4?

    • Kensei Seraph

No, that article will lambaste how Uplay needs to be running in addition to Steam and how this is a waste of system resources.

  • Johann

Truth be told I have no problem with it being on Origin but maybe that’s because I’m one of the few lucky ones that haven’t had any issues with Origin thus far.

Would love to have it on console, but first I need to get the new PS4 or Xbone. Sadly I have a bit of saving left to do.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

EA still pushing the One and Done as their preferred platform of choice.

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Oh, I feel silly for only just noticing the good photoshop job Zoe :D

  • Rags

TBH I am starting to like Origin more than Steam. Steam achievements and trading cards are just part of the bloated fluff I can do without. Sure Origin has caused so much frustration over the years, but so has Steam in its early days and Origin is really starting to mature and become a lot more stable. I am perfectly fine with this.

  • https://twitter.com/andreferhelst Aries

Guess thats what you get for playing games on a mac

  • Dutch Matrix

Dear Steam fanbois. Please explain why currently my steam download is hovering at 50.3 KB/s and yet origin clocks a download at 200 KB/S?

    • Johan du Preez

Stop streaming gay donkey porn :P. On a serious note if you go into steam-> options -> Downloads you can change the download server there. You will notice there is allot of South African options. I personally use the Romania server as I always get full speed from there. The South African servers are wonkey to say the least.

      • Dutch Matrix

I will let you know that I stream Gay porcupine porn! I have standards you know???!!!!
Butt sorry but thanks for the tip!

  • Simon

Unfortunately I have no choice as I belong to the master race and I desperately want the game , but I will recount a recent tale of EA not giving a flying **** for their customers:

For long I have been searching for a hard copy of Mass Effect 3 in stores to no avail one trip to Kalahari later a copy would arrive in 12 working days, true as bob it arrived I hastened to install it went through the activation process but upon activation it would only give me the option to download not install, a precursory look on the forums told me this bug has existed at launch and still not fixed, some suggested calling EA help and ask for a new code, I followed this advice and still had the same problem. It was suggested that the problem occurred when using a copy of the game that came from another market. I examined the disc and found out that it was the british version, a second call to EA later and them ensuring me that both codes (original and regenerated) were not region locked nor for digital versions of the game I was flummoxed the poor guy could help me no longer he directed me to a few forum posts that suggested outlandish solutions. I tried one (involving starting the download (deleting downloaded files while keeping folder structure, unpack the game disks and copy across then resume the download so it can fix the install) it worked but I am still amazed that a game nearly two years old has not had this bug fixed by EA.

I just hope the same doesn’t happen come october as my pre order is with Kalahari

    many apologies for the rant

  • RedJoker

This is sort of like pointing out the obvious…
Did anyone expect it to be any other way? It’s not like you play fifa on steam…

  • Johan du Preez

Already knew we have to use Origin hence why I am skipping this and getting The Witcher 3

  • Chris Pelham

i already skipped DA2 because it wasn’t coming to steam like the original(which i love), oh well another purchase down the drain.

  • Chris Pelham

I thought origin was dead ironically, how is GFWL?
