Yesterday, Dragon Age: Inquisition stats about how many dragons have been killed were interesting, and gave me a reason to share some of my tips and tricks for killing the dragons scattered around the world. Here’s a new infographic, but I’m rather surprised by it.
According to the infographic, 68% of inquisitors created have been male. I really do find this surprising considering the majority of people I’ve spoken to about their experience with the game have played with female inquisitors. I’m on my second play through and both of my inquisitors have been female. The majority of videos that I’ve seen also include female inquisitors – it’s all quite surprising to me that there are so many secret male inquisitors. I guess it’s just for all those players who want to romance Cassandra.
I find it weird how much more open-minded PC gamers apparently must be considering their tendency towards female inquisitors. It’s rather amusing to me that Xbox One is the most misogynistic console. The PS4 appears to be a bit more woman-friendly than Xbox One, but I’ll relate that to people wanting pretty pictures of ladies and we know how out of focus Dragon Age: Inquisition looks running at 900p compared to 1080p.
I haven’t seen videos of Dragon Age: Inquisition on old generation consoles. Does it look bad? That game is so gorgeous on PS4 and PC, I think I’d be far too sad to see it downgraded so far on the older consoles. Also, I’m amazed that they would be able to fit so much content on the old generation consoles – the world is massive and filled with all kinds of quests and decisions. I can’t imagine that the older consoles can handle that much information. Either way, I’m glad the older generation players are letting a female character rule the world – I’m just surprised at how many are choosing male inquisitors. Don’t most people play with female Shepard in Mass Effect? Why is it different for Dragon Age?
Have you been playing the game? What have your inquisitors been? My first inquisitor was a female dwarf rogue. This time, I’m playing as a female Qunari mage.

It sure is… One would think there would be more female chars made because the higher number of players are male and there is a extra relationship storyline being female. But then again this game doesn’t have boob physics so yeah.

I don’t know, if I have a choice I always play as a male. Only because I can relate to the character better that way and I like playing as a male. Could just be people like playing a men also?

Yeah me too when given a choice although I do like going back and trying a female character on playthrough 2 up e.g. Borderlands I want to play as Siren; and ONE day play as the female mage character in Demon’s Souls.
Mandom (Umar)
January 16, 2015 at 10:13
Well Borderlands was different, she was a unique character. I picked here because of her powers. In these games, the gender options are , well for the most part, inconsequential and is more related to personal preference

i struggle with female playthroughs. In mass effect, I ALWAYS ended up romancing Liara, because the idea of romancing any of the male crew was oddly disconcerting.
the more I got into mass effect, the harder it became to romance a bro…
Mandom (Umar)
January 16, 2015 at 10:21
Yeah, it always boils down to personal preference. I personally don’t feel it has anything to do with being open-minded. If I’m playing a 70 hour RPG, I wana play as someone I feel comfortable/enjoy playing as.

I hardly ever pick the female gender. Especially RPG games. I want to have a hulking monster with a huge weapon decimate enemies. Like Conan. People pick female characters in FPS games though. Smaller avatar means smaller target. though the head size are still the same so that doesn’t save them from headshots
ToshZA
January 16, 2015 at 10:18
I actually always pick a female. I just can’t relate to that ‘big brawny’ stereotype at all. And let’s be honest, they’re either ‘do you even lift bro?’ or ‘hey baby, I’m god’s gift to women’.
Urgh.

Like a downwards pointing triangle with legs and arms.
The female characters at least looked human.

To be honest: I always went for the burly male stereotype myself. Then Mass Effect happened, and the promise of Lesbian Alien sex was dangled before me.
Then Jennifer Hale happened. And boy, did she ever impress me with Femshep’s amazing, amazing character.
Ever since then, I have fallen in love with the strong female character.

Captain JJ Saga
January 16, 2015 at 10:23
I also got DA:O and the Wing Commander series for free. I got Dead Space 3 for free with my last gfx card. So the only thing on my Origin account that I actually bought is SimCity, and it was disappointing enough.
That ME collection is looking very appealing though, especially since I haven’t played it yet.

I don’t think I’ve ever opted to play as a woman where I had the option. I tend to like creating a character resembling me just a bit. For immersion and all.
The fact that I play as Coach in Left For Dead 2 doesn’t quite fortify this claim though.

Brady miaau
January 16, 2015 at 10:33
I do not, as a rule, like dwarfs or hobbits and orcs as player characters for me. I am old School AD&D, even D&D rules I know.
Human or Elf. That is sort of it.
Blood Emperor Trevor
January 16, 2015 at 10:35
If only basic options were available I almost always went human. I used to love the chance to play weirder races, like thri-kreen once.
Brady miaau
January 16, 2015 at 10:37
I am still biased because in original D&D rules, elfs did have a class but were just fighter mages. So I tend to go that route with an elf, in games.
And it is amazing how many games, even DA:I, uses principles of character creation stemming from D&D and AD&D. Such as the human “non specialist” and so forth.
Blood Emperor Trevor
January 16, 2015 at 10:38

I would create a male…to romance Cassandra. What was cool in DA2 was my femHawk could romance Isabella. I mix the genders and races on my RPG characters if I have the choice. ME I have 2 males and 1 female. DA1 I had a male warrior human, Elf female rogue, male Dwarf warrior. DA2 only finished with my femHawk. I mix it to see those slight changes in dialogue and experience. Bewbs

Well this article brings a few thoughts to mind . .. first is, who cares? I mean, this whole gender in gaming conversation has gotten so old t me. I really don’t care what most women think about their representation in gaming. There happens to be real world issues in 3rd world countries that should require our attention first. Secondly, why the use of the word misogyny? Where does hating women come in to this at all? Thirdly, Do women ever play as male characters? Cuz I often play as female characters and I always wondered if women play as males . . .
