Hotline Miami 2 creators fire back at Australian ban

Despite having an adults-only rating, there are still some games that the Australian classification board simply won’t touch with a ten foot pole. Yesterday that happened to be Hotline Miami 2, after a particularly graphic sexual assault scene got the game banned in Australia. That’s fine with the creators though, who suggest piracy as a means to still play the game.

Jonatan Söderströmm, co-creator of Hotline Miami, has stated that any Australians wanting to play Hotline Miami have full permission to pirate the game.

“If it ends up not being released in Australia,” he wrote, “just pirate it after release. No need to send us any money, just enjoy the game!”

This response came after an Australian fan directly emailed Söderströmm to ask about other ways to obtain a copy now that it had been banned down under.

Developers Dennaton Games and publisher Devolver Digital have no plans to appeal the Australian Ratings Board decision, but are quick to point out that the decision to ban the game was wrong, and that the scene in question has been grossly misinterpreted. Firstly, players are given the option to skip the scene at the beginning of the game, similar to the “No Russian” mission in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare 2.

Devolver also feels that the ratings board stretched the facts in terms of what the scene actually depicted

First, to clear up any possible misconceptions, the opening cinematic that was first shown in June of 2013 has not changed in any way. We also want to make clear that players are given a choice at the start of the game as to whether they wish to avoid content that alludes to sexual violence. The sequence in question is presented below in context, both after choosing the uncut version of the game and after choosing to avoid content that alludes to sexual violence.

Second, in response to the report itself, we are concerned and disappointed that a board of professionals tasked with evaluating and judging games fairly and honestly would stretch the facts to such a degree and issue a report that describes specific thrusting actions that are not simply present in the sequence in question and incorrectly portrays what was presented to them for review.

An extract from the Ratings Board description of the scene implies a lot more detail

He is viewed pinning the female down by the arms and lying on top of her thrusting, implicitly raping her (either rear entry or anally) while her legs are viewed kicking as she struggles beneath him.

Devolver also supplied a video of the scene in question, showing how it plays out when players choose to either view the extreme content or not. Viewer discretion is advised.

Now the scene is still incredible disturbing, but I can see where Devolver and Dennaton are coming from. Its wholly lacking much of the detail that the Australian Ratings Board describes, which makes you wonder if they actually classified the game correctly. I still wouldn’t hold them against a ban for the content above, but at the very least the report must be accurate and fair.

Either way, it doesn’t look like it’ll be that hard for any Australian to get their hands on Hotline Miami 2, which is apparently coming out “very soon”.

It’s a movie set. How many times has rape been far more explicitly shown in a movie?

I can’t recall one time where the character you’re supposed to be rooting for in a movie has raped someone, and you’re just supposed to forget it happens.

My point is this: do you hate the actors that rape a woman within a movie – outside of that movie? Do those movies get banned for those rape scenes? No.

So what the eff is up with all this furore over a few pixels that are far LESS graphic.

The difference is agency. In a movie you’re watching the actor perform the action, in this game you are the one performing the action. In this case the action is rape, an action that has no good reason in the world. “It’s not real” doesn’t really matter.

It’s just a cutscene, on a movie set. You lose control of the character at the point you approach the woman. It’s not a choice, you have no agency. Your choice comes in at the start of the game – are you sensitive to that? Yes? Then block the content. That option was added, from what I can tell, just for that scene…

So it is your character performing the action then? That doesn’t invalidate my point about agency. The fact that they’ve added that option is great. Also great is the extra context they provided for how it all came about, which shows more nuance. This was brought up months ago when it first came to light.

I know it was – and I had the same opinion back then. It’s just entertainment. And honestly, this is far less worrisome to me than most of the music videos I see on TV these days. An 8 year old can watch those without any issues or obstacles… But an adult gets banned from playing what is simply a few pixels in a game that is inherently wrought with graphic and violent murder sprees? It makes no sense to me, whatsoever.

Good for them. I like this Dev.
Considering what type of game it is and the story it follow, you can expect some things to make people uncomfortable. No reason to ban it though.

I get why they said this, but it’s a slippery slope to walk on. You cannot have one developer promoting piracy and the rest telling people it is wrong. I’ts like me telling my boy he can swear some times.

Keep in mind: Australians cannot get the game legitimately. So it is not like they will be losing out on Australian sales, as they’ll be getting none…

But even if a game is not released locally there is always a way to get the game legally. Just look at Titanfall in SA.

Just because a man living on the street have no means of getting a TV legally does not give him the right to steal one.

Fair point, but like Raptor said in another comment now they cannot blame anyone if they pirate the game.
And if I was a company trying to tell everyone that piracy is wrong, and these guys come along and tell people to go ahead and pirate I would be a little pissed off.

Look. I am not a sheep. If the Australians can get it for free. Good. I, as a South African citizen, knows that the free game is not meant for me. So if I want it, I will buy it. Because Piracy is Wrong!
And face it: People outside Australia, who wants to pirate the game will pirate the game.

          • Fnuik

            January 16, 2015 at 09:36

Yes I get that. What I am trying to say is that most people on earth are unfortunately sheep (see the iphone 🙂 ). So when one person tells them not to pirate cause its wrong, and another tells them to go ahead, 99% will go for the free option, even if they could buy it.

PS, if you have a iphone I did not mean to call you a sheep…

God, the Aussie board needs to catch a wake up. I’ve seen far worse in 16 rated movies than this. I’m sure there are 13 rated movies with more graphic content than that, sexually.

    What a bunch of fappaccinos.

Listen to this man. He knows what he is talking about.

Not quite the same but piracy is often used when content is not made available in countries. The piracy = lose sales, is a stupid notion taught by the music industry. Piracy = thief, is a stupid notion taught by the movie industry. Just don’t be fucking stupid.

“What you actually doing is advertising. You’re reaching more people. You raising awareness. Understanding that will give you a whole new idea of the shape of copyright and what the web is doing because the biggest thing the web is doing is allowing people to hear things, allowing people to read things, allowing people to see things, that they would never otherwise would have seen. And basically that’s an incredibly good thing. “
