Deus Ex: The Fall disables guns on jailbroken iOS devices

soup-nazi

The latest Deus Ex game was released yesterday, amidst a sea of players dropping the inevitable “I didn’t ask for this!” quotes. See Deus Ex: The Fall may feature cyber-hacking, but it has a problem with that idea in the real world.

If you happen to own a jailbroken iPad or iPhone, then Square Enix has some bad news for you. Deus Ex: The Fall can detect such illicit homebrewin’ and then automatically react by stripping the game of an important asset. The guns. Redditor KipEnyan via Kotaku encountered the issue, where he was caught unawares by the anti-piracy measure. And for the most part, I agree with what Eidos has done. They are protecting their game after all from software pirates.

But the anti-piracy feature does not distinguish between thieves and people who actually paid for the game and are running jailbroken devices. If you slapped down $6.99 for the game then you’re out of luck. No guns for you. And the thing is, there’s nothing illegal with the act of jailbreaking. Sure, I’d be completely mental to ignore the fact that most of it leads to illegal activities by the terms of your Apple agreement, but that’s like getting a speeding fine for sitting in a car that is idle.

“$7 for a game that doesn’t work on jail broken devices. No warning in App Store description,” read one user review for the app. Guess they’ll have to start calling this game Deus Ex: The Fail. YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!

SE does this wih all their games. on android if it detects that your phone is rooted it won’t work. while I agree with this and like this type of anti pirate measures, you can’t block a user that has done nothing wrong. at the very least give a warning square.

And if the phone is jailbroken but not being used to pirate? And if the person paid for the app?

Some people root their Samsung mobiles so they can take control of the notification LED functions or just to be able to install better battery apps which require root access. So these guys and girls also get nailed?

I don’t actually agree with this level of DRM.

No I agree with this DRM on a console and PC level, embedded code, not like this,as you can’t distinguish between the real pirates and legit customers

Ok but how do you implement on PC? You can’t “jailbreak” or “root” a pc like this as their is no way.

I can understand on console, but then again, a console that is chipped to run a custom ROM is the same thing as mobiles Yes, mostly it is so the person can pirate but there are those who do it so they have better or more dedicated functionality from the device. As long as the device doesn’t try to access online features in that state no one can really complain and then claim that person is a pirate can they?

certain versions of PS3 Sony allowed you replace the standard OS with Linux version.

Precisely. This DRM would pick up it isn’t the original firmware and BAM!

A FPS with no guns, An RPG with no XP points, a racing game with no ability to turn left! Lol

Nope, not device specific, but the actual game. Serious Sam 3 has an unstoppable monster that kills you if the game itself has been pirated

            July 12, 2013 at 09:25

Yes and that is usually good (Just like Crysis3 has an unstopable boss battle near the end)

BUT, the DRM cannot be hardware or OS based like this DRM is because there are too many variables. DRM based on your system OS hardware or state are treading dangerous waters of conformity where no one will be allowed to have mixed systems.

DRM based on inspecting the game code itself to see if the EXE file or anything else has been changed is fine however.

Well then I apologize, should have been specific, I do not agree with Device Specific DRM, there is just no way to know really who is a real pirate , but software specifc DRM is much better than the current DRM that is implemented, embedded code for the actual game is great as you know without a doubt that that person is a pirate… See we are on the same page, best buddy time

            July 12, 2013 at 10:48

Sadly no. Even with No killing I cannot save her. Stop trying after the 15th time. Then I whip out my sniper and kill em all.

Funny thing, I carried that heavy ass sniper rifle through one of my playthroughs and ONLY SHOT 3 bullets. What a waste hahaha

          • Brady miaau

            July 12, 2013 at 10:54

I did the same, did not use the sniper rifle but still carried it. Just in case

By the way, even with silly boss fights, I rank Deus Ex HR in my top 5 games played. Ever.

            Agreed. Very much agreed.

It basically started with me with the first DX. I really immersed myself there. Got hooked totally. Then DX2 came and stuffed me up a bit, but also enjoyed it.

Got DX1 again later on with a mod that gives you XP like DXHR (totally awesome)

Then Pre-ordered DXHR and loved the hell out of it. Got new GFX and revisited it on Ultra. OH LAWDS.

Really epic game. Glad we feel the same!

I tried it on 3d on my laptop, but could not play 3d (I suppose I dislike 3d), but then just got on Xbox sale. I really prefer that to PC.

I got DX1 (never played or seen it before) on Gog.com, but cannot get it to look nice on my win7 64 bit. The graphics are terrible, the colours are all wrong and stuff. When I have some downtime, I will play with settings.

Dx2 I will get not get, do not see the point now.

I think apple should look at how restrictive their policies are. THEY force people to jailbreak devices with their ultimate levels of control over what you can do with THEIR device, you paid for.

            Or so I am told.

People do not kill people, gun kill people.

Sigh. Yet again another example of how DRM is detrimental to real users.

Yes, Jailbreaking is usually for piracy reasons but there are other people who do it just so they can do some fancy things with their phones that stock roms don’t allow. Now these people are treated unfairly because they like tinkering with their gadgets? Honestly?

Developers/publishers/suits catch a wake up and realise you are alienating your legitimate clients with your shenanigans!

I do agree with you , but I think this is a smart type of DRM, embedded in the game, instead of forcing and internet connection and making legitimate customers feel like thieves, embed game breaking code for the pirates. while this hold true though for console games , this type of DRM on mobile is unfair as there is no way to distinguish between real pirates and people who like modding their phone

They probably report the offending phone with all GPS tracking data, browser history, photos and twitter feed to the NSA, because only pirates and terrorists use phones that are jailbreaked.
