Destiny is looting how much HDD space?

A while back Geoff told us how much space we could expect Destiny to hog on your PS4’s HDD. Now there are leaks regarding the size of the game on Xbox One and it’s… as we expected.

Destiny is almost upon us, and the leaks have begun. According to a user on Imgur who decided to take pictures with a potato, some Xbox One discs have already emerged in the wild. The back of the box says that the game will require 40GB of hard disc space, the exact same amount of space it will require on PS4. See, the two consoles do have a bunch in common.

The pre-load download for Xbox One is “only” 19GB of that, which makes sense considering that Xbox One can usually let you start playing games once you reach the 50% download mark – the rest will download in the background while you run around having fun. Still, for those of you planning to download Destiny instead of buying a disc, prepare for some rather large downloads. I’m also curious how big the day one patch will be – like most things, it has become the norm seeing as developers really don’t need to stop working on the game once discs are pressed.

Meanwhile, in the latest dev blog, Bungie has finally revealed a bit more about how loot will work, something about which Gavin had some serious concerns:

The loot you get is private to you – just like the rest of the game.

Obtaining loot from a given encounter means that character is not eligible to receive loot from the same encounter again in a given calendar week. This is often referred to as a “Lockout.”

I italicized “character” above, because if you have multiple Raid-ready characters, you can run the Raid again on a different character – and the Lockout isn’t applied to it.

Each encounter has a fixed inventory of items it can award to players, e.g., certain pieces of gear or weapons can only drop from certain encounters.

Lockouts are cleared at the Weekly Reset.

The weekly reset is each Tuesday, so you can happily go farming every weekend, it seems. I like this approach as it should mean people are engaging with a whole variety of the game instead of just repeating the same encounters over and over again in the hopes of getting epic loot.

If your hype building for Destiny or have you already forgotten how much fun you had in the Beta? Or are you still part of the PC brigade that is (not so quietly) crying because they will be excluded from all the fun?

I like a good MMO now and then but like a Japanese in an S&M club there is a twist. I pretty much switch games once a month.

Well … BF + all expansions … so technically sort of true. Also BF4 counts as a NAMAASMMOBSRMM*. 😛

Six months ago I lost my job and after that I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a great website which literally saved me. I started working for them online and in a short time after I’ve started averaging 15k a month… The best thing was that cause I am not that computer savvy all I needed was some basic typing skills and internet access to start… This is where to starthttp://www.onlinejob/2014/7/9……,,,..

Wondering when we can expect new(current) gen consoles with current sized HDDs.

But then again, the rest of the hardware is already years behind PC, so it would make sense to have HDD that’s years behind as well. 😛

Well that depends on your definition of current. Current SSD’s sit at 128-256gb where as old mechanical drives sit at 3-4 TB. Then again you want that drive to be fast so let us assume current means SSD.

Good thing a PC can hold more than one drive. 😛

It is a good thing. But then again WD Red 6TB for around 3K or even a hybrid 2TB for 1300 would be so much better than a 500GB

I was talking about consumer markets. I mean there is already a 1TB SSD availible plus ofc the hybrid drives etc etc but people tend to buy 3-4TB mechanical and 128-256GB SSD.

Very true, but if you’re building an un-customizable box that has to last around 5 years it makes no sense to have such a small HDD.

While I am starting to become less shocked about game sizes lately I am starting to worry about console owners. With game sizes increasing so rapidly will 500GB really be enough? Having to uninstall and install games because you are out of space is exactly what consoles are meant to avoid?

I’d hate to run games from an external. The load times would be absolutely terrible. USB is not made for that kind of data transfer

The simple solution would be to keep the games you play the most often on the HDD and move the older stuff you don’t play as much to the external. Leave about 50GB of space on the HDD so you can move something off the external to the HDD if you want to play it then move it back when you’re done. This way you never will have to deal with reduced speed when playing any games

But then you need to wait for the data to copy over etc. Now you are doing disc space management. This is one of the things a console is supposed to stop.

Wouldn’t it be fast to switch the data over I can’t believe it would take anywhere near as long as downloading the game all over again would be.

It would be better to just have bigger base drives. That’s the point I am trying to get across. 2TB would be a good point to start.

That’s true. Better yet they should have made drives removable and upgradeable like they were last gen. The special edition COD Xbox One will come with a 1TB drive which is an improvement. Hopefully in the future when they come out with a slim model for the console they will throw in a bigger drive as standard.

It’s not thay bad dude… it just means you can’t rerun the same raid with the same character. You can rerun it with another one though… we will be able to play as 3 different characters like we could in the beta.

Yeah, I saw in the notes posted above, but if I wanted to focus on just one character, I don’t want to wait a week for the loot I want, it’s a time-sink mechanism, that this game doesn’t need as there’s no monthly subscription.

It’s not a time-sink mechanism in Destiny. The best loot in the game is found in the weekly raids… The lockouts balance it so that people don’t grind it for an unfar advantage.

The raids require you to invite 5 friends to your team/raid group, as there is no matchmaking feature for this content (which is another feature that has it’s own pros and cons). Let’s for argument’s sake say that you got your loot for the week, would YOU be favourably disposed to participate in the raid again? Even if you didn’t get drops at the end of the raid due to the weekly lockout, there must be some form of compensation in the form of Marks, that can be traded-in at equipment vendors. FFXIV has employed a system that rewards redoing raids so that less-skilled or new players can clear the raid. I sincerely hope that Bungie takes notes from Square-Enix in this regard.

            September 5, 2014 at 17:16

You’ve got a point there I suppose. I can’t imagine that people would do the raid more than 3 times though considering how tough they supposed to be and the fact that you need to complete them with friends only which I assume will mean that if you quit the raid halfway through it because one friend has to go to bed early for work in the morning or something you can’t just pick up where you left off with a different friend… it would have to be THAT same friend I imagine.

But you still have 3 characters you can use to redo raids, so I don’t see the lockouts as that big of a deal. I plan on having one character of each class and trying to complete a new raid every week with all 3 characters if I can so I can get the best loot for all 3 classes from those raids. That’s enough for me. There’s plenty more with the regular missions and strikes to keep you busy. So I doubt people will even have time to complete raids more than 3 times a week.

Unless there will be more to install on day one pre-ordered and pre-loaded Destiny on Xbox One and it only took up 19GB in total. However that’s just for the game. I pre-ordered the Digital Guardian Edition which includes 2 DLC packs that of course aren’t available yet so those didn’t get downloaded. Neither did the Vanguard Armory which I assume will download on Day One. So where this other 20GB of data will come from I guess we’ll find out when the game launchess.
