Destiny is going to be huge

The Destiny Beta is now done and dusted, and many of you will be suffering bouts of withdrawal as you wait for the game’s September release. Though I didn’t get to play it nearly as much as I’d hoped, I rather enjoyed the small sample of the game’s final content on offer. Just how much content will there be in the final game though? According to information data-mined from the beta, quite a bit.

According to the datamining, Destiny will contain at least 22 single player missions set over 5 explorable areas. The game will also host a number of the co-op Strike missions,  plus one or two giant raids.

“There are 23 known story missions, 8 unknown and 1 mission are the credits. For the strike there are 5 nightfall missions, 6 normal missions, 4 vanguard missions and the rest are duplicate. I have a feeling that the nightfall missions are the regular missions during the night although I can’t confirm this at all,” says the chaps behind DestinyDB

That all ends up being quite a bit of content. What’s interesting though, is that Bungie seems to have confirmed that each planet will only have one explorable region – meaning that Old Russia is possibly all we get to see of a fallen Earth. That shouldn’t dissuade you though. What you got to play in the beta is little more than a tease. Responding to fans on neoGAF, Eric Osborne, Community Manager at Bungie, said the game is pretty huge.

Destiny’s pretty big. It’s the biggest game we’ve ever made, by far, and we’re sort of known for making games you can play for months, years, and even decades if you’re a little bit…dedicated.

With Destiny, we’re looking to exceed what we’ve done before, not just in terms of scale – the Moon is our smallest destination – but in terms of scope and breadth of activities. That’s true for day one, as you expect, but it also means we want Destiny to have super long legs.
If we’re fortunate enough to have you playing months after launch, you still find lots of compelling stuff to do. That will manifest itself in a myriad of ways, from straight up content to cool activities we’ve yet to show off.

We think we did a decent job supporting Halo, post launch, but we were only ever able to cater to the competitive set. That left a lot of players out in the cold. That made a lot of the team grumpy. We wanted to do better. So, Destiny is philosophically built support every type of player, and all modes with ongoing activities and events. We look at it quite a bit like television programming, as opposed to a singular film, as we had in the past. We think it’s gonna be pretty great, but we wanted to test out a bunch of our new stuff with Beta, to make sure we could flip knobs and levers live, reacting and responding with lots (and, ho boy, did we see LOTS) of players online and playing.

Beta was water wings. Level 8 is nothing. You barely scratched the surface, and it seems like some folks had fun with what was there.

If you did, good news. More soon.

Did you play the beta at all? Has it got you convinced, or do you still just not get the hype?

Played SP till got to the Level 8 beta cap, did the Strike co-op mission, don’t really see what all the hype is about. Seems to be just another FPS, with some customisation elements (mainly to keep you playing).

Apparently the “demo” was 10% of the entire game. Seems small IMO.

18,5 hours and I finished every mission except the Moon mission on hard and played about 5 hours PvP.
So more accurately it would probably be 200 hours.

Cool. 200 hours for your R800. Vs a movie ticket, at R80 per person, for an hour. Or other 15 hour games, same cost as the 200 hours. Yeah I’m sorry, I don’t buy the “small”.

I agree and who has the time to play that long when we all have lives to lead lol The Witcher 2 was long enough for me as well as the Mass Effect games lol so this to me is bordering on too long, but then again there are plenty of much more hardcore gamers who loves to live on these games longer than real life.

    I enjoyed the beta.
The PvP was a lot of fun but honestly the Titans seemed a little overpowered.
Virtually impossible to kill and a high-damage AOE skill that can wipe entire squads out in 1 strike.
Warlocks aren’t nearly as strong but their super is basically a longer ranged version of the Titans that has wiped my entire squad out in 1 cast.
Hunters, while fun, seem to be the weakest of the 3 classes.
The Hunter super only allows you to kill 3 people as opposed to the potential 6 of the other 2 classes. It does have the longest range though, although most of the combat happens within shotgun range so that makes very little difference.

            I’m more of a 4 vs 4, CQC player, so I didn’t enjoy it.
Was a bit too battlefield-y for my tastes.
The other maps were great though.
Yeah, the campers got quite annoying. Hated those dudes camping at a turret by of the bases.

Speaking of vehicles, that Interceptor was way overpowered.
And yes, loved destroying them too, especially with a well placed nova bomb from my warlock 😉

I finally got an upgrade with the hunter where if you shoot the gun and hit one guy it can jump to others… Didn’t get time to test it out though, but that should get them even with the others I think… But I liked playing with the Titan way more than the Hunter!!

I never got an upgrade like that, in fact I don’t remember any upgrades like that at all.
The closest I can remember is the one that allows your shots to penetrate multiple targets, but honestly what are the chances that the enemy will line up nicely for you to shoot them especially when it takes 4 assault rifle shots to kill you.

I like it, although there was the one time a Titan dodged behind cover as I used my super and I just shot next to where he’d moved and got the kill.
I didn’t even hit him and he died which was kinda weird.

The aim assist is more of a tracking assist than true aim assist.
It works pretty nicely though, except for the sniper where it doesn’t seem to work at all.

I think a lot of the guys in pvp were old halo stalwarts who were waiting for something new from bungie. That’s why I think the skill level was a bit higher than usual.

I do know that a whole bunch of old halo pro players were playing/streaming the beta almost everyday.

I bet Bungie makes a PVP mode with no super powers. That way the elite can’t die cheaply

I think a lot of the guys in pvp were old halo stalwarts who were waiting for something new from bungie. That’s why I think the skill level was a bit higher than usual.

I do know that a whole bunch of old halo pro players were playing/streaming the beta almost everyday.

I wasn’t all that impressed. Beta saved me sixty bucks come September though, so little victories.

This game will be huge!! I again had tons of fun!! Got a bit bored by Sunday, but I played the Alpha and 41 hours in the beta… Will be there come September, and I am so happy with it that it will be my first big release that I buy digital!!

I do hope that when the game releases they’d stop using Moon Base as a Pvp map.. I’m rather tired of just that lame moon base by now.

There were 2 other maps in the rotation.
It was something like 65% Moon, 30% Venus and 5% the other that I only played 3 matches on.

It’s not such a bad map.
Just cap B and jump in the turret and you can hold it for the entire game solo.
As long as the rest of your team is able to give a half-decent fight and none of the enemies figure out that turrets can’t aim straight up you’ll win.

Nope, when you go down into the tower you get the crucible dude on the right and on the left is a lady. You could give her your spinmetal(40 of the to be precise). It increased all your armour and all your weapons, or that is what it said….

Those enemies was put in certain places to stop you from going in there or around there!! I found tons of them, but I really went all explorer on the games ass!! I went everywhere that I possible could!! I found at least 5 places with those ?? enemies. They were immune to all attacks, so Bungie didn’t give you a chance because they didn’t want you to go in there for some reason!! Those areas are the ones I will visit first as soon as the game launches, very curious to see what is in there!!

I enjoyed the beta… found some of the missions long winded, and that “ghost” rather irritating… but I solo’d it all, twice.

The PVP took a bit of getting used to, was battling with k/d ratios of 0.3 at the start, but to my absolute shock, I started averaging a k/d ratio (on a throttled 2mbps line) of 1.5-2 per 3 matches.

But yeah, some people were crazy good in PVP, killing 5 guys in a row, not dying, killing you in seconds… it was crazy… but still fun.

I ended up just short of lvl 9 last night when I just shut off and played Lego Batman 2.

I think the longevity of the game will rely heavily upon dlc and additional content. Lets hope it doesn’t go microtrans tho.

I really was looking forward to Destiny being released….
Then I played the Beta and became sad and disappointed. It looks good, but the gameplay is boring as hell. Don’t believe me? play Titanfall and switch to Destiny… switch back again… you’ll see what
    TITANFALLLLLL 🙂 all the way.
