Dead Rising 3’s frame rate issues persist

Right now, Dead Rising 3 is just about the only launch period exclusive (along with Peggle 2!) that’s getting me excited for Microsoft’s Xbox One. When I first saw it at E3 and later played it at Gamescom, it suffered from some pretty jarring frame-rate issues. At a more recent build at our own rAge though, it was rough around the edges, but buttery smooth. Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry got to test an even newer build…and it seems the frame rate issues are back.

Their capture demonstrated that the game was rendered at 720p, upscaled to 1080p – which wasn’t very kind on thin lines and made the whole thing look jaggy and rough – but more disconcerting was the frame-rate.

Despite a promised, locked 30 frames per second Eurogamer found it to average closer to 20fps – and in some instances drop as low as 16fps.

The statement from the team is that a locked 30fps is targeted here, but in the build we saw there’s a huge gap to be bridged in this regard; drops to 20fps are consistent and sustained when outdoors, with 16fps being our record low during some of the biggest explosions. With Battlefield 4 on Xbox One, the drop to 720p opened the door to 60fps gameplay – Dead Rising 3’s big issue is that despite the upgrades, the feeling in terms of refresh and response often feels very much like a poorly optimised current-gen title.

They say that it’s really just the zombie count and seamless area transitions that make Dead Rising 3 even feel and look like a “next gen” title, which is pretty disappointing. It started its life as an Xbox 360 game, and it shows.

I’m still keen for the game, and I’m sure it’ll be fun, but this certainly isn’t what I’d expect from the next generation of consoles. All I want is 1080p at 60fps…is that so hard to achieve? I really wonder what performance would be like on the PlayStation 4’s beefier hardware, or even better – PC.

It seems okay most of the time…but with the more Zombies on screen and more particles seems to suffer… All the dead rising games felt kinda slowish, well on console anyway. Just disappointing that they couldn’t get things more smoother. I will give them credit due, game does look great, but some points don’t make it feel so next gen yet. maybe I am expecting too much.

Actually, it doesn’t. Apart from the sheer number of the undead littering the screen, this could have been an xbox 360 title.

The only one who seems to got a hold on next gen at the moment is Sony. And the PC Master Race of course. I’m really getting the feeling that the Xbone and the games for it is being done as a rush job.

I don’t think “rush” is the correct word. I think whatever word would describe half next gen perhaps “Kinda Nextgen” or “Nearly Next gen” or my favourite “wish it was Next Gen”

        That is like trollception.

It’s 20fps because you’re playing it from the perspective of the zombie.

I got a question…Seriously, this is next gen…is it okay for us to keep saying oh well , it’s okay, it’s not that bad, a few frame drops ain’t all that bad….The hell!! this is NEXT GEN, why do we still have these issues??30fps lock??Are you kidding me….. Will wait for PC version then. I know I can play a smooth game, like with Dead Rising 2. This really pisses me off….DR is one game that really suffered from bad frame rate issues. I couldn’t play the Console version of DR 2…..

This is a 360 game that got rushed to Xbone mid development, what can you even expect? All these launch titles are crappy actually except Forza and Killzone maybe, they all suffer from low red or fps! Promise you in a year or two ALL games will look amazing on both consoles, running 1080p 60fps obviously!!

I’m not going to argue with that. The problem for me is. It’s hard convincing me (and a lot of other people as well) to part with $499 for a console that is not currently working as well as another one that is a 100 bucks cheaper.

I played DR2 for two weeks or so. Then it got boring. Sure there are different weapons you can create but how many times can you kill zombies? Even COD replaced zombies with aliens. Zombies are a fad. You see it with movies,TV series and games as well. I’m just tired of zombies. Bering back demons or Nazis for us to kill.

No, not really. For me it feels like one of those app games where you kill multiple zombies, get coins, upgrade weapons and cars. Repeat the same shit over and over until everything is maxed out. Or buy coins instead. Big “YAWN” from me. Prepare yourselves for a lot of DLC (weapons, costumes and cars) from this game. A whole lot.

Hmm.. I’m wondering why would it matter if this game was initially developed for 360, and whether this really holds up as an excuse. The system architecture of the Xbox One is much the same as the 360. It also has a proprietary kind of memory (eDRAM) which is there to help boost memory bandwidth, only major difference being that it only had 16MB vs the 32MB ESRAM of the XB1. Adapting from 360 to Xbox One should be quite straight forward in my opinion.
