Here’s some great news for those of you who’ve wanted to take a shot at the zombie apocalypse survival simulator that’s taken the gaming world by storm – but couldn’t be bothered to find and install ARMA II, its expansions and finally, the DayZ total conversion mod; it’s becoming a standalone title.

Bohemia Interactive, who developed the original ARMA 2 game will be is funding the full, standalone release of the mod, which is largely the reason for ARMA’s recent successes.  Day Z creator Dean Hall has been hired by bohemia as project lead, something he calls “a fairy-tale outcome”.

“Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so,” Hall Said. “The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price. I realise people will have many, many questions – but we wanted to let everyone know the announcement now.”

No words on platforms, but Pc is a pretty safe bet. It probably won’t be headed to consoles though.

DayZ has been incredibly successful, recently reaching an active userbase of a million players. It’ll now be released as a full game – reminiscent, I suppose, of Counter-Strike and its eventual release as a standalone title.
